In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce GTX 880M 8GB are massively better than the Nvidia GeForce 940MX 2GB.
The GeForce 940MX 2GB has a 168 MHz higher core clock speed than the GTX 880M, but the GTX 880M has 104 more Texture Mapping Units than the GeForce 940MX 2GB. As a result, the GTX 880M exhibits a 95.2 GTexel/s better Texture Fill Rate than the GeForce 940MX 2GB. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.
The GeForce 940MX 2GB has a 168 MHz higher core clock speed than the GTX 880M, but the GTX 880M has 24 more Render Output Units than the GeForce 940MX 2GB. As a result, the GTX 880M exhibits a 21.5 GPixel/s better Pixel Fill Rate than the GeForce 940MX 2GB. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.
The GeForce 940MX 2GB was released over a year more recently than the GTX 880M, and so the GeForce 940MX 2GB is likely to have better driver support, meaning it will be more optimized for running the latest games when compared to the GTX 880M.
The GTX 880M has 6144 MB more video memory than the GeForce 940MX 2GB, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. This is supported by the fact that the GTX 880M also has superior memory performance overall.
The GTX 880M has 144 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the GeForce 940MX 2GB, which means that the memory performance of the GTX 880M is massively better than the GeForce 940MX 2GB.
The GeForce 940MX 2GB has 384 Shader Processing Units and the GeForce GTX 880M 8GB has 1536. However, the actual shader performance of the GeForce 940MX 2GB is 644 and the actual shader performance of the GTX 880M is 1525. The GTX 880M having 881 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the GTX 880M delivers a massively smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the GeForce 940MX 2GB.
The GeForce 940MX 2GB requires 25 Watts to run and the GeForce GTX 880M 8GB requires 122 Watts. The GTX 880M requires 97 Watts more than the GeForce 940MX 2GB to run. The difference is significant enough that the GTX 880M may have an adverse affect on your yearly electricity bills in comparison to the GeForce 940MX 2GB.

Mini Review | Overview GeForce 940MX 2GB is a Middle-Class Mobile Graphics Card based on the Maxwell Architecture. Architecture GeForce 940MX 2GB Features a GPU Codenamed GM108-N16S-GTR which is a First Gen Maxwell GPU and is identical to the GM108-N16S-GT-S used on GeForce 940M but with the addition of GDDR5 Support. GM108-N16S-GTR has 3 Compute Units Unlocked and thus offers 384 Shader Processing Units, 24 TMUs and 8 ROPs. GPU The Central Unit is Clocked at 1122Hz and goes up to 1242MHz, in Turbo Mode. Memory: Speed The GPU is equipped with DDR3 and Accesses the Frame Buffer through a 64-bit Memory Interface. The Memory Clock Operates at 1001MHz. Memory: Frame Buffer The GPU can fill up a Memory Pool of up to 2GB. Power Consumption With a rated board TDP of 25W, it is suited for small and medium sized laptops. Performance Equipped with DDR3, GeForce GT 940MX is only slightly faster than GeForce GT 940M. System Suggestions GeForce 940MX 2GB is best suited for resolutions up to and including 1366x768. We Recommend a Middle-Class Processor and 8GB of RAM for Optimal Performance. | GeForce GTX 880M 8GB is a high-end mobile graphics card and the fastest as of Spring 2014. It is based on a full variant of the GK104 Core of the 28nm Kepler architecture and thus offers 1536 Shader Processing Units, 128 TMUs and 32 ROPs, on a 256-bit memory interface of fast GDDR5. While the central unit runs at 954MHz and goes up to 993MHz, in Turbo Mode, the memory clock operates at 1250MHz. The rated TDP is clearly above 100W and 122W, on average. It is thus just a faster clocked GeForce GTX 780M. Theoretically, its performance might be up to 15% better than its predecessors, but since its memory bandwidth remains the same, expect at most a 10% performance boost, depending on the 3D Game. Therefore, GeForce GTX 880M will only be seen on very large note books and it needs to be paired with at least 8GB of RAM and a Strong Quad Core. The card is suited for 1080p and even the most demanding games should run fluently at high settings. |
