Gaming Laptop Analysis
Is the Lenovo Legion 5i 15 i7-9750H GTX 1650 Mobile 24GB RAM 512GB M.2 good as a gaming laptop? Not for gaming
Processor - This laptop has an excellent processor in it for meeting modern AAA CPU requirements during 2021 gaming. Games are beginning to lean on more CPU cores for extra processing. Fortunately this CPU has 6 cores, making it an excellent gamers processor choice.
Graphics Card - This laptop’s GeForce GTX 1650 Mobile graphics solution is not up to modern 2021 AAA gaming. Modern AAA games can make use of more than the 4GB VRAM available in this graphics solution. It has an OK amount of VRAM but could struggle moving into the coming year..
System Memory - Our review laptop here has an excellent quantity of RAM for 2021 AAA games. The 24GB of RAM will meet the game requirements of the foreseeable future as well.
Screen Size - The screen on this laptop is certainly a good option for game releases in 2021, but there is room for better, should your budget allow. But sometimes larger than this 15.6" is too big and this is definitely a good, portable option for some gamers. We normally choose a 17 inch laptop for gamer screen size. This larger sort of panel would help show menus in-game and game text more clearly.
Refresh Rate - The higher the screen panel refresh rate, the better for gaming laptops. The refresh rate is the number of times a second the screen is capable of refreshing the game’s image. If a laptop can deliver 100 frames per second (FPS) in a game and your laptop has a 60Hz refresh rate, then you will only get a max of 60 frames per second. The higher the refresh rate and the game’s FPS the smoother the sharpness is as the screen view moves around in game. You can get this laptop with 60Hz refresh rate which, for gaming, is an ok refresh rate.

How does the Lenovo Legion 5i 15 i7-9750H GTX 1650 Mobile 24GB RAM 512GB M.2 laptop compare to the best graphics card performance focused laptops and today’s most popular games?
You will likely be considering buying a graphics and pixel crunching laptop perhaps to meet the latest and future game requirements. We will therefore be wondering how our Legion 5i 15 review laptop competes against other GPU centric laptops in the gaming laptop market. To give us a bit of insight we will compare our laptop with a leading GPU performance laptop and see how its graphics capability performs against it. Lets look at the MSI GT76 Titan i9-10900K RTX 2080 Super 64GB RAM 2.0TB M.2 4K laptop due to its graphics processing power. The GPU it houses is ideal for comparison benchmarking, because it currently has one of the best laptop graphics solutions, at the cheapest laptop price. Its GPU is the GeForce RTX 2080 Super 8GB which we compare to the GeForce GTX 1650 Mobile graphics card in our review laptop. Our performance comparison shows the top end laptop GPU to be 157% better in performance compared to our laptop’s graphics processing power.
Interestingly we can see 0 games recommended system requirements are lower in performance than our laptop’s GPU performance capability. This is when we look at the top 500 most demanding games around today. For minimum system requirements in this same area the number is 263 games are worse than our GPU performance, again looking at the top 500 most demanding minimum system requirements.
How about we compare our laptop graphics performance against Farming Simulator 22 recommended graphics requirement? Our laptop gets 28% worse performance. Next let's check the top game of the moment, Battlefield 2042, which shows the review laptop’s gpu against that game’s system specs gets 56% worse performance. We also see the 45% worse performance from our laptop gpu when looking at the game Forza Horizon 5 for it’s graphics requirements.
The Lenovo Legion 5i 15 i7-9750H GTX 1650 Mobile 24GB RAM 512GB M.2 has a 1080p screen resolution, should I get a 4K resolution gaming laptop instead?
A common thing to explore is, what is the best gaming laptop screen resolution at the moment, as our review laptop is a 1080p. This laptop also has a 15.6" physical screen size (that's measured from a top corner to the bottom corner on the other side of the screen) and is 1920 pixels wide by 1080 pixels tall resolution. 4K laptops have a 60Hz screen refresh rate normally, that means a game would not be able to run at more than 60 frames per second even if the hardware could deliver more. While 60FPS would provide acceptable stability, a lot of gamers would prefer higher FPS than this. However, thats not the only issue here. Modern AAA game system requirements would need more powerful gaming hardware than is normally found in laptops, to play reliably at 4K Ultra graphics settings, even at 60FPS. A higher refresh rate is better and this Lenovo Legion 5i 15 i7-9750H GTX 1650 Mobile 24GB RAM 512GB M.2 variant is available with 60Hz versions.
So more likely, you will have to lower the screen resolution on your 4K laptop to 1080p or 1440p to run modern AAA games at a frame rate that doesnt stutter. By lowering the pixel count, your game will start to look blurry, as you move away from your laptop monitor’s native resolution in order to get more frames per second. Which immediately defeats the purpose of getting a 4K laptop monitor for gaming. If your laptop has hardware to deliver 4K you dont need the laptop to have a 4K display to enjoy modern gaming in this way. Just plug your laptop into a 4K desktop monitor, that will likely not have the 60Hz of most 4K laptop panels.
Maybe you are hoping to enjoy your 4K streamed movies and TV shows while on the move. And if you have access to this 4K content and it's your prime use for your new laptop then perhaps it's worth considering a 4K panel, rather than this 1080p.
As you can probably gather from the information above, its probably not worth the extra cash for a 4K laptop if gaming is your Laptop purpose. 1080p is likely plenty and has enough alternative gaming options for when you want better resolution. It feels like you might not get what you were after if you picked up a shiny new 4K laptop, then was needing to lower game resolution, while getting blurry in-game experience and achieving a max 60FPS when you could push the hardware into better frame rates.
Today’s best 1440p desktop monitor for a laptop is - ASUS ProArt Display PA278QV 27 inch 1440p 75Hz 5ms IPS
The 1440p gaming monitor that has a great price today and should be a nice accompaniment to the Lenovo Legion 5i 15 i7-9750H GTX 1650 Mobile 24GB RAM 512GB M.2 laptop is the ASUS ProArt Display PA278QV 27 inch 1440p 75Hz 5ms IPS. Its current price is $311.99 and it has a 75Hz refresh rate. We like to review tracked prices for our suggested hardware and this 1440p monitor is no different. Today’s best 4K desktop monitor for a laptop is - Asus Predator XB273K 27 inch 4K GSYNC IPS 1ms 144Hz
Today’s most competitive 4K gaming monitor by price is Asus Predator XB273K 27 inch 4K GSYNC IPS 1ms 144Hz and could work well with the Lenovo Legion 5i 15 i7-9750H GTX 1650 Mobile 24GB RAM 512GB M.2 laptop. [Note - check that monitor display connectors are compatible between a monitor and a laptop before purchase]
Possibly a suitable purpose for a 4K laptop would be if you were keen to watch 4K streaming services like Netflix. At which point perhaps it's enough of a selling point for you to consider a 4K laptop?
Paying extra for 4K gaming in a laptop is not really a good investment of your cash at the moment. We would put our extra cash in to a 1080p with better graphics card or maybe a nice mouse or headset. Because with the 4K laptop you may be sad when having to drop your favourite modern games screen resolution to get an ok frame rate. Or perhaps lowering the graphics setting to increase 4K FPS up to a stable and playable amount, only to hit a 60FPS ceiling due to the 60Hz 4K panel limit.
