In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 Ti are significantly better than the Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 MSI Armor 2X OC 4GB Edition.

The GTX 1070 Ti has a 505 MHz higher core clock speed and 48 more Texture Mapping Units than the GTX 970. This results in the GTX 1070 Ti providing 129.7 GTexel/s better texturing performance. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The GTX 1070 Ti has a 505 MHz higher core clock speed and 8 more Render Output Units than the GTX 970. This results in the GTX 1070 Ti providing 41.1 GPixel/s better pixeling performance. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The GTX 1070 Ti was released over three years more recently than the GTX 970, and so the GTX 1070 Ti is likely to have far better driver support, meaning it will be much more optimized and ultimately superior to the GTX 970 when running the latest games.

Both GPUs exhibit very powerful performance, so it probably isn't worth upgrading from one to the other, as both are capable of running even the most demanding games at the highest settings.

The GTX 1070 Ti has 4096 MB more video memory than the GTX 970, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. This is supported by the fact that the GTX 1070 Ti also has superior memory performance overall.

The GTX 1070 Ti has 31.9 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the GTX 970, which means that the memory performance of the GTX 1070 Ti is noticeably better than the GTX 970.

The GeForce GTX 1070 Ti has 2304 Shader Processing Units and the GeForce GTX 970 MSI Armor 2X OC 4GB Edition has 1664. However, the actual shader performance of the GTX 1070 Ti is 5235 and the actual shader performance of the GTX 970 is 2788. The GTX 1070 Ti having 2447 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the GTX 1070 Ti delivers a massively smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the GTX 970.

The GTX 1070 Ti transistor size technology is 12 nm (nanometers) smaller than the GTX 970. This means that the GTX 1070 Ti is expected to run slightly cooler and achieve higher clock frequencies than the GTX 970.

The GeForce GTX 1070 Ti requires 180 Watts to run and the GeForce GTX 970 MSI Armor 2X OC 4GB Edition requires 148 Watts. We would recommend a PSU with at least 500 Watts for the GTX 1070 Ti and a PSU with at least 500 Watts for the GTX 970. The GTX 1070 Ti requires 32 Watts more than the GTX 970 to run. The difference is significant enough that the GTX 1070 Ti may have a slight adverse affect on your yearly electricity bills in comparison to the GTX 970.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewOverview
The GeForce GTX 1070 Ti is a High-End Graphics Card based on the Pascal Architecture.

Architecture
It equips a GPU Codenamed GP104-300-A1 which is a cut-down GTX 1080 Pascal GPU and has 19 SM activated, offering 2432 Shader Processing Units, 152 TMUs and 64 ROPs.

GPU
The central unit runs at 1607MHz and goes up to 1683MHz in Turbo Mode.

Memory
The GPU accesses a 8GB frame buffer of Fast GDDR5 through a 256-bit memory interface, while the Memory Clock Operates at 2002MHz, 8GHz effective.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 180W, it requires at least a 500W PSU with one available 8-pin connector.

Performance
The GTX 1070 Ti is a high end performance GPU, capable of gaming at 1440p across all modern 2018 AAA games at high graphics settings and delivering 60+FPS.

System Suggestions
GeForce GTX 1070 Ti is best suited for resolutions up to and including 2560x1600. We recommend a High-End Processor and 16GB of RAM for Optimal Performance.
Overview
GeForce GTX 970 MSI Armor 2X OC 4GB Edition is a special edition of NVIDIA's high-end GeForce GTX 970 4GB created by MSI. It features a new Cooling Solution and overclocking out of the box. Read below to know more.

Overclock: Central Unit
The Central Unit now runs at 1102MHz, instead of 1051MHz. The Boost Clock is now of 1241MHz, instead of 1178MHz.

Overclock: Memory Clock
The Operating Memory Clock still runs at 1753MHz and the Frame Buffer is still 4GB. This is adequate for the GPU.

Cooling Solution
The reference NVIDIA Single-Fan Cooling System has been replaced by MSI's Armor 2X Cooling Solution. This means the card runs cooler under load.

Performance
Benchmarks indicate a 5% performance over the reference GeForce GTX 970 4GB.
