How well can the Radeon R9 290 run games
22 May 2020 - Graphics card reviewed

While some games have more powerful requirements than this GPU, the Radeon R9 290 is only really challenged by the most demanding games released today, but normally it is more than capable of running games with a stable frame rate at 1080p. DirectX 11 gaming system requirements will be met by this gpu.

We take a look at game performance achieved on this graphics card when running 2020 popular games. This short Radeon R9 290 game hardware review looks at the graphics card frame rate performance on Ultra graphics settings at 1080p, 1440p and 4K screen resolutions. This graphics hardware can run 229 of the 1000 most demanding PC games played today.

The Radeon R9 290 graphics card is returning a reasonable performance on Crucible at 1080p of 46 frames per second at Ultra graphics settings. Another popular title that is good to benchmark graphics cards against is Mafia: Definitive Edition which we predict will get playable frame rates of 38 FPS. A third game we can look at on Ultra at 1080p is the popular Call of Duty Warzone, which was getting 42 FPS under tests.

One of the growing popular screen resolutions for PC gaming is the wider 1440p. So we wanted to see how well the Radeon R9 290 performed at 1440p by taking a look at some of the current popular games. First we looked at Crucible and saw it deliver playable frames per second across the following graphics settings - Low: 93 FPS, Medium: 73 FPS, High: 49 FPS and Ultra: 35 FPS. We then checked the performance on Mafia: Definitive Edition to predict if that will run well. It is predicted to be playable with a 29 FPS at Ultra 1440p. Looking at a few of these 1440p results for the Radeon R9 290 we get the impression that it is certainly a viable option for these higher gaming resolutions. Remember that if you suffer some 1440p FPS drops the you can usually tweak modern game graphics settings until you get a near High graphics setting experience with this Graphics card.

How many years will the Radeon R9 290 graphics card play newly released games and how long until you should consider upgrading the Radeon R9 290 in your PC? Our current calculations suggest a graphics card upgrade will be required in around 12-18 months

Whats a good PC graphics upgrade for the Radeon R9 290? A good choice when looking to upgrade the Radeon R9 290 would be the 16 Series GeForce GTX 1660 Ti 6GB which meets 866 of the 1000 top game’s recommended system requirements and has 56% better performance. Alternatively if you want an upgrade suggestion for the Radeon R9 290 then a good choice would be RX 5000 Series Radeon RX 5500 4GB as this is better than 707 of the top 1000 most demanding game requirements with 22% better performance as well.

Radeon R9 290 Game Requirement Analysis

Overview
Radeon R9 290 is a High-End Graphics Card based on the First Revision of the Graphics Core Next (GCN) Architecture.

Architecture
The GCN 1.1 revision of the Graphics Core Next Architecture adds new important technologies and is largely oriented for energy efficiency. New technologies such as PowerTune and TrueAudio are the biggest additions as well as DirectX 11.2 support.

GPU
It equips a GPU Codenamed Hawaii PRO which has 60 Compute Units activated and thus offers 2560 Shader Processing Units, 160 TMUs and 64 ROPs. The Central Unit is clocked at 947MHz.

Memory
The GPU accesses a 4GB frame buffer of fast GDDR5, through a 512-bit memory interface. The size of the frame buffer is adequate. The Memory Clock Operates at 1250MHz.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 275W, it requires at least a 750W PSU with one available 6-pin and one available 8-pin connectors.

Performance
Radeon R9 290 competes with GeForce GTX 780
but it proves to be slower than the latter at resolutions up to 1920x1080 but takes the lead beyond that.

System Suggestions
Radeon R9 290 is best suited for resolutions up to and including 2560x1440. We recommend a Very Strong Processor and 8GB of RAM for Optimal Performance.
