How well can the GeForce GTX 1060 MSI Gaming 3GB run games
Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 MSI Gaming 3GB
10 Aug 2021 - Graphics card reviewed

A mid to low level graphics card, the GeForce GTX 1060 MSI Gaming 3GB is found in budget machines nowadays, struggling to meet AAA system requirements.

GeForce GTX 1060 MSI Gaming 3GB is capable of DirectX 12 gaming requirements.

Here is a quick game performance synopsis for the AAA games played in 2022. In particular we focus on how well the GeForce GTX 1060 MSI Gaming 3GB runs at Ultra graphics settings and what frames per second it is getting at 1080p, 1440p and 4K monitor resolutions. We look at 1000 of the most demanding games available today and this GPU is better than the recommended graphics requirement of more than 434 games in the list.

The 1080p FPS on Ultra for the GeForce GTX 1060 MSI Gaming 3GB shows us that Grand Theft Auto VI is predicted to get a weak result of 23 FPS, and then we are seeing Back 4 Blood returning a reasonable 52 FPS while another game on our list is the Star Citizen which is predicted to get 52 frames per second at Ultra 1080p.

People are turning their increasingly more powerful graphics cards to the popular 1440p screen size so we tested the GeForce GTX 1060 MSI Gaming 3GB to see how it performs on 1440p. First off we have looked at Back 4 Blood where it was playable. The frame rates it scored for the game presets were - Low: 104 FPS, Medium: 82 FPS, High: 55 FPS and Ultra: 39 FPS. We added Star Citizen to our research and predict it will be playable with a 39 FPS at Ultra 1440p. And then researched Grand Theft Auto VI leading us to predict 18 FPS at Ultra 1440p. Running games at 1440p with a GeForce GTX 1060 MSI Gaming 3GB is a reasonable choice for most modern games at 1440p, but you may encounter some need to adjust graphics settings down from Ultra to High in some cases to improve gaming stability.

How many years will the GeForce GTX 1060 MSI Gaming 3GB graphics card play newly released games and how long until you should consider upgrading the GeForce GTX 1060 MSI Gaming 3GB in your PC? Our current calculations suggest a graphics card upgrade will be required in around 12-18 months

Whats a good PC graphics upgrade for the GeForce GTX 1060 MSI Gaming 3GB? There are no graphics cards on the current market that would provide a big enough increase in performance to warrant upgrading the GeForce GTX 1060 MSI Gaming 3GB.

GeForce GTX 1060 MSI Gaming 3GB Game Requirement Analysis

Overview
GeForce GTX 1060 MSI Gaming 3GB is currently the entry level MSI Nvidia GTX 1000 performance graphics card, based on the Pascal Architecture. It comes with locked memory of 3GB instead of the full 6GB.

Architecture
It equips a GPU Codenamed P106-300-A1 which is a first gen Pascal GPU and has 9 SM activated, offering 1152 Shader Processing Units (the GTX 1060 6GB version offers 1280 SPU), 72 TMUs and 48 ROPs.

GPU
The central unit runs at 1569MHz and goes up to 1785MHz, when Boost mode is activated.

Memory
The GPU accesses a 3GB frame buffer of GDDR5, through a 192-bit memory interface, while the Memory Clock Operates at 2002MHz.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 120W, it requires at least a 400W PSU with one available 6-pin connector.

Performance
The GeForce GTX 1060 MSI Gaming 3GB is capable of playing most modern game system requirements at high graphics settings. The 3GB version is normally around 5% worse than the GTX 1060 6GB full fat version in terms of sheer processing power. But its the 3GB memory reduction that will hamper the high quality game textures this card can deliver, making it less future proof, as more games are released that require GPU memory.

We expect this GPU to return around 49+ FPS at high graphics setting on most modern games @ 1080p screen resolution.
