Our Acer Predator Helios 300 i7-9750H GTX 1660 Ti 16GB RAM 512GB M.2 laptop review today is going to help us understand how well the hardware components in this machine can run today’s modern games. Taking a look at some of the most demanding popular titles we will see some expected frame rates for the Acer Predator Helios 300 i7-9750H GTX 1660 Ti 16GB RAM 512GB M.2 laptop and understand the type of price to performance on offer.
Is the Acer Predator Helios 300 i7-9750H GTX 1660 Ti 16GB RAM 512GB M.2 good as a gaming laptop? Good
Processor - A Core i7-9750H 6-Core 2.6GHz CPU that is housed in this laptop is excellent for modern AAA gaming during 2021. This laptop CPU has 6 cores. This is excellent for modern AAA gaming as the games start to require more cores for simultaneous activities.
Graphics Card - This laptop comes with a good choice of graphics card capable of running lots of 2021 AAA games. The GPU in this laptop comes with 6GB of VRAM. This is a good amount for today’s AAA games.
System Memory - The 16GB is an excellent amount of system memory for modern gaming in 2021.
Screen Size - By our standards our review laptop’s 15.6" panel is considered good for modern 2021 gaming. There are larger laptops but with this laptop you will get a good balance between portability and gaming viewability. The screen size provides a gamer with larger menus, whereas the resolution of the panel provides definition. A gaming laptop screen size, in our eyes, would be 17 inches. We would certainly consider the more portable 15inch, but value gaming viewability and user experience over the slightly improved portability with the smaller screen sizes. A bigger laptop means heavier and harder to move around but more screen space to view games with.
Refresh Rate - Refresh rates can be hard to see, when the laptop reseller doesn't make it clear. Assume 60Hz if this is the case. Ideally for a gaming laptop you want 120Hz. This means the games you run can get up to 120 frames per second, assuming the hardware inside them is powerful enough to deliver that FPS. The refresh rate caps a games deliverable FPS even if the hardware can deliver more FPS than the Hz. The top refresh rate for this laptop is 144Hz which is excellent for gaming. Get a panel with over 60Hz refresh rate would certainly be suitable for gaming.
As gamers, one of the biggest choices we make for a new portable machine is to select a laptop with the right mobile graphics card. With this laptop we are specifically considering how the price-to-performance of the graphics card looks and if it has the capability to run modern popular games like today’s most popular titles, Grand Theft Auto VI and Battlefield 6 in ultra graphics settings on its native 1080p resolution. A first point of reference is seeing how many the mobile gpu, a GeForce GTX 1660 Ti 6GB Mobile found in this laptop, can run of today's 500 most demanding games. In particular it would seem that it can currently run 309 at recommended graphics requirements and then 489 games at their min specs.
A key focus of this laptop review is to compare the Acer Predator Helios 300 i7-9750H GTX 1660 Ti 16GB RAM 512GB M.2 to all other laptops in terms of how much its $1539.00 reflects the value of the gaming performance delivered by the this laptop’s hardware.
With a P2P rating currently of 8.8 out of 10 for the Acer Predator Helios 300 i7-9750H GTX 1660 Ti 16GB RAM 512GB M.2. This relative value will change as hardware costs and their performance change over time for laptops. There look to be a number of Predator Helios 300 versions of this laptop and currently this hardware configuration sits at 3rd in the Price to Performance order. Obviously scoring towards the 1st position represents the better value laptop from a purely gaming performance and price tag perspective.

Our Predator Helios 300 review laptop is 64% worse when comparing Price/Performance against the next top P2P laptop. Again this is purely a value for performance comparison, and many things go into helping us choose the right laptop for us. This is a good indicator but it's certainly then worth looking through the range for other configurations of a laptop you are interested in to find the right price point for you.
As a point of benchmark lets see how well our laptop looks when directly compared on processing performance against the top CPU focused laptop currently available. The ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 17 G733 (2021) R9 5900HX RTX 3080 8GB Max-Q 64GB RAM 2.0TB M.2 1080p 165Hz is today’s best performer in the laptop CPU department. This is 499 games when looking at beating minimum system requirements.
But the real test is seeing how well the laptop CPU performs against today's popular games. Our Core i7-9750H 6-Core 2.6GHz compared against recommended processor requirements for Grand Theft Auto VI delivers 3% better performance while against Battlefield 6 it’s 3% better and finally compared to Resident Evil 8 it has a performance difference : 9% worse.
