Our Dell G5 15 (2020) i5-10300H GTX 1650 Ti Mobile 8GB RAM 256GB M.2 laptop review today is going to help us understand how well the hardware components in this machine can run today’s modern games. Taking a look at some of the most demanding popular titles we will see some expected frame rates for the Dell G5 15 (2020) i5-10300H GTX 1650 Ti Mobile 8GB RAM 256GB M.2 laptop and understand the type of price to performance on offer.
Is the Dell G5 15 (2020) i5-10300H GTX 1650 Ti Mobile 8GB RAM 256GB M.2 good as a gaming laptop? Not for gaming
Processor - The Core i5-10300H 4-Core 2.50GHz processor is an OK 2020 CPU, but shortly it will run into issues as new games are released next year. Perhaps a number of Indy titles and casual games will still run ok for the time being. CPU cores in modern gaming are being utilised more and more by the AAA releases. This CPU has 4 cores, which is certainly a good number of cores.
Graphics Card - This laptop’s GeForce GTX 1650 Ti Mobile graphics solution is not up to modern 2020 AAA gaming. Modern AAA games can make use of more than the 4GB VRAM available in this graphics solution. It has an OK amount of VRAM but could struggle moving into the coming year..
System Memory - This laptop’s 8GB of RAM is certainly a good quantity, when running AAA games in 2020.
Screen Size - This laptop comes with a good screen size (15.6") which is certainly capable of viewing and playing 2020 titles. Larger screens can offer better in-game views, as often game HUDs and menus can take up a fair amount of a smaller laptop screen space and leave you squinting at the detail or text. You could go larger, of course, but then the larger you go the less portable a laptop becomes. For gaming laptops that are still portable, we would go for 17 inch gaming laptops.
Refresh Rate - The higher the screen panel refresh rate, the better for gaming laptops. The refresh rate is the number of times a second the screen is capable of refreshing the game’s image. If a laptop can deliver 100 frames per second (FPS) in a game and your laptop has a 60Hz refresh rate, then you will only get a max of 60 frames per second. The higher the refresh rate and the game’s FPS the smoother the sharpness is as the screen view moves around in game. Refresh rates are tied to the laptop’s screen. This laptop has an ok refresh rate for modern gaming but at 60Hz it could restrict FPS if the laptop was capable of delivering more than the refresh rate.
A key choice in any gaming laptop is making sure we identify the right graphics card in the laptop and know what it is capable of in today's gaming landscape. With this laptop we are taking a closer look at how its total laptop value compares to its capability when it comes to running modern demanding games. Also lets take a look at it when running modern popular games like, Cyberpunk 2077 or Assassins Creed: Valhalla in ultra graphics settings on its native screen resolution of 1080p. With the GeForce GTX 1650 Ti Mobile inside this laptop, this graphics card solution will be capable of meeting 344 games at their minimum system requirements and 0 games at their recommended system requirements of the top 500 most demanding games around today.
A key focus of this laptop review is to compare the Dell G5 15 (2020) i5-10300H GTX 1650 Ti Mobile 8GB RAM 256GB M.2 to all other laptops in terms of how much its $ reflects the value of the gaming performance delivered by the this laptop’s hardware.
We review performance and allocate a P2P rating out of 10 that will adjust over time as the prices for hardware adjust. This laptop is currently given a 9.2 for P2P. With a number of G5 15 (2020) laptops in the model lineup this particular variant places at the 5th position for Price to Performance value. Laptops closer to the top place (1st) are value gaming laptop options that deliver the best performance for the laptop price.

We also see the 16% worse performance from our laptop cpu when looking at the game Watch Dogs Legion for it’s processor requirements.
We may well be looking for a GPU centric laptop, and if that’s the case then let's see how this G5 15 (2020) mobile pc competes with a top GPU performance laptop that is available today. The GPU focused laptop we picked for our comparison is the MSI GT76 Titan i9-10900K RTX 2080 64GB RAM 2.0TB M.2 4K. Its got one of the best graphics cards found in laptops at the moment, which is the GeForce RTX 2080 Super 8GB. But the real test is seeing how well the laptop GPU performs against today's popular games. Our GeForce GTX 1650 Ti Mobile compared against recommended graphics requirements for Cyberpunk 2077 delivers 18% worse performance while against Watch Dogs Legion it’s 18% worse and finally compared to Assassins Creed: Valhalla it has a performance difference : 18% worse.
The Dell G5 15 (2020) i5-10300H GTX 1650 Ti Mobile 8GB RAM 256GB M.2 has a physical 15.6" screen size and a fixed number of pixels in that screen of 1920 pixels wide by 1080 pixels tall, or 1080p resolution. So is it ok to go for a 1080p laptop like this one or should I be considering a 4K screen resolution laptop instead of this? The refresh rate of a 4K laptop panel is often 60Hz. This figure sets a 60 frames per second cap that locks a game to no matter the capability of the hardware in the 4K laptop. However, today’s AAA games, when running at Ultra graphics settings and 4K resolution, usually require hardware that we don't see in laptops or desktops to even reach that 60FPS cap. This particular laptop refresh rate options are 60Hz.
Dropping a game’s resolution down from the laptop’s native 4K resolution to a more sustainable 1080p or maybe 1440p, would certainly deliver extra frames and improve stability. So there is always that option if the experience is unplayable due to low frame rates. But know that this action comes at a price. Dropping from a monitor or laptop panel’s native resolution immediately reduces in-game visual definition across all the game’s graphics. It basically makes the game look blurry. Not an ideal situation if you just bought your new 4K gaming laptop. If the following is the case, where the 1080p gaming laptop could run games you love at a higher 4K resolution then you could always hook up the PC laptop to a desktop monitor. One that was much bigger than the laptop screen size, like a 31inch with 144Hz refresh rate to enjoy 1440p or 4K resolution when gaming at home. Then still have your laptop for mobile gaming as well.
Maybe you are hoping to enjoy your 4K streamed movies and TV shows while on the move. And if you have access to this 4K content and it's your prime use for your new laptop then perhaps it's worth considering a 4K panel, rather than this 1080p.
We think don't spend your extra cash on getting a 4K laptop to game on, as it's likely to feel disappointing to buy a super shiny new 4K laptop, then have to lower the resolution while playing your games, delivering a blurry in-game experience, and only getting up to a maximum 60FPS due to the usual 60Hz 4K panel restriction.
Incidentally our research shows the ASUS ProArt Display PA278QV 27 inch 1440p 75Hz 5ms IPS as our best priced 1440p monitor today. This monitor has a 75Hz refresh rate and a price tag at the moment of $294.99. For extra price trend information on this desktop 1440p monitor, it reached its lowest tracked price on 5th Aug 2020, where it would cost $272.99.
A nice performing 4K desktop monitor, should you want one to accompany this laptop, is the Asus Predator XB273K 27 inch 4K GSYNC IPS 1ms 144Hz. Today it is priced at $829.99 and has a 144Hz refresh rate. During these past 2 weeks, this 4K monitor’s price has gone up by $799. Interestingly we spotted this 4k monitor at its lowest recorded price on 11th Aug 2020, where it was priced up as $797.05.
[Note - check that monitor display connectors are compatible between a monitor and a laptop before purchase]
4K streaming could be a viable reason to consider 4K over 1080p laptop panels.
For now in the laptop space, it looks best to stick with 1080p panels. This way your laptop’s physical size remains practical and portable, 17inch laptops are plenty big enough. And at the moment you will still have to lower game resolutions down from 4K, on the bigger hitting AAA titles, that would then get playable, but sub par visuals and you would still hit the 60FPS cap if your hardware could go beyond 60FPS.
