How well can the GeForce GTX 960 Zotac AMP! 4GB Edition run games
25 Feb 2020 - Graphics card reviewed

This graphics card offers upper mid level gaming performance. The GeForce GTX 960 Zotac AMP! 4GB Edition GPU could struggle if it was to try and run the most demanding games available today, but it meets a lot of game system requirements found in today’s games. This card meets game requirements up to DirectX 12.

Here we take a closer look at the various performances across 1080p, 1440p and 4K screen resolutions for the GeForce GTX 960 Zotac AMP! 4GB Edition. In particular this is looking at the Ultra graphics settings to see what sort of FPS this graphics card can get across some of the more popular games played in 2020. This graphics hardware can run 126 of the 1000 most demanding PC games played today.

The GeForce GTX 960 Zotac AMP! 4GB Edition graphics card is returning a weak performance on Red Dead Redemption 2 at 1080p of 19 frames per second at Ultra graphics settings. Another popular title that is good to benchmark graphics cards against is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare which we saw got weak frame rates of 13 FPS. A third game we can look at on Ultra at 1080p is the popular Star Citizen, which is predicted to get 37 FPS under tests.

Next up we increase screen res tests to accommodate the growing in popularity 1440p screen size. So we booted up Red Dead Redemption 2 to see how the GeForce GTX 960 Zotac AMP! 4GB Edition dealt with it. It scored up a weak series of FPS results across these graphics presets - Low: 37 FPS, Medium: 29 FPS, High: 20 FPS and Ultra: 14 FPS. Next we looked at Call of Duty: Modern Warfare which was weak with a 10 FPS at Ultra 1440p. And finally looked at Star Citizen that we predict will get an Ultra 1440p FPS of 28. 1440p gaming on the GeForce GTX 960 Zotac AMP! 4GB Edition is not the best resolution for this GPU, but if you adjust some graphics settings, perhaps lowering to medium or low at 1440p then this graphics card might be ok.

How many years will the GeForce GTX 960 Zotac AMP! 4GB Edition graphics card play newly released games and how long until you should consider upgrading the GeForce GTX 960 Zotac AMP! 4GB Edition in your PC? There is around 6-12 months of top end gaming left in this card, at which point its graphics card replacement time, assuming the GeForce GTX 960 Zotac AMP! 4GB Edition is part of your PC gaming machine.

Whats a good PC graphics upgrade for the GeForce GTX 960 Zotac AMP! 4GB Edition? A great upgrade graphics card would be a 16 Series GeForce GTX 1660 Ti 6GB, which has 107% better performance and can run 874 of the top 1000 demanding game requirements today. Alternatively upgrading this graphics card would have us consider the RX 5000 Series Radeon RX 5500 4GB which is 62% more powerful. This upgrade choice can also run 729 games from the most demanding games today.

GeForce GTX 960 Zotac AMP! 4GB Edition Game Requirement Analysis

Overview
GeForce GTX 960 Zotac AMP! 4GB Edition is a Special Edition of NVIDIA's Performance GeForce GTX 960 2GB, created by Zotac.

Overclock: Central Unit
The Central Unit now runs at 1266MHz, instead of 1127MHz and goes up to 1329MHz, in Turbo Mode.

Overclock: Memory Clock
The Operating Memory Clock and the Frame Buffer remain the same.

Frame Buffer
The Frame Buffer was doubled to 4GB.
While 4GB are needed in a few Modern Games for increased texture detail, the GPU is not powerful enough to work under other circumstances in which 4GB are needed, such as gaming above 1080p and thus a larger frame buffer is mostly a gimmick.

Cooling Solution
The reference NVIDIA Single-Fan Cooling System has been replaced by Zotac's Dual Fan Cooling Solution. This means the card runs cooler under load.

Performance
Benchmarks indicate a 5% performance over the reference GeForce GTX 960 2GB.
