The MSI GE66 Raider i7-10750H RTX 2080 Super Max-Q 32GB RAM 1.0TB M.2 laptop review we are going to do today will look into how its purchase price stacks up against the performance on offer from the hardware housed inside it. We will also be taking a look at today’s more demanding games to see some MSI GE66 Raider i7-10750H RTX 2080 Super Max-Q 32GB RAM 1.0TB M.2 laptop gaming frame rates to help you judge if the value to money ratio is a good deal or not.
Is the MSI GE66 Raider i7-10750H RTX 2080 Super Max-Q 32GB RAM 1.0TB M.2 good as a gaming laptop? Excellent
Processor - A Core i7-10750H 6-Core 2.60GHz CPU that is housed in this laptop is excellent for modern AAA gaming during 2021. The processor in this laptop has 6 cores, which makes it excellent for modern gamers, minimising the risk of throttling game processes due to a lack of available cores.
Graphics Card - The GeForce RTX 2080 Super Max-Q is an excellent gaming GPU for 2021. The 8GB that this graphics solution has is excellent for all modern gaming.
System Memory - The 32GB of RAM found in this laptop is an excellent quantity to deal with the requirements of 2021 AAA gaming.
Screen Size - The 15.6" screen on this laptop is a good size for a 2021 gaming laptop. Our target size for a gaming laptop is 17 inches, 15 inches is always a good size if portability is more your focus, but in our minds we want the largest screen size while still being portable, so we can more clearly see the games.
Refresh Rate - Look for higher refresh rate hertz for a gaming laptop. Ideally around 120Hz or more refresh rate on a gaming laptop screen. The laptop can only deliver FPS(frames per second) up to the listed refresh rate. So if you have hardware in your laptop that can turn out awesome frame rates on all the latest AAA titles, but a 60hz refresh rate, your laptop will be stuck at a maximum of 60FPS in all games. Ok so after that refresh rate recap we can see that this laptop can be found with the excellent gaming refresh rate of 300Hz. However, you can always look for others, but try to find something with more than 60Hz.
The big one in any gaming PC is making sure the graphics card is up to the task of modern gaming. And this is of course the same for choosing the right gaming laptop as well. Therefore we will be considering this laptop’s hardware in relation to its overall price and how well it could run modern demanding or popular games like Grand Theft Auto VI, Battlefield 6 and Resident Evil 8. This is done in relation to its native 1080p resolution at Ultra video settings to give us something to compare against other laptops. Coming loaded with the GeForce RTX 2080 Super Max-Q, this laptop is capable of beating 499 games at their minimum system specs and 483 games at their recommended system specs. This is when looking at today’s top 500 most demanding games.
During your research for your next laptop, you have probably seen that the laptops reviewed are often the top permutation of the range and even then they were reviewed some time back against games that were released around the time of the review. We score the MSI GE66 Raider i7-10750H RTX 2080 Super Max-Q 32GB RAM 1.0TB M.2 7 out of ten on the P2P score today. Some of the most popular games today are really the primary benchmark for any laptop’s ability, so we thought we should compare our laptop CPU Core i7-10750H 6-Core 2.60GHz against Grand Theft Auto VI. This CPU performance comparison saw our laptop deliver 9% better performance against the game’s recommended CPU system requirements. Then we have Battlefield 6 and our laptop was 17% better in processor performance and another popular title today is Resident Evil 8 which we saw our review laptop get 3% worse compared to our laptop cpu.
A good comparison in terms of graphical power for our review model would be to compare it to one of the most powerful GPU focused laptop’s around today. This type of comparison can show us what another laptop, with a top end graphics hardware solution, can deliver and in turn provide us a relative point of laptop Graphics Card cost comparison. Our comparison GPU focused laptop today that we have selected is a Dell Alienware M17 R4 (2021) i9-10980HK RTX 3080 16GB Mobile 32GB RAM 512GB M.2 1080p 144Hz, which comes loaded with the GeForce RTX 3080 16GB Mobile card. Our laptop’s GPU can currently run 483 of today’s top 500 demanding games meeting their recommended Graphics Card requirements. This figure is 499 for the top 500 minimum requirement games that can be run by the GeForce RTX 2080 Super Max-Q.
