Gaming Laptop Analysis

Is the MSI GF65 Thin (2021) i7-10750H RTX 3060 Max-Q 16GB RAM 512GB M.2 1080p 144Hz good as a gaming laptop? Good

Processor - Modern AAA 2021 gaming with the Core i7-10750H 6-Core 2.60GHz processor is no problem. As it meets game requirements of today it will likely hold its own against future release titles as well, this is an excellent CPU for a gaming laptop. The 6 cores that this processor has is excellent and very capable for today and future AAA gaming.

Graphics Card - This graphics card, GeForce RTX 3060 Max-Q, is good at running 2021 AAA titles and a good choice for a gamer on the move. The 6GB VRAM found in this laptop’s GPU is certainly a good quantity for modern games.

System Memory - The 16GB of RAM found in this laptop is an excellent quantity to deal with the requirements of 2021 AAA gaming.

Screen Size - This is a good screen size for gamers. This laptop has a 15.6" and is suitable for running new release titles during the 2021 gaming year. We would probably prefer the larger 17 inch size laptop for an ideal gamers laptop, but perhaps this smaller size would tick your requirement for smaller and more portable.

Refresh Rate - If you are focused on a gaming laptop then ideally you want a refresh rate of 120Hz or 144Hz or more. A lot of laptops come with 60Hz and this will stop your games being able to run in more than 60 Frames per second. Even if you hardware is capable of far more frames per second. After considering that, we can see that this laptop has an excellent 144Hz gaming laptop refresh rate. But otherwise for peace of mind, try and find a laptop panel that is more than 60Hz and that will still be ok.

MSI GF65 Thin (2021) i7-10750H RTX 3060 Max-Q 16GB RAM 512GB M.2 1080p 144Hz model range price to performance comparison table

Again only comparing against Price to Performance we can see that the second best model in today’s P2P ranking list is the MSI Bravo 15 R7 4800H RX 5500M 16GB RAM 512GB M.2 laptop, and our laptop is 19% worse when compared against this price to performance rating. How does the MSI GF65 Thin (2021) i7-10750H RTX 3060 Max-Q 16GB RAM 512GB M.2 1080p 144Hz laptop compare to the best CPU performance focused laptops and today’s most popular games?

To get a good comparison when considering how well this laptop performs in terms of processing power, we will compare it to today’s most powerful CPU focused laptop. This will at least show us what other sorts of processor-centric laptops exist and give us a relative point of laptop processor cost comparison. We will choose the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 R9 4900HS RTX 2060 Mobile 16GB RAM 1.0TB M.2 laptop for our CPU comparison tests as that laptop currently has the best CPU in it at the cheapest laptop price. Its CPU is the Ryzen 9 4900HS 8-Core 3.0GHz which we will compare to our review laptop’s Core i7-10750H 6-Core 2.60GHz processor. Our performance comparison shows the top end laptop CPU to be 35% better in performance compared to our laptop’s processor.

Today there are 451 games recommended system requirements that are worse than our CPU’s performance capability, this is when we look at the top 500 most demanding games right now. This figure becomes 499 games, when we look at the 500 demanding games for minimum processor system requirements.

How about we compare our laptop processor performance against Battlefield 2042 recommended processor requirement? Our laptop gets 28% better performance. Next let's check the top game of the moment, Far Cry 6, which shows the review laptop’s cpu against that game’s system specs gets 9% better performance. We also see the 41% better performance from our laptop cpu when looking at the game New World for it’s processor requirements.

How does the MSI GF65 Thin (2021) i7-10750H RTX 3060 Max-Q 16GB RAM 512GB M.2 1080p 144Hz laptop compare to the best graphics card performance focused laptops and today’s most popular games?

One of the most important focuses of a gaming PC is the graphics card and our review laptop is certainly no different. As such we will want to know how well our GF65 Thin (2021) laptop performs in the graphical visuals area compared to what is available on the current laptop market. A great way to consider this is by putting it into a comparison against a well priced laptop that has the most powerful laptop GPU around at the moment, and then we can review its performance against that top graphics card laptop. We have chosen this next laptop for its GPU power, which is the MSI GT76 Titan i9-10900K RTX 2080 Super 64GB RAM 2.0TB M.2 4K, and comes packing a GeForce RTX 2080 Super 8GB video card. That graphics card performs 45% better when compared to our review laptop’s GeForce RTX 3060 Max-Q.

Our laptop’s GPU can currently run 331 of today’s top 500 demanding games meeting their recommended Graphics Card requirements. This figure is 491 for the top 500 minimum requirement games that can be run by the GeForce RTX 3060 Max-Q.

