How well can the GeForce GTX 1660 run games
14 Nov 2019 - Graphics card reviewed

The GeForce GTX 1660 is a high performing piece of gaming hardware, still confidently featuring in PC gamer computers. Capable of running games with up to a DirectX 12 requirement.

Here we take a closer look at the various performances across 1080p, 1440p and 4K screen resolutions for the GeForce GTX 1660. In particular this is looking at the Ultra graphics settings to see what sort of FPS this graphics card can get across some of the more popular games played in 2019. 859 games can be played by this graphics card of the 1000 most demanding games being played by PC gamers today.

First we looked at 1080p resolution for the GeForce GTX 1660 performance to explore what sort of benchmarks it would achieve on the popular title Death Stranding and predict it will deliver playable frames per second across the following graphics settings - Low: 104 FPS, Medium: 82 FPS, High: 55 FPS and Ultra: 40 FPS. We proceeded to look at Red Dead Redemption 2 to see how that compared and saw that it returned a reasonable 54 FPS at Ultra 1080p.

We move on to 1440p, and predict that Death Stranding will deliver playable FPS results. Here are the graphic presets - Low: 80 FPS, Medium: 63 FPS, High: 42 FPS and Ultra: 30 FPS. Next we have Red Dead Redemption 2 running on GeForce GTX 1660 which gets L: 108FPS, M: 85FPS, H: 57FPS, U: 41FPS. And for performance contrast the popular Diablo 4 is predicted to get L: 80FPS, M: 63FPS, H: 42FPS, U: 30FPS at 1440p. In summary we feel the GeForce GTX 1660 running at 1440p is a perfectly suitable selection of hardware for theis larger screen size. If a game at 1440p struggles a bit or experiences a frame drop then you can tweak settings in game to help get it stable. This might mean lowering it to medium or low in some specific options.

How many years will the GeForce GTX 1660 graphics card play newly released games and how long until you should consider upgrading the GeForce GTX 1660 in your PC? No graphics card upgrade required for 2 to 3 years of meeting top end game system requirements

Whats a good PC graphics upgrade for the GeForce GTX 1660? If you are thinking of upgrading this graphics card then we would currently suggest the 20 Series GeForce RTX 2060 3GB GDDR5. This PC hardware upgrade performs 21% better and can run 902 of today’s 1000 most demanding PC games. Alternatively if you are thinking of upgrading this graphics card then we would currently suggest the R-500 Series Radeon RX Vega 56 8GB. This PC hardware upgrade performs 25% better and can run 961 of today’s 1000 most demanding PC games.

GeForce GTX 1660 Game Requirement Analysis

Overview

The GeForce GTX 1660 is an entry to mid-level Nvidia graphics card which launched on March 14th, 2019. The GeForce GTX 1660 is designed to compete against AMD's more affordable gaming cards such as the RX 570 and the RX 580, and replaces the outgoing GTX 1060.

Architecture

The Turing GPU architecture aims for 30-50% as much performance as the previous-gen Pascal Architecture.

GPU

It equips a GPU codenamed Turing TU116, more specifically the TU166-300-A1, which has 22 SM activated and thus 1408 Shader Processing Units, 88 TMUs, and 48 ROPs. The central unit runs at 1530 MHz and goes up to 1785 MHz with the Boost Clock.

Memory

The GPU accesses a 6GB frame buffer of fast GDDR5 through a 192-bit memory interface, while the memory clock Operates at 2001MHz, or 8GHz effective.

Power Consumption

With a rated board TDP of 120W, this graphics card requires one 8-pin power connector.

Performance

The GeForce GTX 1660 will enable medium to high graphics performance on modern AAA 2018 released games. Although there will be variations on this frame rate we expect this card to deliver around 50+ FPS on High graphics settings at 1080p screen resolution.
Comparatively, this card will have slightly faster performance than the GTX 1060.

System Suggestions

The GeForce GTX 1660 is best suited for resolutions up to and including 2560x1440, so our recommendation would be to use 1920x1080 in order to get the most out of your settings. We recommend a high-end processor such as the i5-8500 and 12GB of RAM for optimal performance.
