How well can the Radeon RX 580 8GB run games
AMD Radeon RX 580 8GB
10 Aug 2021 - Graphics card reviewed

While some games have more powerful requirements than this GPU, the Radeon RX 580 8GB is only really challenged by the most demanding games released today, but normally it is more than capable of running games with a stable frame rate at 1080p.

DirectX 12 gaming system requirements will be met by this gpu.

Here we take a closer look at the various performances across 1080p, 1440p and 4K screen resolutions for the Radeon RX 580 8GB. In particular this is looking at the Ultra graphics settings to see what sort of FPS this graphics card can get across some of the more popular games played in 2023. The Radeon RX 580 8GB can run the recommended graphics system requirements for 715 games today, of the top 1000 most demanding.

First we looked at 1080p resolution for the Radeon RX 580 8GB performance to explore what sort of benchmarks it would achieve on the popular title Star Citizen and predict it will deliver reasonable frames per second across the following graphics settings - Low: 141 FPS, Medium: 111 FPS, High: 75 FPS and Ultra: 54 FPS. We proceeded to look at Back 4 Blood to see how that compared and saw that it returned a reasonable 47 FPS at Ultra 1080p.

Next up we increase screen res tests to accommodate the growing in popularity 1440p screen size. So we researched the upcoming Star Citizen to predict how the Radeon RX 580 8GB would deal with it. Our research revealed a playable series of FPS results across these graphics presets - Low: 108 FPS, Medium: 85 FPS, High: 57 FPS and Ultra: 41 FPS. Next we looked at Back 4 Blood which was playable with a 36 FPS at Ultra 1440p. And finally looked at Far Cry 6 that got an Ultra 1440p FPS of 22. 1440p Radeon RX 580 8GB PC gaming is ok at playing most games but might need to have the graphics settings lowered to medium preset in some cases.

How many years will the Radeon RX 580 8GB graphics card play newly released games and how long until you should consider upgrading the Radeon RX 580 8GB in your PC? Upgrade time for this GPU is currently placed at 2 years

Whats a good PC graphics upgrade for the Radeon RX 580 8GB? There are no graphics cards on the current market that would provide a big enough increase in performance to warrant upgrading the Radeon RX 580 8GB.

Radeon RX 580 8GB Game Requirement Analysis

Overview
First off we should point out that this is not the new AMD Vega graphics card line. The new AMD Radeon RX 500 series are an uprated version of the RX 400 series that they are replacing. This RX 580 8GB graphics card is one of the two more powerful models from the new AMD Radeon RX 500 Series.

This RX 580 is the 8GB version and there is also the lower VRAM version, RX580 4GB available.

Architecture
It equips a GPU codenamed Polaris 20 XTX, which has 2304 shader processing units, 144 TMUs and 32 ROPs.

GPU
The RX 580 8GB central processing unit runs at 1257MHz and goes up to 1340MHz when in boost and turbo mode.

Memory
The GPU accesses a 8GB frame buffer of fast GDDR5, through a 256-bit memory interface, while the Memory Clock operates at 2000MHz.

Power Consumption
The RX 580 8GB has a power TDP requirement of 150W. This means it will require at least a 500W PSU with one dedicated 8-pin connector.

Performance
Early benchmarks indicate that the AMD Radeon RX 580 8GB will be similar in performance to the Nvidia GTX 1060 in terms of gaming performance. This puts the RX 580 8GB about 8% faster than the model it replaced, the AMD Radeon RX 480 8GB. Comparing the RX 580 to RX 570 we see 1440p frame rates around 8-15% better with the RX580 version

System Suggestions
The new Radeon RX 580 8GB releases on the 18th April 2017 and is best suited for resolutions up to and including 2560x1440. We recommend a high-end processor, like the new Ryzen R5 and at least 8GB of RAM for optimal gaming performance.
