There are so many variables influencing gaming laptop prices. The hardware they have in them can be adjusted and as soon as we change it it becomes hard to know how one laptop compares to another. This laptop review will take a look at how well the ASUS TUF A15 R7 3750H GTX 1660 Ti 16GB RAM 256GB M.2 can run today’s latest games and what sort of frame rates this ASUS TUF A15 R7 3750H GTX 1660 Ti 16GB RAM 256GB M.2 might achieve. Then we will look at its release price and summarise how good its price in regards to its gaming performance. From there you can compare this laptop and get a good idea of whether this is a good value choice for your gaming needs today and into the future.
Is the ASUS TUF A15 R7 3750H GTX 1660 Ti 16GB RAM 256GB M.2 good as a gaming laptop? Ok
Processor - This laptop processor is able to meet some AAA game 2020 releases. It is considered OK for the moment and casual gamers may be able to make use of it for longer. With 4 processor cores, this hardware is well suited to modern processor actions and good for today’s gaming setup.
Graphics Card - This laptop graphics solution can run plenty of modern AAA game releases in 2020 and is a good gaming laptop GPU choice. This GPU has 6GB of VRAM. This is considered a good amount of VRAm for modern games but some graphics solutions have more.
System Memory - The 16GB is an excellent amount of system memory for modern gaming in 2020.
Screen Size - The 15.6" screen on this laptop is a good size for a 2020 gaming laptop. While a smaller laptop provides better portability than perhaps a 15 or 17 inch gaming laptop, it will also compromise your viewability when in game.
Refresh Rate - If you want a gaming laptop then aim for a refresh rate that is more than 60Hz. If you don't clearly see the advertised laptops screen refresh rate then assume it is 60Hz. This would mean that the laptop will be capped at 60FPS when running games. The higher the refresh rate and the FPS then the smoother the game plays as it delivers more images a second to your screen and makes movement feel more responsive in game. Ok so after those thoughts on refresh rate and its significance to our gaming, the laptop we are looking at here today has a good refresh rate of 120Hz. This would be suitable for advanced gaming up to that refresh rate in terms of FPS
While it can be tricky to work out the best price to performance hardware for a gaming laptop, we will be looking at how well this mobile graphics card can run demanding games that are available today or coming out over the coming months. We will consider how well it can perform while gaming at Ultra graphics setting on a 1080p resolution, which is the native resolution for this laptop. We will also look at a few of the more popular games like, Cyberpunk 2077 or Watch Dogs Legion. The GeForce GTX 1660 Ti 6GB Mobile card that's powering the ASUS TUF A15 R7 3750H GTX 1660 Ti 16GB RAM 256GB M.2 laptop, when compared to today’s top 500 most demanding games, can run 492 at min system specs and will run 352 games when comparing to their increased recommended system requirements.
If we want to look at the gaming value offered by the ASUS TUF A15 R7 3750H GTX 1660 Ti 16GB RAM 256GB M.2 laptop compared tto other gaming laptops, we focus on the performance ability of the hardware and then the relative price of the laptop. Of course a laptop is often more than just its core tech components, like CPU and GPU, but for this exercise we want a standardised way of looking across laptops to see what value they have to today’s laptop gamer. So we consider $1248.99 of each laptop and its core hardware capability in running modern games.
We score the ASUS TUF A15 R7 3750H GTX 1660 Ti 16GB RAM 256GB M.2 9.3 out of ten on the P2P score today. Our price to performance rating value will change for all laptops automatically, as new hardware capability is put into modern laptops and the price for hardware adjusts. This laptop’s configuration, when compared to its own TUF A15 lineup, is currently placed at 7th once we order it by the price to performance figure. Obviously scoring towards the 1st position is preferable.

It's good to see how this TUF A15 laptop compares to models outside of its own model range as well. If we look at the very best P2P laptop, the ASUS TUF A15 R7 4800H GTX 1660 Ti 16GB RAM 512GB M.2, our laptop has 58% worse performance difference when comparing its price to performance rating. That top laptop currently has a listed price of $986.99. The 2nd best model for Price to Performance ratings today is the Acer Nitro 5 2020 R5 4600H GTX 1650 Mobile 16GB RAM 512GB M.2. It’s price is listed as $858.54. Comparing our TUF A15 laptop on its P2P shows our review model to have 47% worse Price to Performance score when compared against the 2nd best laptop range for P2P.
Now we will see if our laptop compares favourably against the top CPU performance focused mobile PC that is currently available. Selecting todays ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 R9 4900HS RTX 2060 Mobile 16GB RAM 1.0TB M.2 1440p laptop, we will use its mighty Ryzen 9 4900HS 8-Core 3.0GHz to compare against our Ryzen 7 3750H 4-Core 2.3 GHz processor from our review laptop. We can see that the top end CPU currently delivers 108% better performance when benched against our own review laptop’s Ryzen 7 3750H 4-Core 2.3 GHz.
Today there are 72 games recommended system requirements that are worse than our CPU’s performance capability, this is when we look at the top 500 most demanding games right now. This figure becomes 471 games, when we look at the 500 demanding games for minimum processor system requirements.
