Asus Strix 2.0 Review

The STRIX 2.0 is ASUS’ latest gaming headset, featuring 60mm drivers, boom microphone and in-line microphone.

Design

The design of the STRIX 2.0 is quite unlike any other gaming headset I have seen. The headset is quite large and comes in at 320g, and yet despite it weighing in this much they are comfortable to wear for long periods of time. This is partly due to the soft padding that is on the part of the headset that actually rests on your head, and I have to say, it is extremely comfortable and makes the STRIX 2.0 seem weightless.

The ear cups are also extremely comfortable, I think ASUS have done a great job on the padding on this headset. It also helps that this is an over-ear headset which means that your ears won’t be hurting from the headset resting on your ears for so long and also helps you to become immersed into your game or the music you are listening to.
Another great design feature of this headset is the braided cable, it may not seem like much but I think a braided cable is a lot nicer than a plastic or rubber one. The cable being braided helps it not to become tangled as easily and it also just looks a lot better. Along the cable you’ll find your microphone mute switch, your volume control wheel and an in-built microphone, but I’ll talk about the quality of that later.

The portability of the headset isn’t amazing as they cannot be folded to reduce space, but you can tilt the ear cups so they will sit flat for when you take them around with you.

Accessories

The STRIX 2.0 comes with a couple of accessories to make sure your new headset will work with most products on the market. One of them being a splitter cable: I found myself using the splitter cable with my computer on the microphone in and headphone out ports. This essentially means that you’re not stuck if your device cannot do microphone in and headphone out through the same port. The STRIX 2.0 also comes with a compatibility cable, which does exactly what it says – it makes the headset compatible with older mobile devices.

Sound Quality

The sound quality is very good on the STRIX 2.0, with strong bass and decent trebles too. It sports large 60mm drivers which are all making this happen. The STRIX 2.0 is great for things such as Skype because voices sound good and clear as well as listening to music because the sound quality is very good. Sounds were also good on games such as Grand Theft Auto V on PC and there was a sense of sounds coming from different directions, not just left and right, despite these headphones not being branded as surround headphones. Everything sounds truly immersive, which I what I look for in a decent pair of headphones or a headset.

Microphone Quality

The inbuilt microphone on the headset isn’t amazing, it sounded muffled and too quiet to use all the time and I certainly would not choose it as my main microphone.

On the other hand, the boom microphone is a decent sounding microphone for the headset, it picks up my voice well and you can position it in a specific way so it does not get in the way. Another bonus of the boom microphone, is that you can remove the microphone for when you aren’t using it. One fault that I did pick up, and my friends on Skype did too, was that the boom does pick up the “pops” when I say certain words, but this was easily solved by moving the microphone from directly infront of my mouth.

Conclusion
The STRIX 2.0 is a great headset that provides great audio quality for both games and music listening, at an affordable cost.
