In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 SLI are significantly better than the Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 4GB SLI.

The RTX 2080 has a 481 MHz higher core clock speed and 192 more Texture Mapping Units than the GTX 980. This results in the RTX 2080 providing 431.6 GTexel/s better texturing performance. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The RTX 2080 has a 481 MHz higher core clock speed than the GTX 980 and the same number of Render Output Units. This results in the RTX 2080 providing 61.6 GPixel/s better pixeling performance. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The RTX 2080 was released over three years more recently than the GTX 980, and so the RTX 2080 is likely to have far better driver support, meaning it will be much more optimized and ultimately superior to the GTX 980 when running the latest games.

The GTX 980 having 2288 better shader performance is not particularly notable, as altogether the RTX 2080 performs better when taking into account other relevant data.

The RTX 2080 transistor size technology is 18 nm (nanometers) smaller than the GTX 980. This means that the RTX 2080 is expected to run slightly cooler and achieve higher clock frequencies than the GTX 980.

The GeForce GTX 980 4GB SLI requires 350 Watts to run but there is no entry for the RTX 2080. We would recommend a PSU with at least 750 Watts for the GTX 980, but we do not have a recommended PSU wattage for the RTX 2080.

This card has also been rumoured to be called the GeForce GTX 2080 SLI or the GeForce GTX 1180 SLI. Architecture It equips two GPUs Codenamed GT104 which are First Gen Turing GPUs and have 20 SM activated, offering 3584 Shader Processing Units, 224 TMUs and 64 ROPs each. GPU The central unit runs at 1607MHz and goes up to 1800MHz, in Turbo Mode. Memory Each GPU accesses an 8GB frame buffer of Second Gen GDDR6, through a 256-bit memory interface, while the Memory Clock Operates at 1251MHz. Total memory bandwith is 512Gb/s. GeForce GTX 980 4GB SLI is a solution of two GeForce GTX 980 4GB put together using NVIDIA's SLI technology.

Architecture
The Second variant of the Maxwell Architecture, despite being also manufactured with a 28nm technology, has an extremely large L2 Cache and features a Third Generation Delta Color Compression which allows NVIDIA to produce Graphics Cards with relatively small memory data transfer rates, without causing too much impact on the overall performance. Furthermore, the Shaders have been redesigned and are both more powerful and energy efficient.

It consists of 2 GPUs codenamed GM204-400-A1 which, together, offer 4096 Shader Processing Units, 256 TMUs and 128 ROPs, on a 512-bit memory interface of fast GDDR5. The central unit runs at 1126MHz and goes up to 1216MHz, in Turbo Mode, while the memory clock operates at 1753MHz.
