In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 MSI Gaming X 8GB Edition are very slightly better than the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 3GB GDDR5.

The GTX 1070 has a 242 MHz higher core clock speed and the same number of Texture Mapping Units as the RTX 2060. This results in the GTX 1070 providing 29 GTexel/s better texturing performance. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The GTX 1070 has a 242 MHz higher core clock speed and 17 more Render Output Units than the RTX 2060. This results in the GTX 1070 providing 38.6 GPixel/s better pixeling performance. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The RTX 2060 was released over a year more recently than the GTX 1070, and so the RTX 2060 is likely to have better driver support, meaning it will be more optimized for running the latest games when compared to the GTX 1070.

Both GPUs exhibit very powerful performance, so it probably isn't worth upgrading from one to the other, as both are capable of running even the most demanding games at the highest settings.

The GTX 1070 has 5120 MB more video memory than the RTX 2060, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. This is supported by the fact that the GTX 1070 also has superior memory performance overall.

The RTX 2060 transistor size technology is 4 nm (nanometers) smaller than the GTX 1070. This means that the RTX 2060 is expected to run very slightly cooler and achieve higher clock frequencies than the GTX 1070.

The GeForce RTX 2060 3GB GDDR5 requires 150 Watts to run and the GeForce GTX 1070 MSI Gaming X 8GB Edition requires 150 Watts. We would recommend a PSU with at least 450 Watts for the RTX 2060 and a PSU with at least 500 Watts for the GTX 1070. The two GPUs require the same amount of wattage to run. As such, there is no need to worry about which will more significantly affect your yearly electricity bills.

Architecture The Turing architecture represents a process shrink down to 12nm compared to 14nm Pascal. The Turing architecture provides the world's first consumer support for real-time ray-tracing technology, or RTX. The GeForce RTX 2060 does support real-time ray-tracing and excels at 1080p screen resolution. GPU It equips a Turing GPU codenamed TU106 which has 1920 Shader Processing Units, 120 TMUs and 47 ROPs. The central unit runs at 1365 MHz and goes up to 1680 MHz, in Boost mode. Memory The GPU accesses a 3GB frame buffer of slower GDDR5 memory compared to the GDDR6 model, running through a 192-bit memory interface, while the Memory clock operates at 1500MHz, or 14GHz effective. The limited video memory available means the RTX 2060 3GB will struggle at 1440p resolution.