Today’s games are getting more demanding so let's see how our gaming laptop performs against their recommended cpu system requirements. First off we have the Watch Dogs Legion which currently our Ryzen 7 3750H 4-Core 2.3 GHz is 14% worse next let's see how well it runs against Assassins Creed: Valhalla. We can see it is 14% worse. Ok finally lets see it against Cyberpunk 2077. Here our laptop is 19% better.
We may well be looking for a GPU centric laptop, and if that’s the case then let's see how this TUF A15 mobile pc competes with a top GPU performance laptop that is available today. Lets look at the MSI GT76 Titan i9-10900K RTX 2080 64GB RAM 2.0TB M.2 4K laptop due to its graphics processing power. The GPU it houses is ideal for comparison benchmarking, because it currently has one of the best laptop graphics solutions, at the cheapest laptop price. Its GPU is the GeForce RTX 2080 Super 8GB which we compare to the GeForce GTX 1660 Ti 6GB Mobile graphics card in our review laptop. Our performance comparison shows the top end laptop GPU to be 67% better in performance compared to our laptop’s graphics processing power.
Currently 352 games of the top 500 most demanding games today (recommended graphics requirements) can run on the review laptop’s GeForce GTX 1660 Ti 6GB Mobile. Or 492 games of the top 500 most demanding for minimum GPU specs can run on it.
But the real test is seeing how well the laptop GPU performs against today's popular games. Our GeForce GTX 1660 Ti 6GB Mobile compared against recommended graphics requirements for Cyberpunk 2077 delivers 10% better performance while against Watch Dogs Legion it’s 10% better and finally compared to Assassins Creed: Valhalla it has a performance difference : 10% better.
This laptop has a 15.6" physical screen size with a native resolution of 1920x1080. So should you instead be thinking of picking up a 4K monitor rather than this ASUS TUF A15 R7 3750H GTX 1660 Ti 16GB RAM 256GB M.2’s 1080p panel? 4K laptops have a 60Hz screen refresh rate normally, that means a game would not be able to run at more than 60 frames per second even if the hardware could deliver more. While 60FPS would provide acceptable stability, a lot of gamers would prefer higher FPS than this. However, thats not the only issue here. Modern AAA game system requirements would need more powerful gaming hardware than is normally found in laptops, to play reliably at 4K Ultra graphics settings, even at 60FPS. This review laptop has 120Hz refresh rate versions available.
So lowering a game’s screen resolution down to 1080p or 1440p during your gaming of modern AAA games will help get more frames per second. But in doing so, by down scaling the game resolution will then make the game look blurry on a native 4K laptop panel. So the purpose of getting a 4K laptop monitor for gaming maybe lost at this point. If your 1080p laptop has the hardware to run today’s AAA games comfortably at 4K, then plug your laptop into your desktop 4K monitor, when you are at home for some serious gaming sessions. As that desktop monitor probably isn't 60Hz restricted and is physically larger than the relatively small 17inch laptop screen size. We do just that here, with a 27inch 144Hz Nvidia GSync 1440p desktop monitor and an Alienware 51M laptop sporting a desktop RTX 2080.
Maybe you are hoping to enjoy your 4K streamed movies and TV shows while on the move. And if you have access to this 4K content and it's your prime use for your new laptop then perhaps it's worth considering a 4K panel, rather than this 1080p.
At the moment our advice would be, stick to the 1080p laptop panels for now. Your laptop remains portable and 4K laptop’s just aren't quite there yet. The 4K needs to be a no brainer but at the moment you will still have to lower resolution in game to get playable but sub par visuals that still can't raise above 60FPS.
Incidentally our research shows the ASUS ProArt Display PA278QV 27 inch 1440p 75Hz 5ms IPS as our best priced 1440p monitor today. This monitor has a 75Hz refresh rate and a price tag at the moment of $294.99. The suggested 1440p monitor price tracker recorded on 5th Aug 2020, where it reached the low cost price of $272.99.
Why not grab a monitor like the Asus Predator XB273K 27 inch 4K GSYNC IPS 1ms 144Hz 4K screen. It is currently coming in with the best price tag in the 4K range of monitors that we are watching, at $829.99 and has a 144Hz refresh rate. Providing some more insight, this 4K Monitor has increased its price by $799 during these past two weeks. So keep your eyes out as it could be cheaper than we have recorded here today. Our 4k monitor price tracker recorded and marked its lowest price on 11th Aug 2020, it reached the lower price of $797.05.
[Note - check that monitor display connectors are compatible between a monitor and a laptop before purchase]
The primary use we can think of is for streaming 4K movie and TV content, assuming you have access to these services. If this is your primary use for the laptop, rather than gaming then it certainly might be worth considering this.
We still feel it's not the time to spend extra cash for the 4K gaming laptop due to the limitations laid out above. It would surely feel somewhat disappointing to boot up your new 4K laptop, only to then realise you have to drop down the resolution on modern titles to get them to run smoothly. And then see that anything you play is somewhat less sharp than you have seen on your older PC and capped at a maximum of 60FPS due to the usual 60Hz 4K screen tech.
