Gaming laptops are often expensive when compared to similar specced desktops. So today’s Dell Alienware M17 R1 i7-9750H RTX 2060 Mobile 32GB RAM 256GB M.2 laptop review will be focusing on helping us demystify it’s performance capability in relation to its price. We will take a look at some of the latest demanding games to see the types of FPS returns we could expect to see for this mobile gaming price point.
Is the Dell Alienware M17 R1 i7-9750H RTX 2060 Mobile 32GB RAM 256GB M.2 good as a gaming laptop? Good
Processor - This Core i7-9750H 6-Core 2.6GHz processor in the laptop is an excellent gaming CPU choice for 2021 gaming. This CPU comes with 6 cores, which is excellent providing it extra resource to chew through game processing when required.
Graphics Card - This laptop comes with a good choice of graphics card capable of running lots of 2021 AAA games. The 6GB VRAM found in this laptop’s GPU is certainly a good quantity for modern games.
System Memory - The system memory (32GB) we find in this gaming laptop can meet modern AAA game requirements. This amount of RAM is an excellent 2021 gaming laptop choice, that will help meet game requirements now and into the future.
Screen Size - This laptop panel is an excellent 2021 size at 17.3". This will certainly help gamers see in game details and text. You can game on smaller physical screens, but once you get to this sort of screen size its a nicer experience, while still providing mobile gaming.
Refresh Rate - Look for higher refresh rate hertz for a gaming laptop. Ideally around 120Hz or more refresh rate on a gaming laptop screen. The laptop can only deliver FPS(frames per second) up to the listed refresh rate. So if you have hardware in your laptop that can turn out awesome frame rates on all the latest AAA titles, but a 60hz refresh rate, your laptop will be stuck at a maximum of 60FPS in all games. As far as refresh rates go, this laptop can be picked up with a 60Hz screen. When looking into modern gaming laptops this would be ok, but you would consider higher panel rates if you want to enjoy top frames per second..
While it can be tricky to work out the best price to performance hardware for a gaming laptop, we will be looking at how well this mobile graphics card can run demanding games that are available today or coming out over the coming months. We will consider how well it can perform while gaming at Ultra graphics setting on a 1080p resolution, which is the native resolution for this laptop. We will also look at a few of the more popular games like, Grand Theft Auto VI or Battlefield 6. The GeForce RTX 2060 Mobile in this machine is currently capable of running 491 games at minimum system requirements of the 500 most demanding games available today. Where as it is capable of running 322 games of the top 500 most demanding recommended system requirements.
We really want to see how the Dell Alienware M17 R1 i7-9750H RTX 2060 Mobile 32GB RAM 256GB M.2 will compare across all permutations of the Alienware M17 R1 model range. If you are looking for a strong CPU focused laptop then let's compare this Alienware M17 R1 laptop with the top CPU performance focused laptop available today and see how it compares. A suitable comparison laptop that is CPU focused is the ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 17 G733 (2021) R9 5900HX RTX 3080 8GB Max-Q 64GB RAM 2.0TB M.2 1080p 165Hz. This represents one of the laptops for the current cheapest price with the most powerful CPUs in it today. It has the Ryzen 9 5900HX 8-Core 3.3GHz processor tucked inside it which can deliver 53% better performance when compared to our CPU, Core i7-9750H 6-Core 2.6GHz which is found in this review laptop.
Our laptop processor, the Core i7-9750H 6-Core 2.6GHz, can currently meet the recommended system requirements of 443 games when compared against the top 500 most demanding games right now. This number changes to 499 for the top 500 most demanding minimum system requirements.
Recommended processor requirements for modern games increase all the time, so we thought we would compare the performance of our laptop CPU to some popular games of today. First off there is Battlefield 6 and our laptop CPU delivers 12% better performance compared to that game’s requirement. Next we have Resident Evil 8 in which we see our laptop processor has 9% worse performance compared to the game's CPU specs. And then there is 3% better performance when we put our laptop cpu against Grand Theft Auto VI recommended specs.
Now lets see how well our review laptop holds up compared against graphical performance with the top performing GPU laptop available today. A good laptop to compare against, that is GPU focused, would be the Dell Alienware M17 R4 (2021) i9-10980HK RTX 3080 16GB Mobile 32GB RAM 512GB M.2 1080p 144Hz. This showcases one of the laptops for the current cheapest price, while still housing one of the most powerful laptop GPUs. It comes with a GeForce RTX 3080 16GB Mobile graphics card slotted inside it, which can deliver 65% better performance when compared to our GPU, GeForce RTX 2060 Mobile from our review laptop.
