How well can the GeForce GTX 960 2GB run games
Nvidia GeForce GTX 960 2GB
10 Aug 2021 - Graphics card reviewed

Based on current gaming requirements the GeForce GTX 960 2GB is considered one of the weakest cards and wont meet modern AAA game specs.

This card meets game requirements up to DirectX 12.

Here is a performance review on how capable the GeForce GTX 960 2GB is at running the more popular games of 2021. Specifically looking at this PC hardware’s ability to get suitable frames per second to play on Ultra game settings and what FPS it might get on 1080p, 1440p and 4K screen res. When considering how well this graphics card can run the 1000 most demanding games available today it can best 164 of the games’ recommended graphics requirements.

The GeForce GTX 960 2GB graphics card is returning a weak performance on Resident Evil 8 at 1080p of 0 frames per second at Ultra graphics settings. Another popular title that is good to benchmark graphics cards against is Star Citizen which we predict will get weak frame rates of 20 FPS. A third game we can look at on Ultra at 1080p is the popular Battlefield 2042, which is predicted to get 0 FPS under tests.

With PC gamers looking for larger screen sizes like 1440p we tested the GeForce GTX 960 2GB by playing Resident Evil 8 which yielded a weak performance. Its FPS results for the graphics settings are as follows - L: 0FPS, M: 0FPS, H: 0FPS, U: 0FPS. Another popular game we researched with this card was Star Citizen and that was weak. This graphics card is predicted to deliver 15 FPS at Ultra 1440p. Another popular title was Battlefield 2042 which is predicted to get weak results with a 0FPS on Ultra 1440p. After a look at the popular games running at 1440p with the GeForce GTX 960 2GB, this is not a viable PC gaming choice.

How many years will the GeForce GTX 960 2GB graphics card play newly released games and how long until you should consider upgrading the GeForce GTX 960 2GB in your PC? We think this GeForce GTX 960 2GB has around 6-12 months until an upgrade should be considered.

Whats a good PC graphics upgrade for the GeForce GTX 960 2GB? A good choice when looking to upgrade the GeForce GTX 960 2GB would be the RX 5000 Series Radeon RX 5500 4GB which meets 634 of the 1000 top game’s recommended system requirements and has 71% better performance. Alternatively we would suggest getting a RX 5000 Series Radeon RX 5300, as it can run 312 of the top 1000 demanding game requirements today with 41% increased graphics performance.

GeForce GTX 960 2GB Game Requirement Analysis

Overview
GeForce GTX 960 2GB is a Performance Graphics Card based on the Second Revision of the Maxwell architecture.

Architecture
The Second variant of the Maxwell Architecture, despite being also manufactured with a 28nm technology, has an extremely large L2 Cache and features a Third Generation Delta Color Compression which allows NVIDIA to produce Graphics Cards with relatively small memory data transfer rates, without causing too much impact on the overall performance. Furthermore, the Shaders have been redesigned and are both more powerful and energy efficient.
The Second Revision of Maxwell also adds the VXGI (Voxel Global Illumination) Technology which makes scenes significantly more lifelike and believable as light interacts more realistically in the game environment and the MFAA Technology which provides the same effect as MSAA but at a much lower performance cost.

GPU
It equips a GPU Codenamed GM206-300-A1 which has 8 Stream Multiprocessors activated and thus offers 1024 Shader Processing Units, 64 TMUs and 32 ROPs. The Central Unit is initially clocked at 1127MHz and goes up to 1158MHz, in Turbo Mode.

Memory
The GPU accesses a 2GB frame buffer of fast GDDR5, through a 128-bit memory interface. The size of the frame buffer is adequate. The Memory Clock Operates at 1753MHz.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 120W, it requires at least a 400W PSU with one available 6-pin connector.

Performance
At 1920x1080, the best suited resolution for GeForce GTX 960, benchmarks indicate its performance is a little over the older GeForce GTX 670.
Therefore, GeForce GTX 770 and even Radeon R9 280X are still faster, though less energy efficient.

System Suggestions
GeForce GTX 960 2GB is best suited for resolutions up to and including 1920x1080. We recommend a Strong Processor and 8GB of RAM for Optimal Performance.
