In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 4GB SLI are significantly better than the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 Inno3D Compact 3GB.

The GTX 1060 has a 380 MHz higher core clock speed than the GTX 980, but the GTX 980 has 184 more Texture Mapping Units than the GTX 1060. As a result, the GTX 980 exhibits a 179.9 GTexel/s better Texture Fill Rate than the GTX 1060. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The GTX 1060 has a 380 MHz higher core clock speed than the GTX 980, but the GTX 980 has 80 more Render Output Units than the GTX 1060. As a result, the GTX 980 exhibits a 71.8 GPixel/s better Pixel Fill Rate than the GTX 1060. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The GTX 1060 was released over a year more recently than the GTX 980, and so the GTX 1060 is likely to have better driver support, meaning it will be more optimized for running the latest games when compared to the GTX 980.

Both GPUs exhibit very powerful performance, so it probably isn't worth upgrading from one to the other, as both are capable of running even the most demanding games at the highest settings.

The GTX 980 has 5120 MB more video memory than the GTX 1060, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. This is supported by the fact that the GTX 980 also has superior memory performance overall.

The GTX 980 has 256.6 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the GTX 1060, which means that the memory performance of the GTX 980 is massively better than the GTX 1060.

The GeForce GTX 1060 Inno3D Compact 3GB has 1152 Shader Processing Units and the GeForce GTX 980 4GB SLI has 4096. However, the actual shader performance of the GTX 1060 is 1969 and the actual shader performance of the GTX 980 is 6724. The GTX 980 having 4755 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the GTX 980 delivers a massively smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the GTX 1060.

The GTX 1060 transistor size technology is 12 nm (nanometers) smaller than the GTX 980. This means that the GTX 1060 is expected to run slightly cooler and achieve higher clock frequencies than the GTX 980.

The GeForce GTX 1060 Inno3D Compact 3GB requires 120 Watts to run and the GeForce GTX 980 4GB SLI requires 350 Watts. We would recommend a PSU with at least 400 Watts for the GTX 1060 and a PSU with at least 750 Watts for the GTX 980. The GTX 980 requires 230 Watts more than the GTX 1060 to run. The difference is significant enough that the GTX 980 may have an adverse affect on your yearly electricity bills in comparison to the GTX 1060.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewOverview
The GeForce GTX 1060 Inno3D Compact 3GB a compact variant of the GeForce GTX 1060 3GB which is currently the entry level Nvidia GTX 1000 performance graphics card, based on the Pascal Architecture. It comes with locked memory of 3GB instead of the full 6GB.

Architecture
It equips a GPU Codenamed P106-300-A1 which is a first gen Pascal GPU and has 9 SM activated, offering 1152 Shader Processing Units (the GTX 1060 6GB version offers 1280 SPU), 72 TMUs and 48 ROPs.

GPU
The central unit runs at 1506MHz and goes up to 1709MHz, when Boost mode is activated.

Memory
The GPU accesses a 3GB frame buffer of GDDR5, through a 192-bit memory interface, while the Memory Clock Operates at 2002MHz.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 120W, it requires at least a 400W PSU with one available 6-pin connector.

Performance
The GeForce GTX 1060 Inno3D Compact 3GB is capable of running most 2016 AAA games on 1080p screen resolution at very high graphics producing 60+ frames per second. At 1440p this card will produce 60+ fps on the same games with the graphic settings adjusted down to high/medium. The 3GB memory reduction that will hamper the high quality game textures that this card can deliver, making it less future proof as more GPU memory hungry games are released.
Overview
GeForce GTX 980 4GB SLI is a solution of two GeForce GTX 980 4GB put together using NVIDIA's SLI technology.

Architecture
The Second variant of the Maxwell Architecture, despite being also manufactured with a 28nm technology, has an extremely large L2 Cache and features a Third Generation Delta Color Compression which allows NVIDIA to produce Graphics Cards with relatively small memory data transfer rates, without causing too much impact on the overall performance. Furthermore, the Shaders have been redesigned and are both more powerful and energy efficient.

GPU
It consists of 2 GPUs codenamed GM204-400-A1 which, together, offer 4096 Shader Processing Units, 256 TMUs and 128 ROPs, on a 512-bit memory interface of fast GDDR5. The central unit runs at 1126MHz and goes up to 1216MHz, in Turbo Mode, while the memory clock operates at 1753MHz.

Power Consumption
Power Consumption lies between 300W and 400W.

Performance
Gaming benchmarks prove that at 4K (3840x2160) GeForce GTX 980 4GB SLI is over 7% faster than AMD's Radeon R9 295X2.

System Suggestions
We recommend a very strong processor (Intel Core i7 Six Core/AMD FX Eight Core) and 16GB of RAM for a system with GeForce GTX 980 4GB SLI.
