Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 MSI OCV1 3G
10 Aug 2021 - Graphics card reviewed

A mid to low level graphics card, the GeForce GTX 1060 MSI OCV1 3G is found in budget machines nowadays, struggling to meet AAA system requirements.

GeForce GTX 1060 MSI OCV1 3G is capable of DirectX 12 gaming requirements.

We take a look at game performance achieved on this graphics card when running 2023 popular games. This short GeForce GTX 1060 MSI OCV1 3G game hardware review looks at the graphics card frame rate performance on Ultra graphics settings at 1080p, 1440p and 4K screen resolutions. Of the 1000 most demanding recommended specs found in game requirements today, this gpu is more powerful than the graphics requirement of 437 games in todays list.

With 1080p being the most common gaming resolution at the moment we explored how well the GeForce GTX 1060 MSI OCV1 3G can run Back 4 Blood at 1080p and saw it return reasonable frame rates at the following graphics settings - Low: 139 FPS, Medium: 109 FPS, High: 74 FPS and Ultra: 53 FPS. For performance contrast we can see that Dying Light 2 returns a playable 25 FPS at Ultra 1080p.

With PC gamers looking for larger screen sizes like 1440p we tested the GeForce GTX 1060 MSI OCV1 3G by playing Back 4 Blood which yielded a playable performance. Its FPS results for the graphics settings are as follows - L: 106FPS, M: 83FPS, H: 56FPS, U: 40FPS. Another popular game we tested with this card was Dying Light 2 and that was weak. This graphics card delivered 19 FPS at Ultra 1440p. Another popular title was Far Cry 6 which gets weak results with a 18FPS on Ultra 1440p. Looking at a few of these 1440p results for the GeForce GTX 1060 MSI OCV1 3G we get the impression that it is a suitable graphics card for this larger screen res. In some cases we might expect some graphics option tweaks down from Ultra to High to help improve FPS stability when gaming at 1440p.

How many years will the GeForce GTX 1060 MSI OCV1 3G graphics card play newly released games and how long until you should consider upgrading the GeForce GTX 1060 MSI OCV1 3G in your PC? This GeForce GTX 1060 MSI OCV1 3G card has 12 to 18 months of latest AAA game play left in it before upgrading should be considered

Whats a good PC graphics upgrade for the GeForce GTX 1060 MSI OCV1 3G? There are no graphics cards on the current market that would provide a big enough increase in performance to warrant upgrading the GeForce GTX 1060 MSI OCV1 3G.

GeForce GTX 1060 MSI OCV1 3G Game Requirement Analysis

Overview
GeForce GTX 1060 MSI OCV1 3G is a single slot, small form factor entry level MSI Nvidia GTX 1000 performance graphics card. Based on the Pascal Architecture, it comes with locked memory of 3GB instead of the full 6GB.

Architecture
It equips a GPU Codenamed P106-300-A1 which is a first gen Pascal GPU and has 9 SM activated, offering 1152 Shader Processing Units (the GTX 1060 6GB version offers 1280 SPU), 72 TMUs and 48 ROPs.

GPU
The central unit runs at 1544MHz and goes up to 1759MHz, when Boost mode is activated.

Memory
The GPU accesses a 3GB frame buffer of GDDR5, through a 192-bit memory interface, while the Memory Clock Operates at 2002MHz.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 120W, it requires at least a 400W PSU with one available 6-pin connector.

Performance
The GeForce GTX 1060 MSI OCV1 3G is capable of playing most modern game system requirements at high graphics settings. The 3GB version is normally around 5% worse than the GTX 1060 6GB full fat version in terms of sheer processing power. But its the 3GB memory reduction that will hamper the high quality game textures this card can deliver, making it less future proof, as more games are released that require GPU memory.

We expect this GPU to return around 50+ FPS at high graphics setting on most modern games @ 1080p screen resolution.
