How well can the GeForce GTX 960 Asus Strix DirectCU II OC 4GB Edition run games
28 Nov 2019 - Graphics card reviewed

One of the more powerful mid range graphics cards, the GeForce GTX 960 Asus Strix DirectCU II OC 4GB Edition might struggle sometimes with the more system demanding game requirements. All games with system requirements of DirectX 12 or lower are met by this card.

What FPS performance can the GeForce GTX 960 Asus Strix DirectCU II OC 4GB Edition get on latest AAA 2019 games? In particular our game review looks at the FPS achieved running on Ultra graphics settings on the 1080p screen resolution as well as 1440p and 4K. Of the 1000 most demanding recommended specs found in game requirements today, this gpu is more powerful than the graphics requirement of 242 games in todays list.

With 1080p being the most common gaming resolution at the moment we explored how well the GeForce GTX 960 Asus Strix DirectCU II OC 4GB Edition can run Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p and predict it will return weak frame rates at the following graphics settings - Low: 0 FPS, Medium: 0 FPS, High: 0 FPS and Ultra: 0 FPS. For performance contrast we can see that eFootball PES 2020 returns a reasonable 47 FPS at Ultra 1080p.

One of the growing popular screen resolutions for PC gaming is the wider 1440p. So we wanted to see how well the GeForce GTX 960 Asus Strix DirectCU II OC 4GB Edition performed at 1440p by taking a look at some of the current popular games. First we looked at Cyberpunk 2077 and predict it will deliver weak frames per second across the following graphics settings - Low: 0 FPS, Medium: 0 FPS, High: 0 FPS and Ultra: 0 FPS. We then checked the performance on eFootball PES 2020 to see if that runs well. It was playable with a 35 FPS at Ultra 1440p. In summary we feel the GeForce GTX 960 Asus Strix DirectCU II OC 4GB Edition running at 1440p is not ideal and its more advisable to run modern games at 1080p resolution. But if you really want to play games at 1440p then you will likely have to make some graphical adjustments to improve game FPS stability.

How many years will the GeForce GTX 960 Asus Strix DirectCU II OC 4GB Edition graphics card play newly released games and how long until you should consider upgrading the GeForce GTX 960 Asus Strix DirectCU II OC 4GB Edition in your PC? Our current calculations suggest a graphics card upgrade will be required in around 12-18 months

Whats a good PC graphics upgrade for the GeForce GTX 960 Asus Strix DirectCU II OC 4GB Edition? A suitable upgrade choice for the GeForce GTX 960 Asus Strix DirectCU II OC 4GB Edition is the 16 Series GeForce GTX 1660 Ti 6GB, which is 107% more powerful and can run 897 of the 1000 most demanding PC games beating their recommended requirements. Alternatively upgrading this graphics card would have us consider the RX 5000 Series Radeon RX 5500 4GB which is 52% more powerful. This upgrade choice can also run 667 games from the most demanding games today.

GeForce GTX 960 Asus Strix DirectCU II OC 4GB Edition Game Requirement Analysis

Overview
GeForce GTX 960 Asus Strix DirectCU II OC 4GB Edition is a special edition of NVIDIA's Performance GeForce GTX 960 2GB, created by Asus.

Overclock: Central Unit
The Central Unit now runs at 1253MHz, instead of 1127MHz and goes up to 1316MHz, in Turbo Mode.

Overclock: Memory Clock
The Operating Memory Clock remains the same while the Frame Buffer was doubled to 4GB: a gimmick which doesn't yield any performance boost and can be considered marketing to lure consumers into paying more for the same product.

Cooling Solution
The reference NVIDIA Single-Fan Cooling System has been replaced by Asus's DirectCU II cooling technology which outperforms reference designs with an exclusive 10mm heatpipe that transports 40% more heat away from the GPU.

Performance
Benchmarks indicate a 5% performance over the reference GeForce GTX 960 2GB.

Been using it for a few weeks now, decent GPU for gamers looking to play GTA V, Witcher 3, Far Cry 4 etc. on high-Ultra with atleast 50fps.Gamers looking for more should get a 970 or a R9 390.

No they're not. EVGA's higher clocked and even it weren't, the voltage and temperature affect the max boost. That review is faulty.

Bro, You think this card will use 4GB? Even gtx970 (256BIT BUS!!!!) has trouble and only 3.5GB works fine, the last 512mb is slow. So i don't believe gtx960 can use more then 2-2.5GB…

In the circumstances in which 4GB are needed, the GPU itself (Maxwell GM206-300-A1) is not powerful enough. That's the main problem.
It's like saying you have a large warehouse at the end of the highway waiting to be filled but the lanes are so tight (memory bandwidth) and the cards are so slow (GPU) that you can never really fill the warehouse at convenient time.

I'm gonna have to disagree with the "gimmick" blanket statement being tossed around on GD. In some rare isolated cases the extra frame buffer does help in some games for texture memory sizes. A really good example for this is the game Watch dogs. Having that extra 2GB allows for in-game settings to "high" as apposed to Medium without stuttering… So to give it a blanket statement like this is actually misleading in itself. GD needs to review this policy imo…

not exactly, because the gpu can't use more than 2GB of Vram, or in other words, it can't access all of them at full speed(like the gtx 970's 3.5GB out of 4GB) or at all at the same time, which renders them useless.

This is not a policy it's more like physics. Now I've seen quite a few benchmarks on the gtx960 2gb vs 4gb including frame-times / frame latency, never heard or seen that phenomenon

Guys I bought this and the 4GB frame buffer is perfectly validated.
GTA V, Batman Arkham Knight and some other games go beyond 2GB on my card (even 3.5+GB)and I keep textures and details at max at 1080p with AA on with no stuttering.
