In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce GTX 965M 4GB SLI are significantly better than the AMD Radeon R9 M395X 4GB.
The GTX 965M has a 201 MHz higher core clock speed and the same number of Texture Mapping Units as the R9 M395X. This results in the GTX 965M providing 25.8 GTexel/s better texturing performance. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.
The GTX 965M has a 201 MHz higher core clock speed and 32 more Render Output Units than the R9 M395X. This results in the GTX 965M providing 36 GPixel/s better pixeling performance. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.
The R9 M395X was released less than a year after the GTX 965M, and so they are likely to have similar driver support for optimizing performance when running the latest games.
Both GPUs exhibit very powerful performance, so it probably isn't worth upgrading from one to the other, as both are capable of running even the most demanding games at the highest settings.
The GeForce GTX 965M 4GB SLI and the Radeon R9 M395X 4GB have the same amount of video memory, but are likely to provide slightly different experiences when displaying game textures at high resolutions.
The memory bandwidth of the GeForce GTX 965M 4GB SLI and the Radeon R9 M395X 4GB are the same, which means the GTX 965M and the R9 M395X have equal limitations when it comes to graphical data transfer.
Both the GeForce GTX 965M 4GB SLI and the Radeon R9 M395X 4GB have 2048 Shader Processing Units. While the two GPUs have the same number of SPUs, the actual performance delivered by the GTX 965M is 2627 and by the R9 M395X is 1259. Knowing that the shader performance of the GTX 965M is superior, it is not necessary to examine the GPUs' respective Texture and Pixel Fill Rates.
The GeForce GTX 965M 4GB SLI requires 100 Watts to run and the Radeon R9 M395X 4GB requires 125 Watts. The R9 M395X requires 25 Watts more than the GTX 965M to run. The difference is not significant enough for the R9 M395X to have a noticeably larger impact on your yearly electricity bills than the GTX 965M.

Mini Review | Overview GeForce GTX 965M 4GB SLI is a solution of two GeForce GTX 965M 4GB put together using NVIDIA's SLI technology. Architecture The Second variant of the Maxwell Architecture, despite being also manufactured with a 28nm technology, has an extremely large L2 Cache and features a Third Generation Delta Color Compression which allows NVIDIA to produce Graphics Cards with relatively small memory data transfer rates, without causing too much impact on the overall performance. Furthermore, the Shaders have been redesigned and are both more powerful and energy efficient. GPU It consists of 2 GPUs Codenamed GM204-N16E-GS which, together, offer 2048 Shader Processing Units, 128 TMUs and 64 ROPs. The central unit runs at 924MHz and goes up to 950MHz, in Turbo Mode. Memory Each GPU accesses a 2GB frame buffer of fast GDDR5, through a 128-bit memory interface. The size of the frame buffer is adequate. The Memory Clock Operates at 1253MHz. Power Consumption Power Consumption is around 100W. Performance Gaming benchmarks prove that at 2560x1440, the best suited resolution, GeForce GTX 965M 4GB SLI is around 10% faster than a Single GeForce GTX 980M. System Suggestions We recommend a High-End Processor and 8GB of RAM for Optimal Performance. | Overview Radeon R9 M395X 4GB is a High-End Mobile Graphics Card based on the second revision of the Graphics Core Next Architecture (CGN). Architecture Radeon R9 M395X 4GB Features a GPU Codenamed Amethyst XT which is a Third Gen GCN GPU and is identical to the Tonga XT GPU used on the Desktop Radeon R9 380X. Amethyst XT has 32 Compute Units Unlocked and thus offers 2048 Shader Processing Units, 128 TMUs and 32 ROPs. GPU The Central Unit is Clocked at 723MHz. Memory: Speed The GPU is equipped with fast GDDR5 and Accesses the Frame Buffer through a 256-bit Memory Interface. The Memory Clock Operates at 1250MHz. Memory: Frame Buffer The GPU can fill up a Memory Pool of up to 4GB. Under most circumstances, this only proves useful in certain 3D Games whose Settings Require Large Amounts of Memory. However, because the GPU itself is too weak to work under other circumstances in which 4GB of Memory are needed - such as 4K Gaming, a Large Frame Buffer is mostly a Gimmick. Power Consumption With a rated board TDP of 125W, it is suited for very large laptops. Performance Radeon R9 M395X 4GB is a Direct Rebrand of Radeon R9 M295X 4GB. Performance is Comparable to the desktop Radeon R9 280. Therefore, even GeForce GTX 970M is still faster. System Suggestions Radeon R9 M395X 4GB is best suited for resolutions up to and including 1920x1080. We recommend a Strong Processor and 8GB of RAM for Optimal Performance. |
