Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 PNY 4GB Edition
10 Aug 2021 - Graphics card reviewed

This graphics card offers upper mid level gaming performance. The GeForce GTX 980 PNY 4GB Edition GPU could struggle if it was to try and run the most demanding games available today, but it meets a lot of game system requirements found in today’s games.

This card meets game requirements up to DirectX 12.

Here we take a closer look at the various performances across 1080p, 1440p and 4K screen resolutions for the GeForce GTX 980 PNY 4GB Edition. In particular this is looking at the Ultra graphics settings to see what sort of FPS this graphics card can get across some of the more popular games played in 2021. Of the 1000 most demanding recommended specs found in game requirements today, this gpu is more powerful than the graphics requirement of 632 games in todays list.

With 1080p being the most common gaming resolution at the moment we explored how well the GeForce GTX 980 PNY 4GB Edition can run FIFA 22 at 1080p and predict it will return strong frame rates at the following graphics settings - Low: 227 FPS, Medium: 179 FPS, High: 120 FPS and Ultra: 86 FPS. For performance contrast we can see that Far Cry 6 is predicted to return a playable 28 FPS at Ultra 1080p.

Next up we increase screen res tests to accommodate the growing in popularity 1440p screen size. So we researched the upcoming FIFA 22 to predict how the GeForce GTX 980 PNY 4GB Edition would deal with it. Our research revealed a good series of FPS results across these graphics presets - Low: 173 FPS, Medium: 136 FPS, High: 92 FPS and Ultra: 66 FPS. Next we looked at Far Cry 6 which we predict will be weak with a 21 FPS at Ultra 1440p. And finally looked at Days Gone that got an Ultra 1440p FPS of 38. Looking at a few of these 1440p results for the GeForce GTX 980 PNY 4GB Edition we get the impression that it is capable of delivering a solid gaming experience across larger screen sized monitors. We expect to see High and Ultra graphics settings across most games at 1440p with this GPU.

How many years will the GeForce GTX 980 PNY 4GB Edition graphics card play newly released games and how long until you should consider upgrading the GeForce GTX 980 PNY 4GB Edition in your PC? Upgrade time for this GPU is currently placed at 2 years

Whats a good PC graphics upgrade for the GeForce GTX 980 PNY 4GB Edition? A good upgrade choice for this graphics card today would be the 30 Series GeForce RTX 3050 Ti. For comparison of the 1000 most demanding games around today this suggested upgrade is 54% better and can meet 976 of their recommended requirements. An alternative great upgrade graphics card would be a R-500 Series Radeon RX Vega 64 8GB, which has 46% better performance and can run 967 of the top 1000 demanding game requirements today.