We may well be looking for a GPU centric laptop, and if that’s the case then let's see how this Predator Helios 300 mobile pc competes with a top GPU performance laptop that is available today. Lets look at the Dell Alienware M17 R4 (2021) i9-10980HK RTX 3080 16GB Mobile 32GB RAM 512GB M.2 1080p 144Hz laptop due to its graphics processing power. The GPU it houses is ideal for comparison benchmarking, because it currently has one of the best laptop graphics solutions, at the cheapest laptop price. Its GPU is the GeForce RTX 3080 16GB Mobile which we compare to the GeForce GTX 1660 Ti 6GB Mobile graphics card in our review laptop. Our performance comparison shows the top end laptop GPU to be 73% better in performance compared to our laptop’s graphics processing power.
A quick review of the number of games our laptop Graphics Card can run at recommended requirements is 309, taken from the top 500 most demanding games today. For min GPU specs this figure for number of games it can run is 489.
Games these days have a range of graphics requirements so let's look at a few popular games of today, and check our laptop GPU against the games recommended requirement. First off, Grand Theft Auto VI and our laptop graphics gets 28% worse performance rating. Next we have Battlefield 6 where our graphics card gets 18% worse performance and finally another popular title at the moment is Resident Evil 8, which has a performance difference of : 18% worse, when put against our laptop’s GeForce GTX 1660 Ti 6GB Mobile.
There is a lot of talk about getting 4K capable monitors and our review laptop has a 1080p native resolution, and a physical 15.6" panel. Lets explore if it would be better for you to grab a laptop with a 4K screen rather than the 1080p offered here? Screen refresh rate on a 4K panel laptop will normally be 60Hz and this will cap out any game’s Frames Per Second at 60 even if it’s hardware could deliver more FPS. Along with that upset most AAA games would struggle to reach that 60 FPS at 4K Ultra graphics settings on most laptop hardware today. We can see 144Hz panel refresh rate versions of this laptop are available. The higher the better.
So more likely, you will have to lower the screen resolution on your 4K laptop to 1080p or 1440p to run modern AAA games at a frame rate that doesnt stutter. By lowering the pixel count, your game will start to look blurry, as you move away from your laptop monitor’s native resolution in order to get more frames per second. Which immediately defeats the purpose of getting a 4K laptop monitor for gaming. A 1080p laptop can still have some powerful gaming hardware in it and if it is good enough to run AAA games at larger resolutions like 4K or 1440p then attach it to a desktop monitor while you are at home and stationary. If the desktop monitor is pretty good then it wont have a 60Hz refresh rate limiting its FPS count in game. And is likely to be a whole lot more enjoyable playing on a 24 inch or larger monitor than the more standard 15 or 17inch screen normally found on gaming laptops.
So why would you get a 4K capable laptop? If you enjoy movies or Netflix at 4K and have access to 4K content via those types of services then perhaps the quality of 4K resolution on a 17inch panel would be a great experience, but we still think you wouldn't miss that 4K.
At the moment our advice would be, stick to the 1080p laptop panels for now. Your laptop remains portable and 4K laptop’s just aren't quite there yet. The 4K needs to be a no brainer but at the moment you will still have to lower resolution in game to get playable but sub par visuals that still can't raise above 60FPS.
A well priced 1440p gaming monitor today is the ASUS ProArt Display PA278QV 27 inch 1440p 75Hz 5ms IPS. With its 75Hz refresh rate and a current price of $307.73 it should go nicely with this Acer Predator Helios 300 i7-9750H GTX 1660 Ti 16GB RAM 512GB M.2 laptop. We like to price track our favourite laptop hardware and peripherals. And as a point of note the lowest tracked price for this 1440p monitor was recorded on 9th Mar 2021, which was priced at $229.99.
Why not grab a monitor like the Asus Predator XB273K 27 inch 4K GSYNC IPS 1ms 144Hz 4K screen. It is currently coming in with the best price tag in the 4K range of monitors that we are watching, at $629.99 and has a 144Hz refresh rate. During these past 2 weeks, this 4K monitor’s price has gone up by $580. Reviewing tracked prices for our suggested 4k monitor, its lowest price was recorded on 13th Nov 2020, where we spotted it for $549.99.
[Note - check that monitor display connectors are compatible between a monitor and a laptop before purchase]
4K streaming could be a viable reason to consider 4K over 1080p laptop panels.
As you can probably gather from the information above, it's probably not worth the extra cash for a 4K laptop if gaming is your Laptop purpose. 1080p is likely plenty and has enough alternative gaming options for when you want better resolution. It feels like you might not get what you were after if you picked up a shiny new 4K laptop, then was needing to lower game resolution, while getting blurry in-game experience and achieving a max 60FPS when you could push the hardware into better frame rates.
