The MSI Bravo 15 R7 4800H RX 5500M 32GB RAM 512GB M.2 laptop review we are going to do today will look into how its purchase price stacks up against the performance on offer from the hardware housed inside it. We will also be taking a look at today’s more demanding games to see some MSI Bravo 15 R7 4800H RX 5500M 32GB RAM 512GB M.2 laptop gaming frame rates to help you judge if the value to money ratio is a good deal or not.
Is the MSI Bravo 15 R7 4800H RX 5500M 32GB RAM 512GB M.2 good as a gaming laptop? Not for gaming
Processor - With the Ryzen 7 4800H 8-Core 2.9GHz processor in this laptop its excellent for 2021 gaming, capable of running today’s game processor system requirements. Loaded up with plenty of processor cores, this CPU has 8, which is excellent for AAA gaming that wants extra cores for processing.
Graphics Card - The Radeon RX 5500M 4GB is not for modern gaming. Perhaps some modern indie games might run on it. This laptop has 4GB of VRAM available. This graphics solution is OK for today’s gaming, but will struggle with some games and certainly start to cause a problem in the near future of AAA gaming.
System Memory - Today’s AAA 2021 gaming is easily covered by the 32GB RAM in this machine, making this an excellent gaming laptop choice.
Screen Size - This laptop comes with a good screen size (15.0") which is certainly capable of viewing and playing 2021 titles. Larger screens can offer better in-game views, as often game HUDs and menus can take up a fair amount of a smaller laptop screen space and leave you squinting at the detail or text. We would normally be aiming for 17 inch panels for a good gaming laptop dimension. However, they are heavier and bigger, so it really depends on how portable you want your laptop.
Refresh Rate - The higher the screen panel refresh rate, the better for gaming laptops. The refresh rate is the number of times a second the screen is capable of refreshing the game’s image. If a laptop can deliver 100 frames per second (FPS) in a game and your laptop has a 60Hz refresh rate, then you will only get a max of 60 frames per second. The higher the refresh rate and the game’s FPS the smoother the sharpness is as the screen view moves around in game. And so considering that, this laptop is available with up to 144Hz as its refresh rate. This high refresh rate would be an excellent choice in a gamers laptop, but anything over 60Hz would be suitable.
Gamers looking at laptops will be needing to carefully consider the performance of the machine in relation to modern, often demanding, games. So getting the mobile graphics selected correctly is key to identifying the best price-to-performance laptop for you. We will take a look at the hardware and graphics card in this laptop in relation to how well it can deliver frame rates when running modern demanding or popular games like, New World or Resident Evil 8. We will consider the laptop when it runs these games in ultra graphics settings while gaming at its native 1080p screen resolution. A good way of considering performance of this mobile graphics card is by seeing how many of today's 500 most demanding games can be run at recommended graphics settings by the Radeon RX 5500M 4GB found in this laptop. We can also then look at the weaker minimum requirement to see how many this laptop card can run of them, and it is 317 games at their min specs and then 0 games can be run at recommended graphics requirements.
We really want to see how the MSI Bravo 15 R7 4800H RX 5500M 32GB RAM 512GB M.2 will compare across all permutations of the Bravo 15 model range. This will give us a good sense of how well it sits in terms of cost to performance within its own lineup, and will better help us decide if this laptop represents good value to us today.
We currently give the MSI Bravo 15 R7 4800H RX 5500M 32GB RAM 512GB M.2 laptop a 10 out of 10 for its P2P score. Where the higher the better rating. As mentioned the figure will adjust as new hardware is released and performance expectations shift over time. As not all laptops and their prices are of course valued equally we can see that this version of the Bravo 15 laptop is in 3rd position on the best Price to Performance value rating. Those closer to 1st place are simply better gaming laptop options regarding the gaming performance they deliver for their price.

CPU performance is always going to be something we are interested in, when looking to buy a new laptop. So if we compare this Bravo 15 laptop to a CPU focused laptop, we will pick today’s top CPU performing laptop at the cheapest price point, then we can use this as a good measuring point for our laptop in question. We will choose the ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 17 G733 (2021) R9 5900HX RTX 3080 8GB Max-Q 64GB RAM 2.0TB M.2 1080p 165Hz laptop for our CPU comparison tests as that laptop currently has the best CPU in it at the cheapest laptop price. This is when we look at the top 500 most demanding games around today. For minimum system requirements in this same area the number is 500 games are worse than our cpu performance, again looking at the top 500 most demanding minimum system requirements.
When compared to the recommended processor requirements of the most popular games today, like New World our laptop CPU is 59% better in performance. Compared to Resident Evil 8 our laptop processor is 4% better.