Interestingly we can see 322 games recommended system requirements are lower in performance than our laptop’s GPU performance capability. This is when we look at the top 500 most demanding games around today. For minimum system requirements in this same area the number is 491 games are worse than our GPU performance, again looking at the top 500 most demanding minimum system requirements.
A game’s listed recommended GPU requirements are a good way to compare the performance of our laptop graphics card. Lets see today's popular titles up against our laptop graphics. First off let's look at Battlefield 6 which shows our laptop video card has 12% worse performance than it. How about Resident Evil 8, where we see our GPU is 12% worse. Then there is 21% worse performance when compared against today’s most popular title, Grand Theft Auto VI.
If you are looking for future proof laptops it doesnt take long before people are exploring the 4K panel laptops, but are they really the right choice or should you be focusing on a top end laptop that has the hardware to deliver 1080p gaming. The Dell Alienware M17 R1 i7-9750H RTX 2060 Mobile 32GB RAM 256GB M.2’s 17.3" physical panel produces a native 1920 pixels wide by 1080 pixels tall. With 60Hz being the usual screen refresh rate on 4K laptop panels this would cap a game to run at no more than 60 frames per second, even if the 4K laptop hardware could deliver more. And then most AAA games require more powerful hardware than a laptop houses to play stable 4K Ultra graphics setting games, even at a passable but, some would consider, a bit low, 60FPS. A higher refresh rate is better and this Dell Alienware M17 R1 i7-9750H RTX 2060 Mobile 32GB RAM 256GB M.2 variant is available with 60Hz versions.
So a quick lowering of a AAA game’s screen resolution, from a native 4K laptop panel down to either 1080p or perhaps 1440p would increase the frame rate. And thus improve the stability of your gameplay. But a laptop display panel has a fixed number of pixels. Moving away from that exact number of pixels in a game lowers the definition quality of the graphics in the game. Making the experience sub par and if you do this often, then this seriously puts into question your choice for a 4K gaming laptop. If your 1080p laptop has the hardware to run today’s AAA games comfortably at 4K, then plug your laptop into your desktop 4K monitor, when you are at home for some serious gaming sessions. As that desktop monitor probably isn't 60Hz restricted and is physically larger than the relatively small 17inch laptop screen size. We do just that here, with a 27inch 144Hz Nvidia GSync 1440p desktop monitor and an Alienware 51M laptop sporting a desktop RTX 2080.
However, you could be after watching 4K streaming content on your laptop, while on the move. Then perhaps the 17inch laptop screen and 4K resolution is going to net a more enjoyable experience than a 1080p alternative.
At the moment our advice would be, stick to the 1080p laptop panels for now. Your laptop remains portable and 4K laptop’s just aren't quite there yet. The 4K needs to be a no brainer but at the moment you will still have to lower resolution in game to get playable but sub par visuals that still can't raise above 60FPS.
Incidentally our research shows the ASUS ProArt Display PA278QV 27 inch 1440p 75Hz 5ms IPS as our best priced 1440p monitor today. This monitor has a 75Hz refresh rate and a price tag at the moment of $299.00. We like to review tracked prices for our suggested hardware and this 1440p monitor is no different. We spotted its lowest price, recorded on 9th Mar 2021, where it cost $229.99.
A nice performing 4K desktop monitor, should you want one to accompany this laptop, is the Asus Predator XB273K 27 inch 4K GSYNC IPS 1ms 144Hz. Today it is priced at $629.99 and has a 144Hz refresh rate. During these recent weeks we have price tracked this 4k monitor and noticed that it has increased its price by $629.99, so keep an eye out for deals, as this great value monitor might still be found for cheaper. Interestingly we spotted this 4k monitor at its lowest recorded price on 13th Nov 2020, where it was priced up as $549.99.
[Note - check that monitor display connectors are compatible between a monitor and a laptop before purchase]
Possibly a suitable purpose for a 4K laptop would be if you were keen to watch 4K streaming services like Netflix. At which point perhaps it's enough of a selling point for you to consider a 4K laptop?
We still feel it's not the time to spend extra cash for the 4K gaming laptop due to the limitations laid out above. It would surely feel somewhat disappointing to boot up your new 4K laptop, only to then realise you have to drop down the resolution on modern titles to get them to run smoothly. And then see that anything you play is somewhat less sharp than you have seen on your older PC and capped at a maximum of 60FPS due to the usual 60Hz 4K screen tech.
