In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 MSI Founders 8GB Edition are significantly better than the Nvidia GeForce GTX 780.
The GTX 1070 has a 643 MHz higher core clock speed but 72 fewer Texture Mapping Units than the GeForce GTX 780. The lower TMU count doesn't matter, though, as altogether the GTX 1070 manages to provide 15 GTexel/s better texturing performance. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.
The GTX 1070 has a 643 MHz higher core clock speed and 16 more Render Output Units than the GeForce GTX 780. This results in the GTX 1070 providing 55 GPixel/s better pixeling performance. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.
The GTX 1070 was released over three years more recently than the GeForce GTX 780, and so the GTX 1070 is likely to have far better driver support, meaning it will be much more optimized and ultimately superior to the GeForce GTX 780 when running the latest games.
Both GPUs exhibit very powerful performance, so it probably isn't worth upgrading from one to the other, as both are capable of running even the most demanding games at the highest settings.
The GTX 1070 has 5120 MB more video memory than the GeForce GTX 780, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. This is supported by the fact that the GTX 1070 also has superior memory performance overall.
The GeForce GTX 780 has 32.1 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the GTX 1070, which means that the memory performance of the GeForce GTX 780 is noticeably better than the GTX 1070.
The GeForce GTX 1070 MSI Founders 8GB Edition has 1920 Shader Processing Units and the GeForce GTX 780 has 2304. However, the actual shader performance of the GTX 1070 is 4362 and the actual shader performance of the GeForce GTX 780 is 2078. The GTX 1070 having 2284 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the GTX 1070 delivers a massively smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the GeForce GTX 780.
The GTX 1070 transistor size technology is 12 nm (nanometers) smaller than the GeForce GTX 780. This means that the GTX 1070 is expected to run slightly cooler and achieve higher clock frequencies than the GeForce GTX 780.
The GeForce GTX 1070 MSI Founders 8GB Edition requires 150 Watts to run and the GeForce GTX 780 requires 250 Watts. We would recommend a PSU with at least 500 Watts for the GTX 1070 and a PSU with at least 600 Watts for the GeForce GTX 780. The GeForce GTX 780 requires 100 Watts more than the GTX 1070 to run. The difference is significant enough that the GeForce GTX 780 may have an adverse affect on your yearly electricity bills in comparison to the GTX 1070.

Mini Review | Overview GeForce GTX 1070 MSI Founders 8GB Edition is a Special Edition of NVIDIA's High-End GeForce GTX 1070, created by MSI. Overclock: Central Unit None. Overclock: Memory Clock None. Frame Buffer Untouched. Cooling Solution The Founders Edition offers Superior Cooling than the reference GeForce GTX 1070. Performance Benchmarks Indicate no Performance Boost over the Reference GeForce GTX 1070. | GeForce GTX 780 is a high-end graphics-card based on the 28nm, Kepler architecture. It's based on the Kepler GK110 Core (same used on Titan) but with 12 SMX activated and therefore offers 2304 Shader Processing Units, 192 TMUs and 48 ROPs on a 384-bit memory interface of fast GDDR5. While the central unit runs at 863MHz and goes up to 902MHz in Turbo, the memory clock operates at 1502MHz. It consumes up to 250W. Benchmarks indicate that its performance is up to 30% better than previous GeForce GTX 680 and thus allows even the most demanding games to be playable at the highest settings, at 1080p. With proper overclocking and cooling, it can surpass GeForce GTX Titan. |
