The Dell XPS 15 (2020) i7-10875H GTX 1650 Ti Mobile 16GB RAM 512GB M.2 laptop review we are going to do today will look into how its purchase price stacks up against the performance on offer from the hardware housed inside it. We will also be taking a look at today’s more demanding games to see some Dell XPS 15 (2020) i7-10875H GTX 1650 Ti Mobile 16GB RAM 512GB M.2 laptop gaming frame rates to help you judge if the value to money ratio is a good deal or not.
Is the Dell XPS 15 (2020) i7-10875H GTX 1650 Ti Mobile 16GB RAM 512GB M.2 good as a gaming laptop? Not for gaming
Processor - This processor is an excellent 2021 hardware component for running modern AAA games. Games are beginning to lean on more CPU cores for extra processing. Fortunately this CPU has 8 cores, making it an excellent gamers processor choice.
Graphics Card - The GeForce GTX 1650 Ti Mobile is not for modern gaming. Perhaps some modern indie games might run on it. The 4GB VRAM in this graphics solution is just OK. There are games that could do with a lot more VRAM than this.
System Memory - A laptop with 16GB of system memory, like this laptop, makes it an excellent amount of RAM for the AAA gaming needs of 2021 and into the future.
Screen Size - This laptop screen (15.6") in 2021 offers up a good amount of gaming screen real estate for gamers on the move, while keeping the physical laptop footprint portable. In games the physical size of the screen can help with being able to read in game menus without squinting. Look for 17 inch laptops, if you want a gaming laptop with a suitable viewing area. But the larger laptop means you compromise on portability.
Refresh Rate - If you want your gaming laptop to push past 60FPS, then make sure your laptop display panel has a higher refresh rate than 60Hz. Not all laptop manufacturers clearly state the screen refresh rate. If it is not clear, assume it is 60Hz. The laptop only turn out FPS (frames per second) as high as its screens refresh rate. 60hz refresh rate gets a max of 60FPS in all games, regardless of the hardware’s power in your laptop. Refresh rates are tied to the laptop’s screen. This laptop has an ok refresh rate for modern gaming but at 60Hz it could restrict FPS if the laptop was capable of delivering more than the refresh rate.
No two laptops are the same. But one of the primary gaming laptop components is of course the graphics card. Often a slightly weaker mobile solution, when compared to its desktop equivalent. Today we will consider this laptop's hardware, when running modern popular and sometimes demanding games, like Far Cry 6, Battlefield 2042 and Halo Infinite Multiplayer which will help us know if this mobile graphics card and the overall laptop hardware is considered a good price to performance point. We consider it running these titles at its native 1080p resolution, and at Ultra video settings. With the GeForce GTX 1650 Ti Mobile inside this laptop, this graphics card solution will be capable of meeting 323 games at their minimum system requirements and 0 games at their recommended system requirements of the top 500 most demanding games around today.
If we want to look at the gaming value offered by the Dell XPS 15 (2020) i7-10875H GTX 1650 Ti Mobile 16GB RAM 512GB M.2 laptop compared tto other gaming laptops, we focus on the performance ability of the hardware and then the relative price of the laptop. Of course a laptop is often more than just its core tech components, like CPU and GPU, but for this exercise we want a standardised way of looking across laptops to see what value they have to today’s laptop gamer. So we consider $ of each laptop and its core hardware capability in running modern games.
We currently give the Dell XPS 15 (2020) i7-10875H GTX 1650 Ti Mobile 16GB RAM 512GB M.2 laptop a 8 out of 10 for its P2P score. Where the higher the better rating. As mentioned the figure will adjust as new hardware is released and performance expectations shift over time. This XPS 15 (2020) configuration is placed at 2nd position, when we order the range by their price to performance ratings. Those getting closer to the 1st position in this list will be better gaming laptops for their price.

Now the processing power is one of the primary areas that we will pay for in any PC and so let's see how our XPS 15 (2020) laptop is when compared against CPU performance with a top CPU focused laptop thats available today. So the laptop we have chosen for its CPU performance is the ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 17 G733 (2021) R9 5900HX RTX 3080 8GB Max-Q 64GB RAM 2.0TB M.2 1080p 165Hz, which comes with a Ryzen 9 5900HX 8-Core 3.3GHz processor. That processor performs 28% better compared to our review laptop’s Core i7-10875H 8-Core 2.30GHz.
A snapshot today of performance for our processor, we can currently see it beating 485 of the 500 most demanding games available right now. This is considering their recommended system requirements. For a the top 500 Minimum system specs this is 500 games.
But the real test is seeing how well the laptop CPU performs against today's popular games. Our Core i7-10875H 8-Core 2.30GHz compared against recommended processor requirements for Far Cry 6 delivers 26% better performance while against Battlefield 2042 it’s 26% better and finally compared to Halo Infinite Multiplayer it has a performance difference : 27% better.
