If you are looking for the best priced gaming laptop and was wondering how well the Dell XPS 13 (2020) i7-1065G7 16GB RAM 1.0TB M.2 can run today’s latest games, then you are in the right place. We will be focusing this review on exploring how the Dell XPS 13 (2020) i7-1065G7 16GB RAM 1.0TB M.2 performs against the most demanding games around and really getting a better understanding of this laptop’s price to performance today.
Is the Dell XPS 13 (2020) i7-1065G7 16GB RAM 1.0TB M.2 good as a gaming laptop? Not for gaming
Processor - This laptop CPU struggles with the 2020 releases. It will not meet modern requirements of games and it is a poor choice for gamers today. This CPU has 4 cores, which is a good number for modern games.
Graphics Card - The G7 1100MHz is not for modern gaming. Perhaps some modern indie games might run on it. With such a low amount of VRAM available to this graphics solution, this makes this laptop not a suitable gamers choice for modern gaming.
System Memory - This system memory, 16GB, is excellent for meeting 2020 AAA game requirements.
Screen Size - This laptop screen is just about big enough for most modern games in 2020, but it is a little on the small size for a gamer laptop. This makes it an OK laptop choice for gamers, but we would certainly recommend larger screens for the more discerning gamer. Look for 17 inch laptops, if you want a gaming laptop with a suitable viewing area. But the larger laptop means you compromise on portability.
Refresh Rate - If you are focused on a gaming laptop then ideally you want a refresh rate of 120Hz or 144Hz or more. A lot of laptops come with 60Hz and this will stop your games being able to run in more than 60 Frames per second. Even if you hardware is capable of far more frames per second. As far as refresh rates go, this laptop can be picked up with a 60Hz screen. When looking into modern gaming laptops this would be ok, but you would consider higher panel rates if you want to enjoy top frames per second..
Getting the right graphics card for this mobile gaming machine will be one of our key focuses. As we know it can be tricky to break this down, but we will be looking at how this laptop hardware can run across demanding and popular modern games and therefore how well the price of the machine stacks up against other gaming laptops. A few of the modern demanding or popular games we will be looking at will be, Cyberpunk 2077, Watch Dogs Legion and Assassins Creed: Valhalla. Seeing how these games run on the laptops native 1080p resolution at ultra will certainly give us something tangible to consider and compare from. A good way of considering performance of this mobile graphics card is by seeing how many of today's 500 most demanding games can be run at recommended graphics settings by the G7 1100MHz found in this laptop. We can also then look at the weaker minimum requirement to see how many this laptop card can run of them, and it is 0 games at their min specs and then 0 games can be run at recommended graphics requirements.
During our research for the next best gaming laptop purchase we decided to compare Dell XPS 13 (2020) i7-1065G7 16GB RAM 1.0TB M.2 will compare across all permutations of the XPS 13 (2020) model range. This will give us a good sense of how well it sits in terms of cost to performance within its own lineup, and will better help us decide if this laptop represents good value to us today.
Our price and performance review leads us to allocate all laptops a P2P rating out of 10, which is relative to all laptops for comparison purposes and gets adjusted over time as the prices for hardware adjust and new more capable hardware is created. This laptop is currently given a 0 for P2P out of 10. As not all laptops and their prices are of course valued equally we can see that this version of the XPS 13 (2020) laptop is in 6th position on the best Price to Performance value rating. Those closer to 1st place are simply better gaming laptop options regarding the gaming performance they deliver for their price.

To get a good comparison when considering how well this laptop performs in terms of processing power, we will compare it to today’s most powerful CPU focused laptop. This will at least show us what other sorts of processor-centric laptops exist and give us a relative point of laptop processor cost comparison. A suitable comparison laptop that is CPU focused is the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 R9 4900HS RTX 2060 Mobile 16GB RAM 1.0TB M.2 1440p. This represents one of the laptops for the current cheapest price with the most powerful CPUs in it today. It has the Ryzen 9 4900HS 8-Core 3.0GHz processor tucked inside it which can deliver 140% better performance when compared to our CPU, Core i7-1065G7 4-Core 1.30GHz which is found in this review laptop.
A quick review of the number of games our laptop processor can run at recommended requirements is 0, taken from the top 500 most demanding games today. For min cpu specs this figure for number of games it can run is 288.
Some of the most popular games today are really the primary benchmark for any laptop’s ability, so we thought we should compare our laptop CPU Core i7-1065G7 4-Core 1.30GHz against Cyberpunk 2077. This CPU performance comparison saw our laptop deliver 27% worse performance against the game’s recommended CPU system requirements. Then we have Watch Dogs Legion and our laptop was 27% worse in processor performance and another popular title today is Assassins Creed: Valhalla which we saw our review laptop get 27% worse compared to our laptop cpu.
