How well can the GeForce GTX 1060 3GB run games
14 Nov 2019 - Graphics card reviewed

The GeForce GTX 1060 3GB is a high performing piece of gaming hardware, still confidently featuring in PC gamer computers. GeForce GTX 1060 3GB is capable of DirectX 12 gaming requirements.

What FPS performance can the GeForce GTX 1060 3GB get on latest AAA 2019 games? In particular our game review looks at the FPS achieved running on Ultra graphics settings on the 1080p screen resolution as well as 1440p and 4K. When considering how well this graphics card can run the 1000 most demanding games available today it can best 606 of the games’ recommended graphics requirements.

The GeForce GTX 1060 3GB graphics card is predicted to return a playable performance on Death Stranding at 1080p of 29 frames per second at Ultra graphics settings. Another popular title that is good to benchmark graphics cards against is Red Dead Redemption 2 which we saw got reasonable frame rates of 45 FPS. A third game we can look at on Ultra at 1080p is the popular Star Wars: Jedi - Fallen Order, which was getting 29 FPS under tests.

Next up we increase screen res tests to accommodate the growing in popularity 1440p screen size. So we researched the upcoming Death Stranding to predict how the GeForce GTX 1060 3GB would deal with it. Our research revealed a weak series of FPS results across these graphics presets - Low: 57 FPS, Medium: 45 FPS, High: 30 FPS and Ultra: 22 FPS. Next we looked at Red Dead Redemption 2 which was playable with a 34 FPS at Ultra 1440p. And finally looked at Star Wars: Jedi - Fallen Order that got an Ultra 1440p FPS of 22. Getting popular modern games to run at 1440p on the GeForce GTX 1060 3GB is a suitable graphics card for this larger screen res. In some cases we might expect some graphics option tweaks down from Ultra to High to help improve FPS stability when gaming at 1440p.

How many years will the GeForce GTX 1060 3GB graphics card play newly released games and how long until you should consider upgrading the GeForce GTX 1060 3GB in your PC? Upgrade time for this GPU is currently placed at 2 years

Whats a good PC graphics upgrade for the GeForce GTX 1060 3GB? A good choice when looking to upgrade the GeForce GTX 1060 3GB would be the 16 Series GeForce GTX 1660 Ti 6GB which meets 901 of the 1000 top game’s recommended system requirements and has 39% better performance. Alternatively upgrading this graphics card would have us consider the R-500 Series Radeon RX Vega 56 8GB which is 47% more powerful. This upgrade choice can also run 962 games from the most demanding games today.

GeForce GTX 1060 3GB Game Requirement Analysis

Overview
GeForce GTX 1060 3GB is currently the entry level Nvidia GTX 1000 performance graphics card, based on the Pascal Architecture. It comes with locked memory of 3GB instead of the full 6GB.

Architecture
It equips a GPU Codenamed P106-300-A1 which is a first gen Pascal GPU and has 9 SM activated, offering 1152 Shader Processing Units (the GTX 1060 6GB version offers 1280 SPU), 72 TMUs and 48 ROPs.

GPU
The central unit runs at 1506MHz and goes up to 1708MHz, when Boost mode is activated.

Memory
The GPU accesses a 3GB frame buffer of GDDR5, through a 192-bit memory interface, while the Memory Clock Operates at 2002MHz.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 120W, it requires at least a 400W PSU with one available 6-pin connector.

Performance
The Geforce GTX 1060 3GB is capable of playing most modern game system requirements at high graphics settings. The 3GB version is normally around 5% worse than the GTX 1060 6GB full fat version in terms of sheer processing power. But its the 3GB memory reduction that will hamper the high quality game textures this card can deliver, making it less future proof as more GPU memory hungry games are released.

This GPU would be THE best GPU ever, if it's price wouldn't be 300 dollars right now in our country… Come on, a GTX 1050 Ti is above 200 right now…

I would not upgrade for Pascal GPU if I had gtx 970 (especially if you game at 900p). If you really want some extra power, overclock your GPU with MSI afterburner, but even without OC, you should be perfectly fine with your card for another year maybe two. Also due to the mining frency GPU's are so overpriced right now. I would wait with GPU upgrade if I were you, however I would add 8 GB of RAM :

Yes, 16 GB of RAM will be plenty. I only mentioned it because I see more and more games having 16 GB as recommended amount of memory.

where is the extra L2 cache used? There are less cores and thus the cache would do nothing but consume power if it was active, which it is not everything is cut NOT just cores.

In many newer games like Dishonored 2 and Fallout 4 you will definitely be CPU-limited but it won't be a game-breaking "bottleneck". 520W PSU is good enough to OC, but I recommend upgrading your CPU first before getting a new graphics card

Only if you're playing cpu intensive games, like some physics simulation dependent games such as Kerbal Space Program, BeamNG and Prepar3d. Their listed system requirements seem low but the actual cpu demand ingame is way higher.

I think your motherboard supports 3 gen too, if so an i7 3770 should do the trick, even with a gtx 1070 should be fine.
