In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 MSI Gaming X 8GB Edition are very slightly better than the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q 90W.

The GTX 1080 has a 718 MHz higher core clock speed but 24 fewer Texture Mapping Units than the RTX 2080. The lower TMU count doesn't matter, though, as altogether the GTX 1080 manages to provide 91.1 GTexel/s better texturing performance. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The GTX 1080 has a 718 MHz higher core clock speed than the RTX 2080 and the same number of Render Output Units. This results in the GTX 1080 providing 45.9 GPixel/s better pixeling performance. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The RTX 2080 was released over a year more recently than the GTX 1080, and so the RTX 2080 is likely to have better driver support, meaning it will be more optimized for running the latest games when compared to the GTX 1080.

Both GPUs exhibit very powerful performance, so it probably isn't worth upgrading from one to the other, as both are capable of running even the most demanding games at the highest settings.

The GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q 90W and the GeForce GTX 1080 MSI Gaming X 8GB Edition have the same amount of video memory, but are likely to provide slightly different experiences when displaying game textures at high resolutions.

The RTX 2080 has 60.7 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the GTX 1080, which means that the memory performance of the RTX 2080 is much better than the GTX 1080.

The GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q 90W has 2944 Shader Processing Units and the GeForce GTX 1080 MSI Gaming X 8GB Edition has 2560. However, the actual shader performance of the RTX 2080 is 3621 and the actual shader performance of the GTX 1080 is 6383. The GTX 1080 having 2762 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the GTX 1080 delivers a noticeably smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the RTX 2080.

The RTX 2080 transistor size technology is 4 nm (nanometers) smaller than the GTX 1080. This means that the RTX 2080 is expected to run very slightly cooler and achieve higher clock frequencies than the GTX 1080.

The GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q 90W requires 90 Watts to run and the GeForce GTX 1080 MSI Gaming X 8GB Edition requires 180 Watts. We would recommend a PSU with at least 500 Watts for the GTX 1080, but we do not have a recommended PSU wattage for the RTX 2080. The GTX 1080 requires 90 Watts more than the RTX 2080 to run. The difference is significant enough that the GTX 1080 may have an adverse affect on your yearly electricity bills in comparison to the RTX 2080.

Mini ReviewOverview The GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q 90W is a High-End laptop Graphics Card based on the Turing Architecture. As a Max-Q graphics card it is ideally suited for thin gaming laptops. However, this does impact performance. Architecture It equips a Turing GPU Codenamed TU104 N18E-G3-A1 which is a First Gen Turing GPU and has 20 SM activated, offering 2944 Shader Processing Units, 184 TMUs and 64 ROPs. The Turing architecture provides the world's first consumer support for real-time ray-tracing technology, or RTX. It also has 368 Tensor Cores for AI purposes. GPU Name: TU104-400A-A1 GPU The central unit runs at 990MHz and goes up to 1230MHz in Turbo Mode. Memory The GPU accesses an 8GB frame buffer of Second Gen GDDR6 through a 256-bit memory interface, while the Memory Clock Operates at 1500MHz, or 12GHz effective. Total memory bandwidth is 384 Gb/s. Power Consumption With a rated board TDP of 90W, the GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q 90W is fairly power hungry for a laptop graphics processor. It runs around 15% faster than the 80W model.
