How well can the Radeon VII PowerColor 16GB run games
12 Jan 2020 - Graphics card reviewed

A true powerhouse, the Radeon VII PowerColor 16GB will run even the most demanding game system requirements released today. This card meets game requirements up to DirectX 12.

Here is a performance review on how capable the Radeon VII PowerColor 16GB is at running the more popular games of 2020. Specifically looking at this PC hardware’s ability to get suitable frames per second to play on Ultra game settings and what FPS it might get on 1080p, 1440p and 4K screen res. We look at 1000 of the most demanding games available today and this GPU is better than the recommended graphics requirement of more than 994 games in the list.

With 1080p being the most common gaming resolution at the moment we explored how well the Radeon VII PowerColor 16GB can run Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p and predict it will return good frame rates at the following graphics settings - Low: 165 FPS, Medium: 130 FPS, High: 88 FPS and Ultra: 63 FPS. For performance contrast we can see that Star Wars: Jedi - Fallen Order returns a good 64 FPS at Ultra 1080p.

As the PC gaming masses explore larger screen resolutions we decided to run some game checks at 1440p across a few popular games. We predict the Radeon VII PowerColor 16GB will run the upcoming game Cyberpunk 2077 to a reasonable performance level. Predictions across the graphics settings looked like this, Low: 126 FPS, Medium: 99 FPS, High: 67 FPS and Ultra: 48 FPS. Another game tested was Star Wars: Jedi - Fallen Order, L: 128FPS, M: 101FPS, H: 68FPS, U: 48FPS. And then we researched potential graphics card performance on Grand Theft Auto VI, wih estimates revealing L: 118FPS, M: 93FPS, H: 62FPS, U: 45FPS at 1440p. Gaming at 1440p with the Radeon VII PowerColor 16GB is certainly capable of running larger monitor gaming at Ultra or High graphics settings.

How many years will the Radeon VII PowerColor 16GB graphics card play newly released games and how long until you should consider upgrading the Radeon VII PowerColor 16GB in your PC? This gpu has around 2+ years of running AAA recommended system requirements before any upgrades should be considered.

Whats a good PC graphics upgrade for the Radeon VII PowerColor 16GB? A great upgrade graphics card would be a 20 Series GeForce RTX 2080 Ti Super, which has 25% better performance and can run 997 of the top 1000 demanding game requirements today.

Radeon VII PowerColor 16GB Game Requirement Analysis

Overview
The Radeon VII PowerColor 16GB is an Enthusiast Graphics Card based on the fifth (5.1) Revision of the Graphics Core Next (GCN) Architecture.

Architecture
Vega 20 XT GPU offers support for second-gen HBM2 Memory, DirectX 12.0 and Open GL 4.5.
The Vega 20 XT is the first ever 7nm gaming GPU and is the Full Variant of the GPU with 60 Compute Units activated, offering 3840 Shader Processing Units, 240 TMUs and 128 ROPs.

GPU
The Central Unit is clocked at 1400MHz with a boost clock speed of 1750MHz.

Memory: Speed
The GPU is equipped with 16GB of stacked HBM2 Memory and accesses the Frame Buffer through a 4096-bit memory interface, offering total memory bandwidth of 967.7 GB/s. HBM2 memory is clocked at 1000MHz base clock, or 2000 MHz effective speed.

Memory: Frame Buffer
The GPU can fill up a Memory Pool of up to 16GB. Under most circumstances, this only proves useful in certain 3D Games whose Settings Require Large Amounts of Memory but it makes the Radeon VII a great GPU for memory-intensive programs.
The GPU itself is aimed for 4K Gaming. The 16GB HBM2 framebuffer is enough to prevent it bottlenecking performance in any AAA title at 4K.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 295W, it requires at least a 600W PSU with two available 8-pin connectors.

Performance
The Radeon VII PowerColor 16GB is in the same region of performance as the GeForce RTX 2080, although it does lack ray-tracing support. However, the ultra-wide HBM2 memory may offer the Radeon RX Vega an advantage at higher resolutions.

System Suggestions
Radeon VII PowerColor 16GB is best suited for resolutions up to and including 3840 x2160 (4K). We recommend a Very Strong Processor and at least 16GB of RAM for Optimal Performance.
