If you adjust the spec you are looking at on a gaming laptop, the price hikes up and makes it harder to judge price to performance. Today's Dell G3 15 (2020) i5-10300H GTX 1650 Mobile 8GB RAM 256GB M.2 laptop review is going to give us all a good sense of these sorts of values. We will take a look at what sort of performance you can expect the Dell G3 15 (2020) i5-10300H GTX 1650 Mobile 8GB RAM 256GB M.2 laptop to return across the more demanding games of today.
Is the Dell G3 15 (2020) i5-10300H GTX 1650 Mobile 8GB RAM 256GB M.2 good as a gaming laptop? Not for gaming
Processor - Our laptop’s Core i5-10300H 4-Core 2.50GHz processor is just about OK as a gamers processor. However, in a year or so this bit of hardware will start to show its age and performance when up against modern game requirements. This CPU has 4 cores, which is a good number for avoiding bottlenecked processes in modern AAA games.
Graphics Card - Our laptop’s GeForce GTX 1650 Mobile is not a gamers graphics solution. And while with some tweaks some games in 2020 might run, this is certainly not a gamers laptop option. Some AAA games can use a lot of VRAM. This laptop GPU comes with 4GB of VRAM, which isnt a lot by today’s standards. And while it is OK, the VRAM may start to cause a bit of a problem in future AAA games.
System Memory - Today’s 2020 games are well catered for by the 8GB system memory found in this laptop. While you could find a machine with more RAM, this is a good gamer laptop choice.
Screen Size - This is a good screen size for gamers. This laptop has a 15.6" and is suitable for running new release titles during the 2020 gaming year. Our preference for gaming laptops is actually 17 inch, which provides plenty of screen real estate for the in-game detail, while still providing a portable enough PC.
Refresh Rate - If you want a gaming laptop then aim for a refresh rate that is more than 60Hz. If you don't clearly see the advertised laptops screen refresh rate then assume it is 60Hz. This would mean that the laptop will be capped at 60FPS when running games. The higher the refresh rate and the FPS then the smoother the game plays as it delivers more images a second to your screen and makes movement feel more responsive in game. Ok so after those thoughts on refresh rate and its significance to our gaming, the laptop we are looking at here today has a good refresh rate of 120Hz. This would be suitable for advanced gaming up to that refresh rate in terms of FPS
Getting the right graphics card for this mobile gaming machine will be one of our key focuses. As we know it can be tricky to break this down, but we will be looking at how this laptop hardware can run across demanding and popular modern games and therefore how well the price of the machine stacks up against other gaming laptops. A few of the modern demanding or popular games we will be looking at will be, Cyberpunk 2077, Watch Dogs Legion and Assassins Creed: Valhalla. Seeing how these games run on the laptops native 1080p resolution at ultra will certainly give us something tangible to consider and compare from. Now this comes with the GeForce GTX 1650 Mobile installed as the mobile graphics card, and at the moment it is capable of running 315 games at their minimum graphics system specs and then running 0 recommended specs of today’s top 500 most demanding games.
Now let us compare the Dell G3 15 (2020) i5-10300H GTX 1650 Mobile 8GB RAM 256GB M.2 laptop to other gaming laptops, with regards to the performance ability it delivers and when considering the price of the laptop. Obviously there are many things that go into a quality laptop build, but at this point we want a standardised system to compare across laptops just on that criteria. It will consider $ of the laptop with regards to its key hardware capability in running modern games performance delivered by this laptop’s hardware.
We review performance and allocate a P2P rating out of 10 that will adjust over time as the prices for hardware adjust. This laptop is currently given a 9.4 for P2P. This version of the G3 15 (2020) laptop is currently positioned at 4th when ordered in the range lineup for Price to Performance value rating. The closer to 1st place the better gaming performance it deliver for its price.

To give us a bit of insight we will compare our laptop with a leading GPU performance laptop and see how its graphics capability performs against it. A good laptop to compare against, that is GPU focused, would be the MSI GT76 Titan i9-10900K RTX 2080 64GB RAM 2.0TB M.2 4K. This showcases one of the laptops for the current cheapest price, while still housing one of the most powerful laptop GPUs. This laptop’s panel has a physical 15.6" screen that delivers 1920x1080 pixels natively. But should you consider moving from this 1080p laptop and searching for a 4K laptop instead, with the intention of getting better visuals for your games or movies? We normally see a 60Hz screen refresh rate accompanying most 4K laptop panels. Which means a game would reach a top 60 FPS before it maxed out, even if the laptop’s hardware was powerful enough to deliver frame rates that were better than that. Today’s AAA games are usually too demanding for a 4K resolution anyway. It’s worth noting that the Dell G3 15 (2020) i5-10300H GTX 1650 Mobile 8GB RAM 256GB M.2 panel is available with the following panel refresh rates 120Hz.
So more likely, you will have to lower the screen resolution on your 4K laptop to 1080p or 1440p to run modern AAA games at a frame rate that doesnt stutter. By lowering the pixel count, your game will start to look blurry, as you move away from your laptop monitor’s native resolution in order to get more frames per second. Which immediately defeats the purpose of getting a 4K laptop monitor for gaming. If the new 4K laptop has the performance to play modern games at 4K resolution, then perhaps the laptop’s 15 or 17 inch screen isnt enough to fully enjoy the high pixel count? So if you have or can get a desktop monitor that delivers more than the 60Hz frame rate limiter, for that gaming experience then you can keep your laptop mobile and still enjoy high end gaming.
Maybe you are hoping to enjoy your 4K streamed movies and TV shows while on the move. And if you have access to this 4K content and it's your prime use for your new laptop then perhaps it's worth considering a 4K panel, rather than this 1080p.
At the moment our advice would be, stick to the 1080p laptop panels for now. Your laptop remains portable and 4K laptop’s just aren't quite there yet. The 4K needs to be a no brainer but at the moment you will still have to lower resolution in game to get playable but sub par visuals that still can't raise above 60FPS.
Incidentally our research shows the ASUS ProArt Display PA278QV 27 inch 1440p 75Hz 5ms IPS as our best priced 1440p monitor today. A well priced 4K gaming monitor with 144Hz refresh rate is the Asus Predator XB273K 27 inch 4K GSYNC IPS 1ms 144Hz. It has a price today of $829.99 and should be a nice accompaniment to the Dell G3 15 (2020) i5-10300H GTX 1650 Mobile 8GB RAM 256GB M.2 laptop. It's interesting that even though this is a well priced 4K monitor today, our price tracking shows it has gone up in price by $799 during recent weeks. [Note - check that monitor display connectors are compatible between a monitor and a laptop before purchase]
4K streaming could be a viable reason to consider 4K over 1080p laptop panels.
As you can probably gather from the information above, it's probably not worth the extra cash for a 4K laptop if gaming is your Laptop purpose. 1080p is likely plenty and has enough alternative gaming options for when you want better resolution. It feels like you might not get what you were after if you picked up a shiny new 4K laptop, then was needing to lower game resolution, while getting blurry in-game experience and achieving a max 60FPS when you could push the hardware into better frame rates.
