26 Jan 2020 - Graphics card reviewed

A mid to low level graphics card, the Radeon HD 7970M is found in budget machines nowadays, struggling to meet AAA system requirements. Capable of running games with up to a DirectX 11 requirement.

How many years will the Radeon HD 7970M graphics card play newly released games and how long until you should consider upgrading the Radeon HD 7970M in your PC? You should definitely consider replacing this Radeon HD 7970M graphics card, if it is still in your gaming PC.

Whats a good PC graphics upgrade for the Radeon HD 7970M? Upgrading this graphics card would have us consider the 20 Series GeForce RTX 2070 Mobile which is 268% more powerful. This upgrade choice can also run 981 games from the most demanding games today. Alternatively we would suggest getting a RX 5000 Series Radeon RX 5500M 8GB, as it can run 534 of the top 1000 demanding game requirements today with 129% increased graphics performance.

Radeon HD 7970M Game Requirement Analysis

Overview
Radeon HD 7970M is a High-End Mobile Graphics Card based on the First revision of the GCN Architecture.

Architecture
The GCN Architecture succeeds the 40nm Terascale Architecture. In addition to being produced with a 28nm Technology, the GCN Architecture adds other Technologies that allow for energy efficiency. For example, ZeroCore Power, a long idle power saving technology, allows the Graphics Cards to shut down by itself when the Monitor is turned off.
GCN also adds Improved Anisotropic Filtering, DirectX 11 Tessellation and the Partially Resident Textures (PRT) Technology, which enables future games to utilize ultra-high resolution textures with the same performance as today's small and often repetitive textures.

GPU
It equips a GPU codenamed Wimbledon XT which has 20 Compute Units activated and thus offers 1280 Shader Processing Units, 80 TMUs and 32 ROPs. The Central Unit Operates at 850MHz.

Memory
The GPU accesses a 2GB frame buffer of fast GDDR5, through a 256-bit memory interface. The size of the frame buffer is adequate. The memory clock operates at 1200MHz.

Features
DirectX 11.0 Support (11.0 Hardware Default) and support for Crossfire, PowerTune Technology, Eyefinity, App Acceleration, HD3D, ZeroCore Power and other technologies.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 100W, it is suited for very large laptops only.

Performance
Gaming benchmarks put its on average with NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 680M.

System Suggestions
We recommend a Powerful Processor (Intel Core i7 Mobile) and 8GB of RAM for a system with Radeon HD 7970M.

Most modern demanding games will run at Ultra settings, some other CPU intensive games might need running at High settings because of your processor :)

GCN is the architecture, Pitcairn XT is the "GPU" :D
This should be GCN: Pitcairn XT
Just like Kepler GK107, for example.

Lol. But it writes "architecture : Pitcairn XT" I remember some time ago it was writen here GCN and today I looked again and saw this strange "Pitcairn XT". I agree with full details. "GK107, GCN: Pitcairn XT" would be nice.

I have a GT 650m in SLI mode…………. now, I haven't really used Nvidia's OC tool, forgot what it is called, but should I get a 7970M? It says it's only a 45% bonus if I get the 7970m, or should I just say F it, and get a 680m?

the GTX 680m is about €220,- more expensive here and it doesn't add a big difference so the 7970 wins for sure. however 2x GT 650m is good enough for decent fps on most of the games…

I get 45 fps on far cry 3 with high settings so you would get great fps on that… but Crysis i'm not sure, but i guess you should have smooth fps on medium and you may get a little bit of lagg when playing on high.
