Overview
GeForce GTX 970M 3GB is a high-end Mobile Graphics Card based on the second revision of the Maxwell architecture.
Architecture
The Second variant of the Maxwell Architecture, despite being also manufactured with a 28nm technology, has an extremely large L2 Cache and features a Third Generation Delta Color Compression which allows NVIDIA to produce Graphics Cards with relatively small memory data transfer rates, without causing too much impact on the overall performance. Furthermore, the Shaders have been redesigned and are both more powerful and energy efficient.
The Second Revision of Maxwell also adds the VXGI (Voxel Global Illumination) Technology which makes scenes significantly more lifelike and believable as light interacts more realistically in the game environment and the MFAA Technology which provides the same effect as MSAA but at a much lower performance cost.
GPU
It equips a GPU codenamed GM204 which has 10 SM activated and thus offers 1280 Shader Processing Units, 80 TMUs and 48 ROPs. The central unit runs at 924MHz and goes up to 993MHz, in Turbo Mode.
Memory
The GPU accesses a 3GB frame buffer of fast GDDR5, through a 192-bit memory interface. The memory clock operates at 1253MHz. The frame buffer size is adequate and any extra memory wouldn't add any extra performance.
Features
DirectX 12.0 Support (11.0 Hardware Default) and support for SLI, GameStream, G-SYNC, GPU Boost 2.0, GeForce Experience, PhysX and other technologies.
Temperature
The Card is known to run cool. However, ultimately, it all depends on the notebook's cooling system.
Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 81W, it will only be equipped in large notebooks.
Performance
Benchmarks indicate its performance is over 10% faster than GeForce GTX 880M. Therefore, it should even surpass GeForce GTX 760 and be around as fast as desktop GeForce GTX 670. GeForce GTX 970M is therefore the second fastest mobile Graphics Card as of October 2014 and AMD's Radeon R9 M290X is beaten in over 20%.
System Suggestions
We recommend a very strong processor (Intel Core i7 Mobile Quad Core) and 8GB of RAM for a notebook with GeForce GTX 970M 6GB.

can this card be OC in an alienware laptop?
yes but you will need an external cooler to make the most of it cuz it will throttle. there will be a point that the "clock" keeps going up but in reality its stopped.
Should I upgrade to this one?
yes
my base clock is reported to be 540. gpuz doesn't say a boost clock like I did with a 950m but 3dmark lists my boost clock speed correctly.
My default memory clock is 2505MHz, not 1253MHz.
because its ddr, that's its effective rate. its true speed is the 1253.
My boost clock is not 993mhz,it's 1038mhz.with this boost my pixel fillrate is 49.8(44.4 without boost) and my texture fillrate is 83(79.9 without boost). Thanks
Love this card + the i7 4710MQ in the gt70
hello, ive seen that 840m can be upgraded to this 970m card somehow. is it possible ?
if u go to 840m gamedebate data it says so
Oh, that is indeed a bit miss leading. That information means to say it is not worth it to buy a new laptop with a Graphics Card weaker than this one :(
1% better. UGGHH the laptops are beating my desktop this annoys me! :/
You shouldn't be with how much you have to spend to get one of those in a laptop:P
True that, to be honest it's not worth the benefits in portability for that ridiculous price they normally charge. I sometimes think people just buy gaming laptops because they're not arsed to build them themselves…
i agree.
You forget that some people travel a lot which requires them to have a laptop.
i go to university so i need a laptop (move to my hometown and back to university) also i want it so i can lan with my friends we all get tohether to a house and play with our laptops. much better from a desktop in that case
Beats your desktop not only by power, but by efficiency and heat. And no, laptops don't necessarily cost the prices that you see in the store if you buy used.
People buy them because there are few choices for barebones laptops and
putting together delicate, small laptop components take much more skill than assembling a desktop. Besides, you wouldn't be complaining that laptops can beat your rig if you didn't care about portability. :P They would just be another pc.
stop whining!your gpu is 3 yrs old and is 2 generations older than my laptop!
price WAS argument against laptops. Just seen an MSI 17" core i7 laptop in a shop with this 970m for 999 €. Holy cow!
good price,it's about 400-500$ less than in canada. If you can get the laptop with gtx 980m for 1400 euro grab it!:)
Anyone know where this can be bought from? (just the card on its own)
are this gpu good enough to play latest game on high settings with 1080p?
Yes, easily!
within the next few months im thinking of buying a new laptop with one of these, im just wondering will it run games better than ps4/xbox one for the next 4-6 years whatever current gen?
I can't say that buddy. It doesn't make sense to compare a mobile Graphics Card to a console…
yeah im just saying that this gpu gtx 970m can run any game better than ps4/xbox one ever could, depends on optimisation ofcs but still, would run most games properly
What kind of question was that? Of course it runs any game at high settings and 1080p. Look up the equivalent graphics cards in the consoles and compare, It's far better and will last much longer.
turbo boost is equal or worse than overclock?if it's the same i'll add oc for cpu and gpu. Thanks!
what do you mean?
I think you can set the oc up 5%. Turbo boost isn't exactly the same but it turns up the clock when necessary for heat. The only time you'd see a difference in performance w an oc rig is when turbo boost would've also upped the power.
