How well can the Radeon RX 580 PowerColor Red Dragon 4GB run games
AMD Radeon RX 580 PowerColor Red Dragon 4GB
10 Aug 2021 - Graphics card reviewed

A mid to low level graphics card, the Radeon RX 580 PowerColor Red Dragon 4GB is found in budget machines nowadays, struggling to meet AAA system requirements.

All games with system requirements of DirectX 12 or lower are met by this card.

Here we take a closer look at the various performances across 1080p, 1440p and 4K screen resolutions for the Radeon RX 580 PowerColor Red Dragon 4GB. In particular this is looking at the Ultra graphics settings to see what sort of FPS this graphics card can get across some of the more popular games played in 2022. We look at 1000 of the most demanding games available today and this GPU is better than the recommended graphics requirement of more than 448 games in the list.

With 1080p being the most common gaming resolution at the moment we explored how well the Radeon RX 580 PowerColor Red Dragon 4GB can run Battlefield 2042 at 1080p and saw it return weak frame rates at the following graphics settings - Low: 36 FPS, Medium: 28 FPS, High: 19 FPS and Ultra: 14 FPS. For performance contrast we can see that Grand Theft Auto VI is predicted to return a weak 22 FPS at Ultra 1080p.

Moving screen sizes up to 1440p we ran Battlefield 2042 on the Radeon RX 580 PowerColor Red Dragon 4GB to see that it got a weak set of frame rates. Here are the low to ultra results at 1440p - L: 27FPS, M: 21FPS, H: 14FPS, U: 10FPS. Another popular game to investigate at 1440p with this card was Grand Theft Auto VI which we predicted will be weak in performance netting an Ultra FPS of 17 FPS. Finally we then took a look at Dying Light 2 where its predicted Ultra 1440p Frame rates were weak at 23 FPS. After a look at the popular games running at 1440p with the Radeon RX 580 PowerColor Red Dragon 4GB, this is going to struggle to keep a solid FPS, but a modern game could have a few options tweaked to get it playable at this res but on low graphics settings.

How many years will the Radeon RX 580 PowerColor Red Dragon 4GB graphics card play newly released games and how long until you should consider upgrading the Radeon RX 580 PowerColor Red Dragon 4GB in your PC? 12-18 months of top end gaming is still left in this graphics card

Whats a good PC graphics upgrade for the Radeon RX 580 PowerColor Red Dragon 4GB? Radeon RX 580 PowerColor Red Dragon 4GB Game Requirement Analysis

Overview
First off we should point out that this is not the new AMD Vega graphics card line. The new AMD Radeon RX 500 series are an uprated version of the RX 400 series that they are replacing. This PowerColor RX 580 Red Dragon graphics card is one of the two more powerful models from the new AMD Radeon RX 500 Series.

This RX 580 is the 4GB version and there is also the higher VRAM version, RX580 8GB available.

Architecture
It equips a GPU codenamed Polaris 20 XTX, which has 2304 shader processing units, 144 TMUs and 32 ROPs.

GPU
The Radeon RX 580 PowerColor Red Dragon 4GB central processing unit runs at 1257MHz and goes up to a top 1350MHz when in boost and turbo mode with the reference RX 580 card's boost is 1340MHz.

Memory
The GPU accesses a 4GB frame buffer of fast GDDR5, through a 256-bit memory interface, while the Memory Clock operates at 1750MHz.

Power Consumption
The RX 580 4GB has a power TDP requirement of 150W. This means it will require at least a 500W PSU with one dedicated 8-pin connector.

Performance
Early benchmarks indicate that the AMD Radeon RX 580 4GB will be similar in performance to the Nvidia GTX 1060 in terms of gaming performance. This puts the RX 580 4GB about 8% faster than the model it replaced, the AMD Radeon RX 480 4GB. Comparing the RX 580 to RX 570 we see 1440p frame rates around 8-15% better with the RX580 version

System Suggestions
The new PowerColor RX 580 Red Dragon 4GB released on the 18th April 2017 and is best suited for resolutions up to and including 2560x1440. We recommend a high-end processor, like the new Ryzen R5 and at least 8GB of RAM for optimal gaming performance.
