In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the AMD Radeon HD 2900 GT are very slightly better than the Nvidia GeForce 8600 GT 512MB GDDR3.

Mini ReviewGeForce 8600 GT 512MB GDDR3 is one of the many variants of the fast-middle-class GeForce 8600 GT.
On this version, the GPU is equipped with 512MB of standard GDDR3. The architecture allows the use of 512MB, since the GPU's processing power is strong enough and the memory controller is up for the task of processing 512MB. Therefore, the performance is superior to the 256MB version and any other version of DDR2, including 1GB.
However, and due to its architecture limitations, modern demanding games will require reduced settings, even if they don't require more than 512MB of video ram. Very Demanding games like Metro 2033 are only playable at the lowest settings.
Radeon HD 2900 GT is a high-end GPU based on the 80nm variant of the second unified shader architecture, R600.
It's based on the R600 GT Core and offers 240 Shader Processing Units, 12 TMUs and 12 ROPs a 256-bit memory interface of standard GDDR3. The central unit runs at 600MHz and the memory clock runs at up to 800MHz.
Its performance is not comparable to neither Radeon HD 2900 Pro nor Radeon HD 2900 XT due to featuring only 240 Shader Processing Units. Still, it's clearly above Radeon HD 2600 GPUs.
Due to the limited memory size, most of today's games will require unattractive resolutions but should run fluently from medium to high settings at anything below 1024x768.
