As one of the Few people still using this cpu, it became a huge bottleneck over time, It's definitively time for a upgrade, I advise everyone who has this cpu to do the same unless they plan to play games Prior 2010.

Note: With my current build I am able to run NFS MW 2012 On Medium at around 30 fps.

It is not an AM2 socket, It's 939, as it has 939 pins and if you attempted to plug this into a AM2 board, say good bye to your CPU.

I believe it is Socket AM2.
The AMD Athlon 64 4200+ x2 was available for both Socket 939 and Socket AM2.
All models listed below use the same core clockrate and HT clockrates.
S939:
Manchester (90 nm, 89W)
Toledo (90 nm, 89W)
AM2:
Windsor (90 nm, 89W or 65W EE)
Brisbane (65nm, 65W).

jerryyet,
In most cases you can upgrade, but you still need to consider the following:
1. Check your board's CPU support section to be 100% sure. You may need a BIOS update. There may also be better CPU options available (Athlon II, etc).
2. There's two versions of the 6000+ x2: 89W and 125W TDP (hot!). Check your PSU and cooling.
4. The AM2 4200+ x2 tends to overclock well (both 89W and 65W). As always, do some research beforehand: board features, memory spec, PSU and CPU/case cooling are important considerations. The 'AMD Overclocking Database' is a useful resource :)

It's entirely possible to play Planetside 2 with one of these, but your FPS will suffer horribly even if you have a kickass video card. If you can't swing a new CPU+motherboard+RAM to keep up with modern games, I wholeheartedly recommend an aftermarket cooler and overclocking. Mine's stable at 2.699GHz, an increase of around 25% over the base clock speed, and hasn't gone over 53C even once.

Great CPU, runs a lot of modern games. I can confirm Skyrim runs as well. I haven't found a game yet that this CPU is unable to run at all.
