Gaming Laptop Analysis
Is the Dell G3 15 (2020) i5-10300H GTX 1660 Ti 16GB RAM 512GB M.2 good as a gaming laptop? Ok
Processor - This laptop’s Core i5-10300H 4-Core 2.50GHz CPU is OK for modern 2023 AAA gaming. As time moves on this CPU will quickly start to struggle with modern game requirements. CPU cores in modern gaming are being utilised more and more by the AAA releases. This CPU has 4 cores, which is certainly a good number of cores.
Graphics Card - The GeForce GTX 1660 Ti 6GB Mobile graphics card is an OK 2023 gaming card, but it will probably have issues next year when trying to run the latest releases. Indy titles and casual gaming should be fine though for some time to come. The 6GB VRAM found in this laptop’s GPU is certainly a good quantity for modern games.
System Memory - This system memory, 16GB, is excellent for meeting 2023 AAA game requirements.
Screen Size - This laptop comes with a good screen size (15.6") which is certainly capable of viewing and playing 2023 titles. Larger screens can offer better in-game views, as often game HUDs and menus can take up a fair amount of a smaller laptop screen space and leave you squinting at the detail or text. We would normally be aiming for 17 inch panels for a good gaming laptop dimension. However, they are heavier and bigger, so it really depends on how portable you want your laptop.
Refresh Rate - Look for higher refresh rate hertz for a gaming laptop. Ideally around 120Hz or more refresh rate on a gaming laptop screen. The laptop can only deliver FPS(frames per second) up to the listed refresh rate. So if you have hardware in your laptop that can turn out awesome frame rates on all the latest AAA titles, but a 60hz refresh rate, your laptop will be stuck at a maximum of 60FPS in all games. Ok so after those thoughts on refresh rate and its significance to our gaming, the laptop we are looking at here today has a good refresh rate of 120Hz. This would be suitable for advanced gaming up to that refresh rate in terms of FPS

The Dell G3 15 (2020) i5-10300H GTX 1660 Ti 16GB RAM 512GB M.2 has a 1080p screen resolution, should I get a 4K resolution gaming laptop instead?
With 4K monitors being ever present and often talked about in the same breath as the term ‘future proof’, its always worth exploring the idea that you should be looking at 4K instead of this 1080p laptop. Our Dell G3 15 (2020) i5-10300H GTX 1660 Ti 16GB RAM 512GB M.2’s physical 15.6" panel delivers 1920 pixels across its width and 1080 pixels tall. With 60Hz being the usual screen refresh rate on 4K laptop panels this would cap a game to run at no more than 60 frames per second, even if the 4K laptop hardware could deliver more. And then most AAA games require more powerful hardware than a laptop houses to play stable 4K Ultra graphics setting games, even at a passable but, some would consider, a bit low, 60FPS. A higher refresh rate is better and this Dell G3 15 (2020) i5-10300H GTX 1660 Ti 16GB RAM 512GB M.2 variant is available with 120Hz versions.
As a somewhat last resort a gamer could lower a game’s displayed screen resolution away from the 4K laptop’s native pixel count. Dropping down to 1080p or maybe 1440p would deliver more frames per second in game and help provide a more stable FPS in modern AAA games. But taking this action, moving away from the native 4K resolution, immediately reduces game graphics definition and makes it look blurry. Not an ideal situation on a new gaming 4K laptop. But if the laptop does have the hardware to run today's AAA titles at 4K resolution, a normal sized portable PC comes with a 15 or 17 inch panel. This might not be physically big enough to make the most of the splendors of your game. It would of course look great still, but perhaps a dedicated monitor for your desk, one that isnt 60Hz restricted would accommodate that gaming scenario.
The primary use we can think of is for streaming 4K movie and TV content, assuming you have access to these services. If this is your primary use for the laptop, rather than gaming then it certainly might be worth considering this.
At the moment our advice would be, stick to the 1080p laptop panels for now. Your laptop remains portable and 4K laptop’s just aren't quite there yet. The 4K needs to be a no brainer but at the moment you will still have to lower resolution in game to get playable but sub par visuals that still can't raise above 60FPS.

Today’s best 4K desktop monitor for a laptop is - Asus Predator XB273K 27 inch 4K GSYNC IPS 1ms 144Hz
Why not grab a monitor like the Asus Predator XB273K 27 inch 4K GSYNC IPS 1ms 144Hz 4K screen. It is currently coming in with the best price tag in the 4K range of monitors that we are watching, at $618 and has a 144Hz refresh rate. Providing some more insight, this 4K Monitor has increased its price by $618 during these past two weeks. So keep your eyes out as it could be cheaper than we have recorded here today. [Note - check that monitor display connectors are compatible between a monitor and a laptop before purchase]
Maybe you are hoping to enjoy your 4K streamed movies and TV shows while on the move. And if you have access to this 4K content and it's your prime use for your new laptop then perhaps it's worth considering a 4K panel, rather than this 1080p.
Paying extra for 4K gaming in a laptop is not really a good investment of your cash at the moment. We would put our extra cash in to a 1080p with better graphics card or maybe a nice mouse or headset. Because with the 4K laptop you may be sad when having to drop your favourite modern games screen resolution to get an ok frame rate. Or perhaps lowering the graphics setting to increase 4K FPS up to a stable and playable amount, only to hit a 60FPS ceiling due to the 60Hz 4K panel limit.
