How well can the Radeon RX 6800 XT 16GB run games
4 Apr 2021 - Graphics card reviewed

A true powerhouse, the Radeon RX 6800 XT 16GB will run even the most demanding game system requirements released today. Capable of running games with up to a DirectX 12 requirement.

What FPS performance can the Radeon RX 6800 XT 16GB get on latest AAA 2021 games? In particular our game review looks at the FPS achieved running on Ultra graphics settings on the 1080p screen resolution as well as 1440p and 4K. In terms of performance against the most demanding games today this graphics card can play 999 of the 1000 most demanding PC games beating their recommended requirements.

With 1080p being the most common gaming resolution at the moment we explored how well the Radeon RX 6800 XT 16GB can run Outriders at 1080p and saw it return strong frame rates at the following graphics settings - Low: 216 FPS, Medium: 171 FPS, High: 115 FPS and Ultra: 82 FPS. For performance contrast we can see that Grand Theft Auto VI is predicted to return a good 73 FPS at Ultra 1080p.

Increasing resolution to 1440p is something a number of PC gamers are doing today. We tested the Radeon RX 6800 XT 16GB at 1440p with Outriders, which got a good set of FPS results. These were, Low: 165 FPS, Medium: 130 FPS, High: 88 FPS and Ultra: 63 FPS. We then checked out Grand Theft Auto VI which we predict would have a set of graphics results as followed, L: 147FPS, M: 116FPS, H: 78FPS, U: 56FPS. And another popular game was Cyberpunk 2077 that returned L: 203FPS, M: 160FPS, H: 108FPS, U: 77FPS at 1440p. Getting popular modern games to run at 1440p on the Radeon RX 6800 XT 16GB is a solid performer with higher resolution modern gaming. This graphics card can also bump up to 4K gaming regularly with the latest games still being capable of high or ultra graphics settings at this level.

How many years will the Radeon RX 6800 XT 16GB graphics card play newly released games and how long until you should consider upgrading the Radeon RX 6800 XT 16GB in your PC? No graphics card upgrade required for 2 to 3 years of meeting top end game system requirements

Whats a good PC graphics upgrade for the Radeon RX 6800 XT 16GB? There are no graphics cards on the current market that would provide a big enough increase in performance to warrant upgrading the Radeon RX 6800 XT 16GB.

Radeon RX 6800 XT 16GB Game Requirement Analysis

The Radeon RX 6800 XT 16GB is an Enthusiast gaming Graphics Card based on the second (2.0) Revision of the RDNA Architecture.

The Navi 21 GPU offers support for GDDR6 Memory, DirectX 12 Ultimate, Vulkan 1.2, and OpenGL 6.5.

This variant of the Navi 21 GPU features 72 Compute Units activated, offering 4608 Shader Processing Units, 288 TMUs and 128 ROPs. The GPU features a 1825 MHz base clock speed and up to 2250 MHz with boost clock. This puts its predicted performance roughly in line with the GeForce RTX 3080.

The Central Unit is clocked at 1825 MHz, rising to 2250 MHz with boost clock enabled.

Memory: Speed
The GPU is equipped with high-speed GDDR6 and accesses the Frame Buffer through a 256-bit memory interface, providing total memory bandwidth of 512 GB/s.

Memory: Frame Buffer
The GPU can fill up a Memory Pool of up to 16GB. Under most circumstances, this only proves useful in certain 3D Games whose Settings Require Large Amounts of Memory.
However, the GPU itself is aimed for 4K Gaming, In some limited scenarios, 16GB might be a bottleneck and Performance could be better were the Frame Buffer larger, however this would only be an issue in the most demanding games.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 300W, it requires at least a 700W PSU with two available 8-pin connectors.

AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT 16GB competes with GeForce RTX 3080 8GB, which is available for $699.
Specs currently available suggest the AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT 16GB performance should be in the same region as the GeForce RTX 3080.

System Suggestions
AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT 16GB is best suited for resolutions up to and including 3840 x2160 (4K). For the most demanding AAA games it should be ideally suited to 4K. We recommend a Very Strong Processor and at least 16GB of RAM for Optimal Performance.
