How well can the GeForce GTX 980 4GB SLI run games
Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 4GB SLI
10 Aug 2021 - Graphics card reviewed

This computer hardware provides top end graphics. The GeForce GTX 980 4GB SLI will easily meet recommended system requirements of games released today. This is a strong benchmarker on modern games and can often return excellent frame rates at high and ultra 1080p. But the GeForce GTX 980 4GB SLI can also run 1440p pc system requirements.

This card meets game requirements up to DirectX 12.

Lets look at the GeForce GTX 980 4GB SLI game performance guide for some of the biggest games played in 2022. In particular we will see how well this graphics card runs on Ultra settings on 1080p resolution as well as 1440p and 4K. This graphics hardware can run 940 of the 1000 most demanding PC games played today.

Now onto the frame rates achieved at 1080p. We are seeing Far Cry 6 getting 50 FPS with the GeForce GTX 980 4GB SLI, Back 4 Blood getting 81 FPS and Star Citizen predicted to get 77 frames per second. All run on Ultra at 1920x1080 screen res.

One of the growing popular screen resolutions for PC gaming is the wider 1440p. So we wanted to see how well the GeForce GTX 980 4GB SLI performed at 1440p by taking a look at some of the current popular games. First we looked at Far Cry 6 and saw it deliver playable frames per second across the following graphics settings - Low: 101 FPS, Medium: 79 FPS, High: 53 FPS and Ultra: 38 FPS. We then checked the performance on Back 4 Blood to see if that runs well. It was good with a 62 FPS at Ultra 1440p. Looking at a few of these 1440p results for the GeForce GTX 980 4GB SLI we get the impression that it is one of the better graphics cards for gaming at this screen resolution. We will see 1440p Ultra and High settings across almost all current games.

How many years will the GeForce GTX 980 4GB SLI graphics card play newly released games and how long until you should consider upgrading the GeForce GTX 980 4GB SLI in your PC? No graphics card upgrade required for 2 to 3 years of meeting top end game system requirements

Whats a good PC graphics upgrade for the GeForce GTX 980 4GB SLI? There are no graphics cards on the current market that would provide a big enough increase in performance to warrant upgrading the GeForce GTX 980 4GB SLI.

GeForce GTX 980 4GB SLI Game Requirement Analysis

Overview
GeForce GTX 980 4GB SLI is a solution of two GeForce GTX 980 4GB put together using NVIDIA's SLI technology.

Architecture
The Second variant of the Maxwell Architecture, despite being also manufactured with a 28nm technology, has an extremely large L2 Cache and features a Third Generation Delta Color Compression which allows NVIDIA to produce Graphics Cards with relatively small memory data transfer rates, without causing too much impact on the overall performance. Furthermore, the Shaders have been redesigned and are both more powerful and energy efficient.

GPU
It consists of 2 GPUs codenamed GM204-400-A1 which, together, offer 4096 Shader Processing Units, 256 TMUs and 128 ROPs, on a 512-bit memory interface of fast GDDR5. The central unit runs at 1126MHz and goes up to 1216MHz, in Turbo Mode, while the memory clock operates at 1753MHz.

Power Consumption
Power Consumption lies between 300W and 400W.

Performance
Gaming benchmarks prove that at 4K (3840x2160) GeForce GTX 980 4GB SLI is over 7% faster than AMD's Radeon R9 295X2.

System Suggestions
We recommend a very strong processor (Intel Core i7 Six Core/AMD FX Eight Core) and 16GB of RAM for a system with GeForce GTX 980 4GB SLI.
