In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce GTX 460 Gigabyte OC 1GB Edition are marginally better than the AMD Radeon HD 6850 GigaByte Edition.

The HD 6850 has a 105 MHz higher core clock speed than the GTX 460, but the GTX 460 has 8 more Texture Mapping Units than the HD 6850. As a result, the GTX 460 exhibits a 0.6 GTexel/s better Texture Fill Rate than the HD 6850. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The HD 6850 has a 105 MHz higher core clock speed than the GTX 460 and the same number of Render Output Units. This results in the HD 6850 providing 3.3 GPixel/s better pixeling performance. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The HD 6850 was released less than a year after the GTX 460, and so they are likely to have similar driver support for optimizing performance when running the latest games.

The GeForce GTX 460 Gigabyte OC 1GB Edition and the Radeon HD 6850 GigaByte Edition have the same amount of video memory, but are likely to provide slightly different experiences when displaying game textures at high resolutions.

The HD 6850 has 19.2 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the GTX 460, which means that the memory performance of the HD 6850 is slightly better than the GTX 460.

The GeForce GTX 460 Gigabyte OC 1GB Edition has 336 Shader Processing Units and the Radeon HD 6850 GigaByte Edition has 960. However, the actual shader performance of the GTX 460 is 480 and the actual shader performance of the HD 6850 is 394. The GTX 460 having 86 better shader performance is not particularly notable, as altogether the HD 6850 performs better when taking into account other relevant data.

The GeForce GTX 460 Gigabyte OC 1GB Edition requires 160 Watts to run but there is no entry for the Radeon HD 6850 GigaByte Edition. We would recommend a PSU with at least 500 Watts for the GTX 460 and a PSU with at least 500 Watts for the HD 6850. The two GPUs have been recommended a PSU with the same amount of wattage. As such, there is no need to worry about which will more significantly affect your yearly electricity bills.

Performance
Benchmarks Indicate a 5% Performance Boost over the Reference GeForce GTX 460.
Radeon HD 6850 GigaByte Edition is a special edition of the powerful Radeon HD 6850.
It appears the only differences are the extra 45 MHZ on the core clock and 200 MHZ on the memory clock.
The performance is therefore better than the standard Radeon HD 6850 but still far from the next class GPU - Radeon HD 6870.
Very demanding games should run on high settings while less demanding games should be maxed out easily.
