In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 4GB SLI are marginally better than the AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT MSI Gaming 6GB.

The RX 5600 XT has a 59 MHz higher core clock speed than the GTX 980, but the GTX 980 has 112 more Texture Mapping Units than the RX 5600 XT. As a result, the GTX 980 exhibits a 117.7 GTexel/s better Texture Fill Rate than the RX 5600 XT. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The RX 5600 XT has a 59 MHz higher core clock speed than the GTX 980, but the GTX 980 has 64 more Render Output Units than the RX 5600 XT. As a result, the GTX 980 exhibits a 68.3 GPixel/s better Pixel Fill Rate than the RX 5600 XT. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The RX 5600 XT was released over three years more recently than the GTX 980, and so the RX 5600 XT is likely to have far better driver support, meaning it will be much more optimized and ultimately superior to the GTX 980 when running the latest games.

Both GPUs exhibit very powerful performance, so it probably isn't worth upgrading from one to the other, as both are capable of running even the most demanding games at the highest settings.

The GTX 980 has 2048 MB more video memory than the RX 5600 XT, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. This is supported by the fact that the GTX 980 also has superior memory performance overall.

The GTX 980 has 160.8 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the RX 5600 XT, which means that the memory performance of the GTX 980 is massively better than the RX 5600 XT.

The Radeon RX 5600 XT MSI Gaming 6GB has 2304 Shader Processing Units and the GeForce GTX 980 4GB SLI has 4096. However, the actual shader performance of the RX 5600 XT is 2396 and the actual shader performance of the GTX 980 is 6724. The GTX 980 having 4328 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the GTX 980 delivers a massively smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the RX 5600 XT.

The RX 5600 XT transistor size technology is 21 nm (nanometers) smaller than the GTX 980. This means that the RX 5600 XT is expected to run slightly cooler and achieve higher clock frequencies than the GTX 980.

The Radeon RX 5600 XT MSI Gaming 6GB requires 150 Watts to run and the GeForce GTX 980 4GB SLI requires 350 Watts. We would recommend a PSU with at least 550 Watts for the RX 5600 XT and a PSU with at least 750 Watts for the GTX 980. The GTX 980 requires 200 Watts more than the RX 5600 XT to run. The difference is significant enough that the GTX 980 may have an adverse affect on your yearly electricity bills in comparison to the RX 5600 XT.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewOverview
The AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT MSI Gaming 6GB is an mid-tier gaming Graphics Card based on the first (1.0) Revision of the RDNA Architecture.

Architecture
The Navi 10 XL GPU offers support for GDDR6 Memory, DirectX 12.0, Vulkan 1.0, and OpenGL 4.5.

GPU
This variant of the Navi 10 XL GPU features 36 Compute Units activated, offering 2304 Shader Processing Units, 144 TMUs and 64 ROPs. The GPU features a 1375 MHz base clock speed and up to 1560 MHz with boost clock, making it an estimated 20% slower than a Radeon RX 5700 8GB. This puts its predicted performance at roughly 20% faster than a GeForce GTX 1660 Ti.

Memory: Speed
The GPU is equipped with 6GB high-speed GDDR6 and accesses the Frame Buffer through a 192-bit memory interface, providing total memory bandwidth of 288 GB/s.

Memory: Frame Buffer
The GPU can fill up a Memory Pool of up to 6GB. Under most circumstances, this only proves useful in certain 3D Games whose Settings Require Large Amounts of Memory.
However, the GPU itself is aimed for 1080p Gaming. In some limited scenarios at 1440p resolution, 6GB video memory might be a bottleneck and Performance could be better were the Frame Buffer larger, however this would only be an issue in the most demanding games.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 150W, it requires at least a 550W PSU with available 8+8-pin connector.

Performance
AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT 6GB competes with GeForce GTX 1660 Ti which is available for $329.
System Suggestions
The Radeon RX 5600 XT MSI Gaming 6GB is best suited for resolutions up to and including 2650 x 1480 but is ideally suited for 1920 x 1080. For the most demanding AAA games it should be ideally suited to 1080p. We recommend a mid-tier CPU and at least 16GB of RAM for Optimal Performance.
Overview
GeForce GTX 980 4GB SLI is a solution of two GeForce GTX 980 4GB put together using NVIDIA's SLI technology.

Architecture
The Second variant of the Maxwell Architecture, despite being also manufactured with a 28nm technology, has an extremely large L2 Cache and features a Third Generation Delta Color Compression which allows NVIDIA to produce Graphics Cards with relatively small memory data transfer rates, without causing too much impact on the overall performance. Furthermore, the Shaders have been redesigned and are both more powerful and energy efficient.

GPU
It consists of 2 GPUs codenamed GM204-400-A1 which, together, offer 4096 Shader Processing Units, 256 TMUs and 128 ROPs, on a 512-bit memory interface of fast GDDR5. The central unit runs at 1126MHz and goes up to 1216MHz, in Turbo Mode, while the memory clock operates at 1753MHz.

Power Consumption
Power Consumption lies between 300W and 400W.

Performance
Gaming benchmarks prove that at 4K (3840x2160) GeForce GTX 980 4GB SLI is over 7% faster than AMD's Radeon R9 295X2.

System Suggestions
We recommend a very strong processor (Intel Core i7 Six Core/AMD FX Eight Core) and 16GB of RAM for a system with GeForce GTX 980 4GB SLI.