Recommended graphics requirements for modern games increase all the time, so we thought we would compare the performance of our laptop graphics card to some popular games of today. First off there is New World and our laptop GPU delivers 44% better performance compared to that game’s requirement. Next we have Battlefield 2042 in which we see our laptop graphics has 22% worse performance compared to the game's video card specs. And then there is 11% worse performance when we put our laptop gpu against Far Cry 6 recommended specs.

The MSI GF65 Thin (2021) i7-10750H RTX 3060 Max-Q 16GB RAM 512GB M.2 1080p 144Hz has a 1080p screen resolution, should I get a 4K resolution gaming laptop instead?

With 4K monitors being ever present and often talked about in the same breath as the term ‘future proof’, its always worth exploring the idea that you should be looking at 4K instead of this 1080p laptop. Our MSI GF65 Thin (2021) i7-10750H RTX 3060 Max-Q 16GB RAM 512GB M.2 1080p 144Hz’s physical 15.6" panel delivers 1920 pixels across its width and 1080 pixels tall. 4K laptops have a 60Hz screen refresh rate normally, that means a game would not be able to run at more than 60 frames per second even if the hardware could deliver more. While 60FPS would provide acceptable stability, a lot of gamers would prefer higher FPS than this. However, thats not the only issue here. Modern AAA game system requirements would need more powerful gaming hardware than is normally found in laptops, to play reliably at 4K Ultra graphics settings, even at 60FPS. Our review laptop, the MSI GF65 Thin (2021) i7-10750H RTX 3060 Max-Q 16GB RAM 512GB M.2 1080p 144Hz has 144Hz monitor screen refresh rate of versions available.

We can always lower the game’s displayed screen resolution to something like 1080p or 1440p which is below the 4K laptop’s native pixel count. This will get a more stable game experience, increasing a game’s FPS that might be needed across a number of modern AAA games on a 4K laptop. However, getting away from the laptop’s more native 4K resolution, will take away in-game graphics definition. Not an ideal situation, playing blurry games on your new 4K laptop. The laptop has got 4K capable hardware? Well when you are not on the move, plug the laptop into a 144Hz or better desktop monitor that’s 28inches and comes with a 1440p or 4K resolution to enjoy modern gaming without FPS or size limits.

If you stream 4K content, films, services like Netflix then perhaps the quality of 4K resolution on a 17inch panel would be better than the 1080p alternative that the majority of laptops provide.

At the moment our advice would be, stick to the 1080p laptop panels for now. Your laptop remains portable and 4K laptop’s just aren't quite there yet. The 4K needs to be a no brainer but at the moment you will still have to lower resolution in game to get playable but sub par visuals that still can't raise above 60FPS.

Today’s best 1440p desktop monitor for a laptop is - ASUS ProArt Display PA278QV 27 inch 1440p 75Hz 5ms IPS

Today’s best priced 1440p gaming monitor, to work nicely with our MSI GF65 Thin (2021) i7-10750H RTX 3060 Max-Q 16GB RAM 512GB M.2 1080p 144Hz, would be the ASUS ProArt Display PA278QV 27 inch 1440p 75Hz 5ms IPS, which is priced at $311.99 and has a refresh rate of 75Hz. To help you get a bit more insight into the pricing trends of this 1440p monitor, we have price tracked this monitor and saw its lowest price recorded at $229.99, which was taken on 9th Mar 2021.

Today’s best 4K desktop monitor for a laptop is - Asus Predator XB273K 27 inch 4K GSYNC IPS 1ms 144Hz

Here is a 4K monitor to compliment any laptop - Asus Predator XB273K 27 inch 4K GSYNC IPS 1ms 144Hz. We watch a handful and it is currently the best priced at $618. It has a 144Hz refresh rate as well. We price track a number of carefully chosen laptop peripherals and during these past couple of weeks we saw that this 4k monitor has seen a slight price increase, but despite that it is still better quality to value compared to our other favourite monitors. Its recent price increased by $618, so perhaps it can be found a little cheaper elsewhere at the moment Our 4k monitor price tracker recorded and marked its lowest price on 13th Nov 2020, it reached the lower price of $549.99.

[Note - check that monitor display connectors are compatible between a monitor and a laptop before purchase]

If you are looking to view 4K streaming content, while keeping yourself mobile with your laptop, then maybe a 4K resolution panel would be a better experience than the normal 1080p. In general, we think it's probably not worth the extra money for any visual gains you might not spot, without a direct comparison, especially if you are thinking to game on your laptop as well.

Paying extra for 4K gaming in a laptop is not really a good investment of your cash at the moment. We would put our extra cash in to a 1080p with better graphics card or maybe a nice mouse or headset. Because with the 4K laptop you may be sad when having to drop your favourite modern games screen resolution to get an ok frame rate. Or perhaps lowering the graphics setting to increase 4K FPS up to a stable and playable amount, only to hit a 60FPS ceiling due to the 60Hz 4K panel limit.
