How well can the Radeon RX 6800 16GB run games
12 Jul 2021 - Graphics card reviewed

A true powerhouse, the Radeon RX 6800 16GB will run even the most demanding game system requirements released today. Capable of running games with up to a DirectX 12 requirement.

Here is a quick game performance synopsis for the AAA games played in 2021. In particular we focus on how well the Radeon RX 6800 16GB runs at Ultra graphics settings and what frames per second it is getting at 1080p, 1440p and 4K monitor resolutions. In terms of performance against the most demanding games today this graphics card can play 998 of the 1000 most demanding PC games beating their recommended requirements.

Running at 1080p this card gets a good frame rate from Resident Evil 8 with 71 FPS on Ultra. Then we take a look at F1 2021 which returns a strong 98 FPS. Another title that we looked at is the popular Battlefield 2042 which we predict will get a strong 94 FPS.

As the PC gaming masses explore larger screen resolutions we decided to run some game checks at 1440p across a few popular games. We discovered the Radeon RX 6800 16GB ran Resident Evil 8 to a reasonable performance level. Results across the graphics settings looked like this, Low: 142 FPS, Medium: 112 FPS, High: 75 FPS and Ultra: 54 FPS. Another game tested was F1 2021, L: 196FPS, M: 155FPS, H: 104FPS, U: 74FPS. And then we researched potential graphics card performance on Battlefield 2042, wih estimates revealing L: 132FPS, M: 102FPS, H: 90FPS, U: 72FPS at 1440p. Getting popular modern games to run at 1440p on the Radeon RX 6800 16GB is easily capable of pc gaming across these screen resolutions. Turn the game settings up to Ultra at 1440p. This GPU is also capable of running a solid FPS across a lot of games at 4K resolution as well.

How many years will the Radeon RX 6800 16GB graphics card play newly released games and how long until you should consider upgrading the Radeon RX 6800 16GB in your PC? 2-3 years of top end gaming before an upgrade

Whats a good PC graphics upgrade for the Radeon RX 6800 16GB? There are no graphics cards on the current market that would provide a big enough increase in performance to warrant upgrading the Radeon RX 6800 16GB.

Radeon RX 6800 16GB Game Requirement Analysis

Overview
The Radeon RX 6800 16GB is an Enthusiast gaming Graphics Card based on the second (2.0) Revision of the RDNA Architecture.

Architecture
The Navi 21 GPU offers support for GDDR6 Memory, DirectX 12 Ultimate, Vulkan 1.2, and OpenGL 4.6.

This variant of the Navi 21 GPU features 60 Compute Units activated, offering 3840 Shader Processing Units, 240 TMUs and 96 ROPs. The GPU features a 1605 MHz base clock speed and up to 2500 MHz with boost clock. This puts its predicted performance roughly in line with the GeForce RTX 3070.

GPU
The Central Unit is clocked at 1605 MHz, rising to 2500 MHz with boost clock enabled.

Memory: Speed
The GPU is equipped with high-speed GDDR6 and accesses the Frame Buffer through a 256-bit memory interface, providing total memory bandwidth of 448 GB/s.

Memory: Frame Buffer
The GPU can fill up a Memory Pool of up to 16GB. Under most circumstances, this only proves useful in certain 3D Games whose Settings Require Large Amounts of Memory.
However, the GPU itself is aimed for 4K Gaming, In some limited scenarios, 16GB might be a bottleneck and Performance could be better were the Frame Buffer larger, however this would only be an issue in the most demanding games.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 250W, it requires at least a 650W PSU with two available 8-pin connectors.

Performance
AMD Radeon RX 6800 16GB competes with GeForce RTX 3070 8GB, which is available for $499.
Specs currently available suggest the AMD Radeon RX 6800 16GB performance should be in the same region as the GeForce RTX 3070.

System Suggestions
AMD Radeon RX 6800 16GB is best suited for resolutions up to and including 3840 x2160 (4K). For the most demanding AAA games it should be ideally suited to 4K. We recommend a Very Strong Processor and at least 16GB of RAM for Optimal Performance.
