How well can the GeForce GTX 1060 5GB run games
28 Oct 2020 - Graphics card reviewed

The GeForce GTX 1060 5GB is a high performing piece of gaming hardware, still confidently featuring in PC gamer computers. Capable of running games with up to a DirectX 12 requirement.

What FPS performance can the GeForce GTX 1060 5GB get on latest AAA 2020 games? In particular our game review looks at the FPS achieved running on Ultra graphics settings on the 1080p screen resolution as well as 1440p and 4K. We look at 1000 of the most demanding games available today and this GPU is better than the recommended graphics requirement of more than 471 games in the list.

With 1080p being the most common gaming resolution at the moment we explored how well the GeForce GTX 1060 5GB can run Mafia: Definitive Edition at 1080p and saw it return playable frame rates at the following graphics settings - Low: 67 FPS, Medium: 53 FPS, High: 36 FPS and Ultra: 26 FPS. For performance contrast we can see that Genshin Impact returns a reasonable 48 FPS at Ultra 1080p.

With PC gamers looking for larger screen sizes like 1440p we tested the GeForce GTX 1060 5GB by playing Mafia: Definitive Edition which yielded a weak performance. Its FPS results for the graphics settings are as follows - L: 51FPS, M: 40FPS, H: 27FPS, U: 19FPS. Another popular game we tested with this card was Genshin Impact and that was playable. This graphics card delivered 37 FPS at Ultra 1440p. Another popular title was Marvel's Avengers which gets playable results with a 37FPS on Ultra 1440p. Gaming at 1440p with the GeForce GTX 1060 5GB is not a bad choice for a larger screen size like this. Some games will struggle though, but with some careful graphic option adjustments in-game you can normally find a suitable visual experience with this GPU at 1440p.

How many years will the GeForce GTX 1060 5GB graphics card play newly released games and how long until you should consider upgrading the GeForce GTX 1060 5GB in your PC? 12-18 months of top end gaming is still left in this graphics card

Whats a good PC graphics upgrade for the GeForce GTX 1060 5GB? A great upgrade graphics card would be a 16 Series GeForce GTX 1660 Super 6GB, which has 30% better performance and can run 821 of the top 1000 demanding game requirements today. Alternatively if you want an upgrade suggestion for the GeForce GTX 1060 5GB then a good choice would be R-500 Series Radeon RX Vega 56 8GB as this is better than 924 of the top 1000 most demanding game requirements with 39% better performance as well.
