How well can the GeForce GTX 1080 run games
13 Dec 2019 - Graphics card reviewed

A true powerhouse, the GeForce GTX 1080 will run even the most demanding game system requirements released today. DirectX 12 gaming system requirements will be met by this gpu.

What FPS performance can the GeForce GTX 1080 get on latest AAA 2019 games? In particular our game review looks at the FPS achieved running on Ultra graphics settings on the 1080p screen resolution as well as 1440p and 4K. This graphics hardware can run 970 of the 1000 most demanding PC games played today.

Looking at some of the modern popular games people are playing today the GeForce GTX 1080 is running Star Wars: Jedi - Fallen Order and delivering reasonable performances on 1080p Ultra, getting 55 frames per second. Comparing this to FIFA 20 which is getting strong results, where it averages 199 FPS. Another popular game we looked at is Resident Evil 3 Remake, which is predicted to run at 78 frames per second.

One of the growing popular screen resolutions for PC gaming is the wider 1440p. So we wanted to see how well the GeForce GTX 1080 performed at 1440p by taking a look at some of the current popular games. First we looked at Star Wars: Jedi - Fallen Order and saw it deliver playable frames per second across the following graphics settings - Low: 111 FPS, Medium: 87 FPS, High: 59 FPS and Ultra: 42 FPS. We then checked the performance on FIFA 20 to see if that runs well. It was strong with a 152 FPS at Ultra 1440p. In summary we feel the GeForce GTX 1080 running at 1440p is a very good hardware option at these screen sizes. Ultra is easily achieved across almost all games at 1440p and we would suggest an increase of screen size up to 4K for this graphics card.

How many years will the GeForce GTX 1080 graphics card play newly released games and how long until you should consider upgrading the GeForce GTX 1080 in your PC? 2-3 years of top end gaming before an upgrade

Whats a good PC graphics upgrade for the GeForce GTX 1080? A great upgrade graphics card would be a 20 Series GeForce RTX 2080, which has 22% better performance and can run 997 of the top 1000 demanding game requirements today.

GeForce GTX 1080 Game Requirement Analysis

Overview
GeForce GTX 1080 is a High-End Graphics Card based on the Pascal Architecture.

Architecture
It equips a GPU Codenamed P104-400-A1 which is a First Gen Pascal GPU and has 20 SM activated, offering 2560 Shader Processing Units, 160 TMUs and 64 ROPs.

GPU
The central unit runs at 1607MHz and goes up to 1733MHz, in Turbo Mode.

Memory
The GPU accesses a 8GB frame buffer of Second Gen GDDR5X, through a 256-bit memory interface, while the Memory Clock Operates at 1251MHz.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 180W, it requires at least a 500W PSU with one available 8-pin connector.

Performance
Benchmarks Indicate GeForce GTX 1080 can be over 25% Faster than GeForce GTX 980 Ti at 4K. In Fact, even the Dual Radeon R9 295X2 is easily topped.
At 1920x1080, the default rank for all GD Graphics Card, expect a performance boost ranging between 20% and 30%, over GeForce GTX 980 Ti.
As of May 2016, GeForce GTX 1080 is the fastest single Graphics Card available.

System Suggestions
GeForce GTX 1080 is best suited for resolutions up to and including 2560x1600. We recommend a High-End Processor and 16GB of RAM for Optimal Performance.

Which Titan?

It's better than all titans to now. Only the new Titan X (Pascal version, released 2nd next month) is going to perform better. But is going to cost 1200USD.

1080 is better than Titan Z. Titan Z is two titan blacks.

Wait for the new Titan X (P) if you really can afford it. Upgrading from Titan blacks it's not worth it unless you're tired of sli problems (if you have any).

Haha. My current 980Ti is outdated so I feel ya. The 1080 is still in the 4770 rig as I've not received the WB yet from EK. :/

According to GD, if you go with the GTX 1070 MSI Gaming X 8GB you'll get only 5% less performance for -450 USD. That's what I'm planning on going with.

Fair enough. If you're in no hurry to upgrade, waiting is usually a good choice (especially with prices for the 1070 and 1080 being as inflated as they are right now).

Don't take the GD thingy too serious. It's more like a 'where you at' compared to real-life performance.

Depends on the game but mostly yes AM3+ cpus are really old and not up to snuff to the likes of skylake i5s even more so as it isnt a "true" octa core cpu.

Yeah, I'm waiting for validation too - I've submitted Cinebench, Firestrike and Heaven. Shame I couldn't find a Firestrike Ultra option. I guess I'll have to submit FS Extreme then.

Go to your profile and above your rig details you'll see a "+ Add benchmarks" button. From there just read on and the info is pretty well-explained :)
In short - you benchmark your PC using one or more recognised tools, make a screenshot showing your result along with your specs and you're done :)
I.E.: mine looks LIKE THIS
Then you just wait for one of the appropriate admins to check your submission(s) and if everything is ok - they'll approve it. Then your rig will officially be validated on GD, allowing you to use a variety of tools and generally letting people know you actually own the rig of those specs :)

In all seriousness - I still have it :D
I just wanted a new kickass rig I could do some hardcore gaming and video work on. Upgraded to a massive screen, etc. So far - love it!
