In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 Gainward Phantom Phoenix 4GB Edition are noticeably better than the Nvidia GeForce GTX 780.
The GTX 970 has a 289 MHz higher core clock speed than the GeForce GTX 780, but the GeForce GTX 780 has 88 more Texture Mapping Units than the GTX 970. As a result, the GeForce GTX 780 exhibits a 45.9 GTexel/s better Texture Fill Rate than the GTX 970. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.
The GTX 970 has a 289 MHz higher core clock speed and 8 more Render Output Units than the GeForce GTX 780. This results in the GTX 970 providing 23.1 GPixel/s better pixeling performance. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.
The GTX 970 was released over a year more recently than the GeForce GTX 780, and so the GTX 970 is likely to have better driver support, meaning it will be more optimized for running the latest games when compared to the GeForce GTX 780.
Both GPUs exhibit very powerful performance, so it probably isn't worth upgrading from one to the other, as both are capable of running even the most demanding games at the highest settings.
The GTX 970 has 1024 MB more video memory than the GeForce GTX 780, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. This is supported by the fact that the GTX 970 also has superior memory performance overall.
The GeForce GTX 780 has 64 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the GTX 970, which means that the memory performance of the GeForce GTX 780 is much better than the GTX 970.
The GeForce GTX 970 Gainward Phantom Phoenix 4GB Edition has 1664 Shader Processing Units and the GeForce GTX 780 has 2304. However, the actual shader performance of the GTX 970 is 2929 and the actual shader performance of the GeForce GTX 780 is 2078. The GTX 970 having 851 better shader performance is not particularly notable, as altogether the GeForce GTX 780 performs better when taking into account other relevant data.
The GeForce GTX 970 Gainward Phantom Phoenix 4GB Edition requires 150 Watts to run and the GeForce GTX 780 requires 250 Watts. We would recommend a PSU with at least 500 Watts for the GTX 970 and a PSU with at least 600 Watts for the GeForce GTX 780. The GeForce GTX 780 requires 100 Watts more than the GTX 970 to run. The difference is significant enough that the GeForce GTX 780 may have an adverse affect on your yearly electricity bills in comparison to the GTX 970.

Mini Review | Overview GeForce GTX 970 Gainward Phantom Phoenix 4GB Edition is a Special Edition of NVIDIA's High-End GeForce GTX 970, created by Gainward. Overclock: Central Unit The Central Unit now runs at 1152MHz, instead of 1051MHz while the Boost Clock now achieves 1304MHz, instead of 1178MHz. Overclock: Memory Clock None. Frame Buffer Untouched. Cooling Solution Dual 90mm fan: with the new cooler, the Graphics Card gets 9dB quieter lower than reference board (reference clock) under full load operation. Performance Benchmarks Indicate a 6% Performance Boost over the Reference GeForce GTX 970. | GeForce GTX 780 is a high-end graphics-card based on the 28nm, Kepler architecture. It's based on the Kepler GK110 Core (same used on Titan) but with 12 SMX activated and therefore offers 2304 Shader Processing Units, 192 TMUs and 48 ROPs on a 384-bit memory interface of fast GDDR5. While the central unit runs at 863MHz and goes up to 902MHz in Turbo, the memory clock operates at 1502MHz. It consumes up to 250W. Benchmarks indicate that its performance is up to 30% better than previous GeForce GTX 680 and thus allows even the most demanding games to be playable at the highest settings, at 1080p. With proper overclocking and cooling, it can surpass GeForce GTX Titan. |
