Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 MSI Armor OCV1 3G
10 Aug 2021 - Graphics card reviewed

A mid to low level graphics card, the GeForce GTX 1060 MSI Armor OCV1 3G is found in budget machines nowadays, struggling to meet AAA system requirements.

GeForce GTX 1060 MSI Armor OCV1 3G is capable of DirectX 12 gaming requirements.

We take a look at game performance achieved on this graphics card when running 2023 popular games. This short GeForce GTX 1060 MSI Armor OCV1 3G game hardware review looks at the graphics card frame rate performance on Ultra graphics settings at 1080p, 1440p and 4K screen resolutions. The GeForce GTX 1060 MSI Armor OCV1 3G can run the recommended graphics system requirements for 437 games today, of the top 1000 most demanding.

Running at 1080p this card gets a weak frame rate from Battlefield 2042 with 12 FPS on Ultra. Then we take a look at Star Citizen which is predicted to return a reasonable 53 FPS. Another title that we looked at is the popular Grand Theft Auto VI which we predict will get a playable 25 FPS.

As the PC gaming masses explore larger screen resolutions we decided to run some game checks at 1440p across a few popular games. We discovered the GeForce GTX 1060 MSI Armor OCV1 3G ran Battlefield 2042 to a weak performance level. Results across the graphics settings looked like this, Low: 24 FPS, Medium: 19 FPS, High: 13 FPS and Ultra: 9 FPS. Another game researched was Star Citizen with predictions of L: 106FPS, M: 83FPS, H: 56FPS, U: 40FPS. And then we researched potential graphics card performance on Grand Theft Auto VI, wih estimates revealing L: 49FPS, M: 39FPS, H: 26FPS, U: 19FPS at 1440p. In summary we feel the GeForce GTX 1060 MSI Armor OCV1 3G running at 1440p is going to need to lower its graphics settings to medium on modern games.

How many years will the GeForce GTX 1060 MSI Armor OCV1 3G graphics card play newly released games and how long until you should consider upgrading the GeForce GTX 1060 MSI Armor OCV1 3G in your PC? This GeForce GTX 1060 MSI Armor OCV1 3G card has 12 to 18 months of latest AAA game play left in it before upgrading should be considered

Whats a good PC graphics upgrade for the GeForce GTX 1060 MSI Armor OCV1 3G? There are no graphics cards on the current market that would provide a big enough increase in performance to warrant upgrading the GeForce GTX 1060 MSI Armor OCV1 3G.

GeForce GTX 1060 MSI Armor OCV1 3G Game Requirement Analysis

Overview
GeForce GTX 1060 MSI Armor OCV1 3G is currently the entry level MSI Nvidia GTX 1000 performance graphics card, based on the Pascal Architecture. It comes with locked memory of 3GB instead of the full 6GB.

Architecture
It equips a GPU Codenamed P106-300-A1 which is a first gen Pascal GPU and has 9 SM activated, offering 1152 Shader Processing Units (the GTX 1060 6GB version offers 1280 SPU), 72 TMUs and 48 ROPs.

GPU
The central unit runs at 1544MHz and goes up to 1759MHz, when Boost mode is activated.

Memory
The GPU accesses a 3GB frame buffer of GDDR5, through a 192-bit memory interface, while the Memory Clock Operates at 2002MHz.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 120W, it requires at least a 400W PSU with one available 6-pin connector.

Performance
The GeForce GTX 1060 MSI Armor OCV1 3G is capable of playing most modern game system requirements at high graphics settings. The 3GB version is normally around 5% worse than the GTX 1060 6GB full fat version in terms of sheer processing power. But its the 3GB memory reduction that will hamper the high quality game textures this card can deliver, making it less future proof, as more games are released that require GPU memory.

We expect this GPU to return around 51+ FPS at high graphics setting on most modern games @ 1080p screen resolution.
