In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the AMD Radeon Pro VII 16GB are significantly better than the Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 4GB SLI.

The Pro VII has a 274 MHz higher core clock speed but 16 fewer Texture Mapping Units than the GTX 980. The lower TMU count doesn't matter, though, as altogether the Pro VII manages to provide 47.7 GTexel/s better texturing performance. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The Pro VII has a 274 MHz higher core clock speed than the GTX 980, but the GTX 980 has 64 more Render Output Units than the Pro VII. As a result, the GTX 980 exhibits a 54.5 GPixel/s better Pixel Fill Rate than the Pro VII. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The Pro VII was released over three years more recently than the GTX 980, and so the Pro VII is likely to have far better driver support, meaning it will be much more optimized and ultimately superior to the GTX 980 when running the latest games.

Both GPUs exhibit very powerful performance, so it probably isn't worth upgrading from one to the other, as both are capable of running even the most demanding games at the highest settings.

The Pro VII has 8192 MB more video memory than the GTX 980, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. This is supported by the fact that the Pro VII also has superior memory performance overall.

The Pro VII has 575.2 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the GTX 980, which means that the memory performance of the Pro VII is massively better than the GTX 980.

The Radeon Pro VII 16GB has 3840 Shader Processing Units and the GeForce GTX 980 4GB SLI has 4096. However, the actual shader performance of the Pro VII is 4243 and the actual shader performance of the GTX 980 is 6724. The GTX 980 having 2481 better shader performance is not particularly notable, as altogether the Pro VII performs better when taking into account other relevant data.

The Pro VII transistor size technology is 21 nm (nanometers) smaller than the GTX 980. This means that the Pro VII is expected to run slightly cooler and achieve higher clock frequencies than the GTX 980.

The Radeon Pro VII 16GB requires 250 Watts to run and the GeForce GTX 980 4GB SLI requires 350 Watts. We would recommend a PSU with at least 750 Watts for the GTX 980, but we do not have a recommended PSU wattage for the Pro VII. The GTX 980 requires 100 Watts more than the Pro VII to run. The difference is significant enough that the GTX 980 may have an adverse affect on your yearly electricity bills in comparison to the Pro VII.

Mini ReviewOverview The AMD Radeon Pro VII 16GB HBM2 is an Enthusiast Graphics Card based on the fifth (5.1) Revision of the Graphics Core Next (GCN) Architecture.
Architecture Vega 20 XT GPU offers support for second-gen HBM2 Memory, DirectX 12.0 and Open GL 4.5. The Vega 20 XT is the first ever 7nm gaming GPU and is the Full Variant of the GPU with 60 Compute Units activated, offering 3840 Shader Processing Units, 240 TMUs and 64 ROPs.
GPU The Central Unit is clocked at 1400MHz with a boost clock speed of 1700MHz.
Memory: Speed The GPU is equipped with 16GB of stacked HBM2 Memory and accesses the Frame Buffer through a 4096-bit memory interface, offering total memory bandwidth of 1TB/s. HBM2 memory is clocked at 1000MHz base clock, or 2000 MHz effective speed.
Memory: Frame Buffer The GPU can fill up a Memory Pool of up to 16GB. Under most circumstances, this only proves useful in certain 3D Games whose Settings Require Large Amounts of Memory but it makes the Radeon Pro VII a great GPU for memory-intensive programs. The GPU itself is aimed for 8K video processing.
Power Consumption With a rated board TDP of 250W, it requires at least a 600W PSU with one available 8-pin connector and one available 6-pin connector. Performance The Radeon Pro VII 16GB is in in the same region of performance as the GeForce RTX 2080, although it does lack ray-tracing support. However, the ultra-wide HBM2 memory may offer the Radeon RX Vega an advantage at higher resolutions. System Suggestions AMD Radeon VII 16GB HBM2 is best suited for resolutions up to and including 3840 x2160 (4K). We recommend a Very Strong Processor and at least 16GB of RAM for Optimal Performance.
Overview
GeForce GTX 980 4GB SLI is a solution of two GeForce GTX 980 4GB put together using NVIDIA's SLI technology.

Architecture
The Second variant of the Maxwell Architecture, despite being also manufactured with a 28nm technology, has an extremely large L2 Cache and features a Third Generation Delta Color Compression which allows NVIDIA to produce Graphics Cards with relatively small memory data transfer rates, without causing too much impact on the overall performance. Furthermore, the Shaders have been redesigned and are both more powerful and energy efficient.

GPU
It consists of 2 GPUs codenamed GM204-400-A1 which, together, offer 4096 Shader Processing Units, 256 TMUs and 128 ROPs, on a 512-bit memory interface of fast GDDR5. The central unit runs at 1126MHz and goes up to 1216MHz, in Turbo Mode, while the memory clock operates at 1753MHz.

Power Consumption
Power Consumption lies between 300W and 400W.

Performance
Gaming benchmarks prove that at 4K (3840x2160) GeForce GTX 980 4GB SLI is over 7% faster than AMD's Radeon R9 295X2.

System Suggestions
We recommend a very strong processor (Intel Core i7 Six Core/AMD FX Eight Core) and 16GB of RAM for a system with GeForce GTX 980 4GB SLI.
