How well can the Radeon R9 380 run games
AMD Radeon R9 380
10 Aug 2021 - Graphics card reviewed

Based on current gaming requirements the Radeon R9 380 is considered one of the weakest cards and wont meet modern AAA game specs.

Capable of running games with up to a DirectX 12 requirement.

How well will the Radeon R9 380 run 2021 games? We will take a look at the biggest releases and frames per second analysis on Ultra graphics settings. When considering how well this graphics card can run the 1000 most demanding games available today it can best 194 of the games’ recommended graphics requirements.

The Radeon R9 380 graphics card is predicted to return a weak performance on Dying Light 2 at 1080p of 0 frames per second at Ultra graphics settings. Another popular title that is good to benchmark graphics cards against is Back 4 Blood which we saw got weak frame rates of 12 FPS. A third game we can look at on Ultra at 1080p is the popular Days Gone, which was getting 23 FPS under tests.

We move on to 1440p, and predict that Dying Light 2 will deliver weak FPS results. Here are the graphic presets - Low: 0 FPS, Medium: 0 FPS, High: 0 FPS and Ultra: 0 FPS. Next we have Back 4 Blood running on Radeon R9 380 which gets L: 23FPS, M: 18FPS, H: 12FPS, U: 9FPS. And for performance contrast the popular Days Gone gets L: 45FPS, M: 36FPS, H: 24FPS, U: 17FPS at 1440p. Gaming at 1440p with the Radeon R9 380 is not a viable PC gaming choice.

How many years will the Radeon R9 380 graphics card play newly released games and how long until you should consider upgrading the Radeon R9 380 in your PC? We think this Radeon R9 380 has around 6-12 months until an upgrade should be considered.

Whats a good PC graphics upgrade for the Radeon R9 380? A great upgrade graphics card would be a RX 5000 Series Radeon RX 5500 4GB, which has 63% better performance and can run 625 of the top 1000 demanding game requirements today. Alternatively if you want an upgrade suggestion for the Radeon R9 380 then a good choice would be RX 5000 Series Radeon RX 5300 as this is better than 311 of the top 1000 most demanding game requirements with 35% better performance as well.

Radeon R9 380 Game Requirement Analysis

Overview
Radeon R9 380 2GB is a Performance Graphics Card based on the Second Revision of the Graphics Core Next (GCN) Architecture.

Architecture
The GCN 1.2 revision of the Graphics Core Next Architecture improves memory bandwidth performance which allows AMD to produce Graphics Cards with smaller data transfer rates without causing too much impact on the overall performance. This is done by using lossless delta color compression.
GCN 1.2 also adds improved Tesselation and video encoding/decoding performance as well as DirectX 12.0 Support.

GPU
It equips a GPU Codenamed Antigua PRO which has 28 Compute Units activated and thus offers 1792 Shader Processing Units, 112 TMUs and 32 ROPs. The Central Unit is Clocked at 950MHz.

Memory
The GPU accesses a 2GB frame buffer of fast GDDR5, through a 256-bit memory interface. The size of the frame buffer is adequate. The Memory Clock Operates at 1375MHz.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 190W, it requires at least a 500W PSU with two available 6-pin connectors.

Performance
Radeon R9 380 2GB is essentially a faster Radeon R9 285 2GB and competes with GeForce GTX 960 2GB.
Its release Price of $199 doesn't make it a very competitive Graphics Card because it matches GeForce GTX 960 2GB (also available for $199) but has significant less overclock potential, heats more and requires more energy to power up.

System Suggestions
Radeon R9 380 2GB is best suited for resolutions up to and including 1920x1080. We recommend a Strong Processor and 8GB of RAM for Optimal Performance.
