How well can the GeForce GTX 970M 6GB SLI run games
Nvidia GeForce GTX 970M 6GB SLI
10 Aug 2021 - Graphics card reviewed

While some games have more powerful requirements than this GPU, the GeForce GTX 970M 6GB SLI is only really challenged by the most demanding games released today, but normally it is more than capable of running games with a stable frame rate at 1080p.

GeForce GTX 970M 6GB SLI is capable of DirectX 12 gaming requirements.

Here we take a closer look at the various performances across 1080p, 1440p and 4K screen resolutions for the GeForce GTX 970M 6GB SLI. In particular this is looking at the Ultra graphics settings to see what sort of FPS this graphics card can get across some of the more popular games played in 2022. The GeForce GTX 970M 6GB SLI can run the recommended graphics system requirements for 728 games today, of the top 1000 most demanding.

A GeForce GTX 970M 6GB SLI card at 1080p is seeing a weak frame rate when running Battlefield 2042 on Ultra - 19 FPS. Lets look at the performance its getting on Resident Evil 8 which is 36 FPS. To add a bit more variety lets see how the popular Star Citizen is predicted to perform on this hardware, which gets a reasonable 54 FPS.

Increasing resolution to 1440p is something a number of PC gamers are doing today. We tested the GeForce GTX 970M 6GB SLI at 1440p with Battlefield 2042, which got a weak set of FPS results. These were, Low: 38 FPS, Medium: 30 FPS, High: 20 FPS and Ultra: 14 FPS. We then checked out Resident Evil 8 which had a set of graphics results as followed, L: 72FPS, M: 57FPS, H: 38FPS, U: 27FPS. And another popular game was Star Citizen with predictions of L: 109FPS, M: 86FPS, H: 58FPS, U: 41FPS at 1440p. After a look at the popular games running at 1440p with the GeForce GTX 970M 6GB SLI, this is a reasonable performance fit for this resolution. Some of the more resource intensive games may well need a few graphical tweak to get the most out of the graphics card at this increased resolution.

How many years will the GeForce GTX 970M 6GB SLI graphics card play newly released games and how long until you should consider upgrading the GeForce GTX 970M 6GB SLI in your PC? There is still 2 years of top end gaming left in this GeForce GTX 970M 6GB SLI

Whats a good PC graphics upgrade for the GeForce GTX 970M 6GB SLI? A suitable upgrade choice for the GeForce GTX 970M 6GB SLI is the 20 Series GeForce RTX 2070 Super Max-Q, which is 30% more powerful and can run 817 of the 1000 most demanding PC games beating their recommended requirements.

GeForce GTX 970M 6GB SLI Game Requirement Analysis

Overview
GeForce GTX 970M 6GB SLI is a solution of two GeForce GTX 970M 6GB put together using NVIDIA's SLI technology.

Architecture
The Second variant of the Maxwell Architecture, despite being also manufactured with a 28nm technology, has an extremely large L2 Cache and features a Third Generation Delta Color Compression which allows NVIDIA to produce Graphics Cards with relatively small memory data transfer rates, without causing too much impact on the overall performance. Furthermore, the Shaders have been redesigned and are both more powerful and energy efficient.

GPU
It consists of 2 GPUs codenamed GM204-N16E-GT-A2 which, together, offer 2560 Shader Processing Units, 160 TMUs and 96 ROPs, on a 384-bit memory interface of fast GDDR5. The central unit runs at 924MHz and goes up to 993MHz, in Turbo Mode, while the memory clock operates at 1253MHz.

Power Consumption
Power Consumption lies between 125W and 150W.

Performance
Benchmarks indicate this SLI setup is overall as fast as a desktop GeForce GTX 980 4GB. It surpasses GeForce GTX 880M in SLI easily and allows for even the most demanding games to be fully maxed out at 1080p.

System Suggestions
We recommend a very strong processor (Intel Core i7 Quad Core Processor) and 12GB of RAM for a system with GeForce GTX 970M 6GB SLI.