One of the most important focuses of a gaming PC is the graphics card and our review laptop is certainly no different. As such we will want to know how well our XPS 15 (2020) laptop performs in the graphical visuals area compared to what is available on the current laptop market. A great way to consider this is by putting it into a comparison against a well priced laptop that has the most powerful laptop GPU around at the moment, and then we can review its performance against that top graphics card laptop. We have the Dell Alienware M17 R4 (2021) i9-10980HK RTX 3080 16GB Mobile 32GB RAM 512GB M.2 1080p 144Hz as one of today’s best graphics crunching laptop. It comes with a GeForce RTX 3080 16GB Mobile video card in it, which currently has 126% better performance compared to our laptop’s GeForce GTX 1650 Ti Mobile.
The GeForce GTX 1650 Ti Mobile Graphics Card found in this machine can currently run 0 games of the top 500 most demanding games right now. This is basically how many recommended game system requirements our laptop GPU beats in performance today, but we will update this figure as new games come out. This is 323 games when looking at beating minimum system requirements.
Today’s games are getting more demanding so let's see how our gaming laptop performs against their recommended gpu system requirements. First off we have the Battlefield 2042 which currently our GeForce GTX 1650 Ti Mobile is 54% worse next let's see how well it runs against Halo Infinite Multiplayer. We can see it is 54% worse. Ok finally lets see it against Far Cry 6. Here our laptop is 88% worse.
With a 1080p native screen panel our Dell XPS 15 (2020) i7-10875H GTX 1650 Ti Mobile 16GB RAM 512GB M.2 has a 15.6" physical screen size. This inch panel size is measured starting in one corner, say the top corner and then across the middle of the screen down to the bottom corner on the other side. And in our case it has a fixed number of pixels in that screen that are 1920 pixels wide by 1080 pixels tall, or 1080p resolution. A 4K panel laptop is often restricted to 60Hz. This means that even if you did have the hardware inside your laptop to run a game at 4K, you wouldnt be able to get more than 60 FPS. Most laptop hardware, and desktop hardware for that matter, is not capable of 4K ultra graphics on modern games. We can see 60Hz panel refresh rate versions of this laptop are available. The higher the better.
Dropping a game’s screen resolution down below the native 4K resolution to 1080p or 1440p, would possibly deliver the much needed FPS for stable modern AAA gaming. Down scaling that native resolution comes at a price, though. As soon as you step away from the native resolution of any monitor/ panel it lowers the clean definition of a game as the physical number of screen pixels don't match those being sent by the game. The game starts to look blurry. If the following is the case, where the 1080p gaming laptop could run games you love at a higher 4K resolution then you could always hook up the PC laptop to a desktop monitor. One that was much bigger than the laptop screen size, like a 31inch with 144Hz refresh rate to enjoy 1440p or 4K resolution when gaming at home. Then still have your laptop for mobile gaming as well.
Possibly a suitable purpose for a 4K laptop would be if you were keen to watch 4K streaming services like Netflix. At which point perhaps it's enough of a selling point for you to consider a 4K laptop?
As you can probably gather from the information above, its probably not worth the extra cash for a 4K laptop if gaming is your Laptop purpose. 1080p is likely plenty and has enough alternative gaming options for when you want better resolution. It feels like you might not get what you were after if you picked up a shiny new 4K laptop, then was needing to lower game resolution, while getting blurry in-game experience and achieving a max 60FPS when you could push the hardware into better frame rates.
Today’s best priced 1440p gaming monitor, to work nicely with our Dell XPS 15 (2020) i7-10875H GTX 1650 Ti Mobile 16GB RAM 512GB M.2, would be the ASUS ProArt Display PA278QV 27 inch 1440p 75Hz 5ms IPS, which is priced at $299.99 and has a refresh rate of 75Hz. The suggested 1440p monitor price tracker recorded on 9th Mar 2021, where it reached the low cost price of $229.99.
Asus Predator XB273K 27 inch 4K GSYNC IPS 1ms 144Hz is a good value, high performing desktop display that might work well with this laptop. It's currently priced up at $629.99 and also has a 144Hz refresh rate. During these recent weeks we have price tracked this 4k monitor and noticed that it has increased its price by $580, so keep an eye out for deals, as this great value monitor might still be found for cheaper. To give a bit more info about this monitor we saw it cost its lowest of $549.99, which we recorded on 13th Nov 2020.
[Note - check that monitor display connectors are compatible between a monitor and a laptop before purchase]
However, you could be after watching 4K streaming content on your laptop, while on the move. Then perhaps the 17inch laptop screen and 4K resolution is going to net a more enjoyable experience than a 1080p alternative.
For now in the laptop space, it looks best to stick with 1080p panels. This way your laptop’s physical size remains practical and portable, 17inch laptops are plenty big enough. And at the moment you will still have to lower game resolutions down from 4K, on the bigger hitting AAA titles, that would then get playable, but sub par visuals and you would still hit the 60FPS cap if your hardware could go beyond 60FPS.