Wondering how strong this laptop is in the GPU department, then let's have a look at it compared to one of the current best GPU performing laptops available today and this should show us the relative graphics performance of our review model. We have chosen this next laptop for its GPU power, which is the MSI GT76 Titan i9-10900K RTX 2080 64GB RAM 2.0TB M.2 4K, and comes packing a GeForce RTX 2080 Super 8GB video card. That graphics card performs 581% better when compared to our review laptop’s G7 1100MHz.
Our laptop’s GPU can currently run 0 of today’s top 500 demanding games meeting their recommended Graphics Card requirements. This figure is 0 for the top 500 minimum requirement games that can be run by the G7 1100MHz.
But the real test is seeing how well the laptop GPU performs against today's popular games. Our G7 1100MHz compared against recommended graphics requirements for Cyberpunk 2077 delivers 100% better performance while against Watch Dogs Legion it’s 100% better and finally compared to Assassins Creed: Valhalla it has a performance difference : 100% better.
If you are looking for future proof laptops it doesnt take long before people are exploring the 4K panel laptops, but are they really the right choice or should you be focusing on a top end laptop that has the hardware to deliver 1080p gaming. The Dell XPS 13 (2020) i7-1065G7 16GB RAM 1.0TB M.2’s 13.4" physical panel produces a native 1920 pixels wide by 1080 pixels tall. Screen refresh rate on a 4K panel laptop will normally be 60Hz and this will cap out any game’s Frames Per Second at 60 even if it’s hardware could deliver more FPS. Along with that upset most AAA games would struggle to reach that 60 FPS at 4K Ultra graphics settings on most laptop hardware today. This particular laptop refresh rate options are 60Hz.
Drop the 4K screen resolution on your AAA games to 1080p to increase the games frame rate to something more playable, and in doing so will make a game look blurry as it wouldn't be displayed in the 4K laptop’s native resolution. And so is there a point in getting a 4K screen laptop at the moment? If your 1080p laptop has the hardware to run today’s AAA games comfortably at 4K, then plug your laptop into your desktop 4K monitor, when you are at home for some serious gaming sessions. As that desktop monitor probably isn't 60Hz restricted and is physically larger than the relatively small 17inch laptop screen size. We do just that here, with a 27inch 144Hz Nvidia GSync 1440p desktop monitor and an Alienware 51M laptop sporting a desktop RTX 2080.
The primary use we can think of is for streaming 4K movie and TV content, assuming you have access to these services. If this is your primary use for the laptop, rather than gaming then it certainly might be worth considering this.
As you can probably gather from the information above, its probably not worth the extra cash for a 4K laptop if gaming is your Laptop purpose. 1080p is likely plenty and has enough alternative gaming options for when you want better resolution. It feels like you might not get what you were after if you picked up a shiny new 4K laptop, then was needing to lower game resolution, while getting blurry in-game experience and achieving a max 60FPS when you could push the hardware into better frame rates.
An example of a well priced 1440p desktop monitor would be the ASUS ProArt Display PA278QV 27 inch 1440p 75Hz 5ms IPS, which has 75Hz and is currently available for $294.99. Our cheapest tracked price for the desktop 1440p monitor was $272.99, which we recorded on 5th Aug 2020.
Here is a 4K monitor to compliment any laptop - Asus Predator XB273K 27 inch 4K GSYNC IPS 1ms 144Hz. We watch a handful and it is currently the best priced at $829.99. It has a 144Hz refresh rate as well. During these past 2 weeks, this 4K monitor’s price has gone up by $799. Helping us to round out our information for this 4k monitor we can see it reached a low price on 11th Aug 2020, we noted the low price at $797.05.
[Note - check that monitor display connectors are compatible between a monitor and a laptop before purchase]
If you are looking to view 4K streaming content, while keeping yourself mobile with your laptop, then maybe a 4K resolution panel would be a better experience than the normal 1080p. In general, we think it's probably not worth the extra money for any visual gains you might not spot, without a direct comparison, especially if you are thinking to game on your laptop as well.
Perhaps in the future the 4K gaming laptop would make sense but for now certainly move forward on the 1080p laptop over the 4K options. This way your new laptop remains, well mobile and built for purpose. Picking up a 4K laptop for gaming should be a great choice but at the moment you would sadly be turning down the display quality by dropping resolution or game settings to get the game to deliver more FPS, and even then the 4K panel will likely be capped at 60FPS due to the hertz refresh rate it often comes with.
