In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce FX 5500 are massively better than the AMD Radeon RX 490 8GB.

The RX 490 was released over three years more recently than the GeForce FX 5500, and so the RX 490 is likely to have far better driver support, meaning it will be much more optimized and ultimately superior to the GeForce FX 5500 when running the latest games.

Both GPUs exhibit very poor performance, so rather than upgrading from one to the other you should consider looking at more powerful GPUs. Neither of these will be able to run the latest games in any playable way.

The RX 490 has 7936 MB more video memory than the GeForce FX 5500, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. This is supported by the fact that the RX 490 also has superior memory performance overall.

The RX 490 has 1020.8 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the GeForce FX 5500, which means that the memory performance of the RX 490 is massively better than the GeForce FX 5500.

The Radeon RX 490 8GB has 4096 Shader Processing Units and the GeForce FX 5500 has 4. However, the actual shader performance of the RX 490 is 4301 and the actual shader performance of the GeForce FX 5500 is 1. The RX 490 having 4300 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the RX 490 delivers a massively smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the GeForce FX 5500.

The Radeon RX 490 8GB requires 225 Watts to run but there is no entry for the GeForce FX 5500. We would recommend a PSU with at least 550 Watts for the RX 490.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewOverview
Radeon RX 490 8GB is an upcoming high-end performance Graphics Card based on the Third Revision of the Graphics Core Next (GCN) Architecture.

The GPU accesses a 8GB frame buffer of Second Generation HBM, through a 8192-bit memory interface. The size of the frame buffer is adequate. The Memory Clock Operates at 500MHz.

Power Consumption
As a dual slot graphics card this should be in the region of 225W

The RX 490 will be capable of running 2016 released AAA games on High-Ultra graphics settings using a 1440p resolution. In some cases it will also be capable of running a number of modern games at 4K resolution with a reliable frame rate at High graphics settings

System Suggestions
Radeon RX 490 8GB is best suited for resolutions up to and including 2560x1440. We recommend a High-End Processor and 16GB of RAM for Optimal Performance.