Graphics power is a primary laptop hardware area for consideration and so let's check our Bravo 15 by comparing it against a top GPU focused laptop thats available today. We choose the Dell Alienware M17 R4 (2021) i9-10980HK RTX 3080 16GB Mobile 32GB RAM 512GB M.2 1080p 144Hz laptop as one of the best GPU laptop performers today to compare graphics ability with our laptop. This is basically how many recommended game system requirements our laptop GPU beats in performance today, but we will update this figure as new games come out. This is 317 games when looking at beating minimum system requirements.
Lets take a look and see how well our Radeon RX 5500M 4GB compares against today’s most popular games. Against the recommended graphics specs for New World our laptop is 21% worse, and compared to Resident Evil 8 it is 88% worse , where as against Battlefield 2042 it delivers 68% worse performance.
There is a lot of talk about getting 4K capable monitors and our review laptop has a 1080p native resolution, and a physical 15.0" panel. Lets explore if it would be better for you to grab a laptop with a 4K screen rather than the 1080p offered here? With 60Hz being the usual screen refresh rate on 4K laptop panels this would cap a game to run at no more than 60 frames per second, even if the 4K laptop hardware could deliver more. And then most AAA games require more powerful hardware than a laptop houses to play stable 4K Ultra graphics setting games, even at a passable but, some would consider, a bit low, 60FPS. This review laptop has 144Hz, 120Hz refresh rate versions available.
As a somewhat last resort a gamer could lower a game’s displayed screen resolution away from the 4K laptop’s native pixel count. Dropping down to 1080p or maybe 1440p would deliver more frames per second in game and help provide a more stable FPS in modern AAA games. But taking this action, moving away from the native 4K resolution, immediately reduces game graphics definition and makes it look blurry. Not an ideal situation on a new gaming 4K laptop. If the new 4K laptop has the performance to play modern games at 4K resolution, then perhaps the laptop’s 15 or 17 inch screen isnt enough to fully enjoy the high pixel count? So if you have or can get a desktop monitor that delivers more than the 60Hz frame rate limiter, for that gaming experience then you can keep your laptop mobile and still enjoy high end gaming.
Maybe you are hoping to enjoy your 4K streamed movies and TV shows while on the move. And if you have access to this 4K content and it's your prime use for your new laptop then perhaps it's worth considering a 4K panel, rather than this 1080p.
At the moment our advice would be, stick to the 1080p laptop panels for now. Your laptop remains portable and 4K laptop’s just aren't quite there yet. The 4K needs to be a no brainer but at the moment you will still have to lower resolution in game to get playable but sub par visuals that still can't raise above 60FPS.
A well priced 1440p gaming monitor with 75Hz, is the ASUS ProArt Display PA278QV 27 inch 1440p 75Hz 5ms IPS, which is currently priced at $299.00 and would work well with our MSI Bravo 15 R7 4800H RX 5500M 32GB RAM 512GB M.2 laptop. For extra price trend information on this desktop 1440p monitor, it reached its lowest tracked price on 9th Mar 2021, where it would cost $229.99.
A well priced 4K gaming monitor with 144Hz refresh rate is the Asus Predator XB273K 27 inch 4K GSYNC IPS 1ms 144Hz. It has a price today of $617.99 and should be a nice accompaniment to the MSI Bravo 15 R7 4800H RX 5500M 32GB RAM 512GB M.2 laptop. This 4K monitor, during these past couple of weeks, has increased its price by $582. It’s still a solid purchase to accompany this laptop but it means you may find it for even cheaper at the moment, if you look around. To give a bit more info about this monitor we saw it cost its lowest of $549.99, which we recorded on 13th Nov 2020.
[Note - check that monitor display connectors are compatible between a monitor and a laptop before purchase]
However, you could be after watching 4K streaming content on your laptop, while on the move. Then perhaps the 17inch laptop screen and 4K resolution is going to net a more enjoyable experience than a 1080p alternative.
Hold that 4K gaming laptop cash for perhaps a more powerful GPU or fancy mouse or headset. That's our usual advice. Otherwise it might be a bit disheartening to pay for a 4K gaming laptop, and then be forced to turn the resolution down on modern games to get them to run smoothly.
A mouse that is well priced at the moment and could accompany the MSI Bravo 15 R7 4800H RX 5500M 32GB RAM 512GB M.2 laptop is the Kayinuo M738 Gaming Mouse 3200DPI wired 6 Buttons. Of the mice we price track, it is one of the best valued mice today and currently priced at $12.99. We have seen this mouse lower its price during these past couple of weeks by $23, which is part of the reason we are considering it as a good option for this laptop. Looking over our tracked prices for this mouse, it was at its lowest price on 15th Aug 2020, which had it priced at $11.99.