Lets take a look and see how well our GeForce RTX 2080 Super Max-Q compares against today’s most popular games. Against the recommended graphics specs for Grand Theft Auto VI our laptop is 6% better, and compared to Battlefield 6 it is 15% better , where as against Resident Evil 8 it delivers 15% better performance.
This MSI GE66 Raider i7-10750H RTX 2080 Super Max-Q 32GB RAM 1.0TB M.2 laptop has a 15.6" physical screen size and displays 1920 pixel by 1080 pixels tall native 1080p resolution. Is this 1080p laptop good for your needs though or should you instead be looking to buy a 4K screen mobile PC rather than this? Screen refresh rate on a 4K panel laptop will normally be 60Hz and this will cap out any game’s Frames Per Second at 60 even if it’s hardware could deliver more FPS. Along with that upset most AAA games would struggle to reach that 60 FPS at 4K Ultra graphics settings on most laptop hardware today. The MSI GE66 Raider i7-10750H RTX 2080 Super Max-Q 32GB RAM 1.0TB M.2 laptop’s monitor can be picked up with 300Hz refresh rate versions.
So more likely, you will have to lower the screen resolution on your 4K laptop to 1080p or 1440p to run modern AAA games at a frame rate that doesnt stutter. By lowering the pixel count, your game will start to look blurry, as you move away from your laptop monitor’s native resolution in order to get more frames per second. Which immediately defeats the purpose of getting a 4K laptop monitor for gaming. If the new 4K laptop has the performance to play modern games at 4K resolution, then perhaps the laptop’s 15 or 17 inch screen isnt enough to fully enjoy the high pixel count? So if you have or can get a desktop monitor that delivers more than the 60Hz frame rate limiter, for that gaming experience then you can keep your laptop mobile and still enjoy high end gaming.
Possibly a suitable purpose for a 4K laptop would be if you were keen to watch 4K streaming services like Netflix. At which point perhaps it's enough of a selling point for you to consider a 4K laptop?
We think don't spend your extra cash on getting a 4K laptop to game on, as it's likely to feel disappointing to buy a super shiny new 4K laptop, then have to lower the resolution while playing your games, delivering a blurry in-game experience, and only getting up to a maximum 60FPS due to the usual 60Hz 4K panel restriction.
A well priced 1440p gaming monitor with 75Hz, is the ASUS ProArt Display PA278QV 27 inch 1440p 75Hz 5ms IPS, which is currently priced at $307.73 and would work well with our MSI GE66 Raider i7-10750H RTX 2080 Super Max-Q 32GB RAM 1.0TB M.2 laptop. For extra price trend information on this desktop 1440p monitor, it reached its lowest tracked price on 9th Mar 2021, where it would cost $229.99.
A nice performing 4K desktop monitor, should you want one to accompany this laptop, is the Asus Predator XB273K 27 inch 4K GSYNC IPS 1ms 144Hz. Today it is priced at $629.99 and has a 144Hz refresh rate. We have noticed that this 4K monitor has raised its price by $580 recently. And while it is a good 4K monitor even at this current price, it could probably be found for a bit cheaper. To give a bit more info about this monitor we saw it cost its lowest of $549.99, which we recorded on 13th Nov 2020.
[Note - check that monitor display connectors are compatible between a monitor and a laptop before purchase]
So why would you get a 4K capable laptop? If you enjoy movies or Netflix at 4K and have access to 4K content via those types of services then perhaps the quality of 4K resolution on a 17inch panel would be a great experience, but we still think you wouldn't miss that 4K.
Paying extra for 4K gaming in a laptop is not really a good investment of your cash at the moment. We would put our extra cash in to a 1080p with better graphics card or maybe a nice mouse or headset. Because with the 4K laptop you may be sad when having to drop your favourite modern games screen resolution to get an ok frame rate. Or perhaps lowering the graphics setting to increase 4K FPS up to a stable and playable amount, only to hit a 60FPS ceiling due to the 60Hz 4K panel limit.
